On today's autism family vlog: our plans for the day are thrown off course by the weather - after I had a little rant about it, we got on with the rest of the day and tried to find out why Andy has fallen out with his camera, which led on to some discussion and examples of just general rising tension at the moment, which could be to do with back to school anxiety, boredom or any number of other things.

ABOUT KEVIN CHAPMAN
Hi, I'm Kevin Chapman, a full-time KZbinr, author, podcaster, speaker and occasional teacher from Peterborough, UK. As part of my daily vlog I release new videos every day at 5pm UK time with topics including life as an autism family, conventions and geek culture, technology, education and tutorials and entrepreneurship.
When I left my full-time as a Computer Science teacher in July 2017, my partner, Anna, was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw me because I was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today I'm a full-time content creator who's always at home when my kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. Kevin Chapman I think the whole school resuming soon and him seeing yesterday’s vlog about his TA being removed from being with him being removed might have triggered him (as in he knows the TA is being removed as his assistant which might be triggering this) I would if I were you during the first week of school ask his TA to sit down with him and ask him whats wrong. Also maybe he knows hes got a new teacher which might be triggering it

Kevin Chapman maybe when he went to Huntington before he didn’t like it or he got bored and there wasn’t much to film or look at so he thinks that there won’t be anything to do it’s probably not but just an idea

I spend an entire night worrying about a trip to legoland last Saturday because the day before my son was like this. Agitated and anxious but no particular thing i could pin point. Also had a seizure/migraine a few days before. I ended up not sleeping sick with worry. i woke up and he was up before me all happy and said 'when are we going?' And we had a fantastic day!! I really hope the same happens for you and Andy wakes up in a better mood. Fingers crossed. I wouldn't push him any more about the camera just take it incase he asks.

Is it that Huntingdon is on his mind so he doesn't want to take camera incase you go to Huntingdon and he thinks that's where things brake maybe that's why he's been talking about Anna's mum again aswell

Could Andy have possibly messed with the settings in the camera and changed something? Did it always go straight on to taking a photo? Or was there a start-up screen when you turned it on that he possibly turned off in settings? Or maybe he turned on or off a setting that either took some kind of little symbol away? Or made one appear that wasn't previously there? I can't imagine how bonkers this must be making you! I'm not even in the same country as you and I am racking my brain trying to think what could be making him have a sudden change of heart. Please keep us updated!

He hasn’t dropped the camera has he, it looks pretty robust, but he might think it’s broken because that’s what’s happening? The fact he likes to film McDonalds with it might be why he was looking at that? Possibly the stress of going back to school may just be filtering into “I must keep everything the same, argh remember that time in Huntingdon when my filming device broke, mustn’t use that now just in case”. Just a thought, hope things improve! Also, another shout, maybe Nottingham is a “safe place where things don’t go wrong”, and Huntingdon is, maybe Nottingham is a “safe place” to use his camera, which is obviously important to him.

It probably is because of school. Lots of kids get stressed out when they are due to go back to school. That and boredom with how long they have off for summer and he probably doesn't know how to process these feelings. Hope today went well with the steam trains

I wouldn't worry Kev. He is probably anxious and when you're anxious sometimes you can't be bothered to do the things you usually enjoy, as its just extra effort. It also increases your irritability

I can totally understand and sympathies at the anxiety that Andy is showing, my autistic son is the same at the minute and his is down to going back to school.

Obviously you both are Andy experts and I love the way you are always trying to figure out how you can both assist him. I know my son loves on things, with huge devotion for some time and then moves on. Mostly he always comes back to them in his own time and way. Thus It could be just a phase. I know from experiencing grief with a child with ASD, the extensive time it took, not understanding why he couldn't see his poppa anymore. Other than going back to school, holiday boredom and such it is likely he is still processing his loss. As time passes that processing becomes more, as it becomes more obvious to them it is the longest time since seeing their loved one. I'm not saying the two issues of not wishing to use the camera and his sensitivity of feelings are related. I wonder merely since he voices only so much and is still perhaps still processing everything of the past few months, all the good and the life changing times. I'm truly wishing you all the very best. Many Blessings 💜

Don't worry Kev. My brother has autism and has got massive anxiety about going back to school. The closer school is getting the more stressed and grumpy he is becoming. He's does this every summer holiday but about a week after going back to school and resuming routine he become 'normal' again and back to himself.

If you charge something and it’s at 100% for a while, for example, a phone, it will slowly lose its battery life overtime.

Kev i think andy is in the stages of puberty and he is getting stressed with changes that might be happening in his body. Maybe he is seeing the world in a new light.

My brother (also on the spectrum) had a really hard time with summer breaks and transitions back to school. Andy has gone through a lot of change these last few months..good and bad and that is a lot for anyone his age to deal with and his rutine was thrown off and he is probably just anticipating more change to the rutine of summer he just got settled into. Anna starting work again could be a factor as well. For a brief period my mom went back to work in a temp position and i cared for my brother after school and it really threw him off. He didnt want his playstation (1 showing our age here lol) at all till my mom was done with the temp job. My guess is things will hopefully get better when school is back and he gets settled back into a usual rutine.

Hi kev maybe you could try adding through Andy's eyes to the board under the activities he would typically enjoy to remind him he likes it and it might just help him to get into his groove / routine which may make him enjoy it again . Hope this helps keep up the great work

Yes, kids do get grumpy at this point in the holiday. Speaking as a graduated college kid I remember the first two weeks before moving back were always anxiety filled.

I think Andy doesn't like the filming/camera anymore is due to the meet up. Maybe now he realises its actual people watching the vlogs and doesn't quite like that? Not sure just a theory, love the videos Kev!

I have a thing about the low battery too. As soon as my battery drops below seventy, I feel really stressed out an anxious. With my phone, I’m like it because I feel like, when the battery is low, it’ll suddenly die on me and any contact to my family Will be cut off. Maybe it’s like that with Andy? Like, he’s scared that his camera will run out of battery, so he doesn’t want to use it at all.

maybe he has recently remembered the ipod smashing and starting looking at huntingdon because he knew that was where it had happened he wants to visit because there is a mcdonalds and premier inn but he has the memory of breaking something he loves there so he feels the anxiety connected to that memory. ?

Is there any space on the memory card of the camera? Maybe he can only record for a few seconds/ minutes and then it stops so he may think he needs a new one or that it doesn't work? Hope you guys figure it out I love your videos ! 🤞🏻 x

My brothers autistic and he broke his phone and we got it fixed and he was avoiding it and a month or so later he said its because its new because it didn't have little scratches on the screen. Hope Andy starts feeling better and filming soon 😊

Let me have a guess, he was holding the PS4 charger while playing. Maybe....maybe the charger of the camera also needs to be hold while charging because something broke and he is stressing out a bit because of that.

this is just a thought, and I hope it's​ not correct but... You have mentioned before he has periods of Low Mood/Depression. A sign of depression is not enjoying or wanting to do things that you have previously enjoyed or wanted to do. Maybe the stress of school starting soon along with the teacher and possible TA change has not only triggered his anxiety but also an episode of depression or low mood? I'm not sure, that would be my guess though.

I dont know if this could be a reason as to why Andy doesnt want to film anymore, but did he watch your video where you showed parts of his through Andys eyes video on your channel. I know you said on there about the amount of filming he did on the train and other things about it. Maybe he felt like he doesnt need to film now youve pointed out how much he films certain parts of his day? just an idea :)

You mentioned respite the other day, has he been there or is it coming up? I'm just thinking that maybe something bad happened last time he went, for instance something changed or he fell out with someone there, and the thought of going back is stressing him out? Just a thought, but it's most likely that he's stressed about school. On the other hand this could all just be hormones combined with low level stress equalling this stressful time for Andy. I know that, although I don't have autism and am not a 14 year old boy, I am a 16 year old girl and I get in moods like this all the time where nothing interests me and I just wanna be on my own and do nothing. Andy just has trouble expressing that he's feeling like this which is what's making everything twice as bad for everyone involved. I hope he stops feeling this way soon and can get back to the things he enjoys!

I think maybe this is related to Anna's mum with back to school anxiety on top of that. He has been asking to visit her and going through old things he did with her as well as going back to past things. I think maybe he associates technology going flat with never seeing it again like her and maybe it's causing anxiety

I know I have done this before maybe It is a long shot but maybe an error happened and made a noise and that has put him off the camera due to him being scared of it happening again just leave it for a while and then introduce him to it again if that does not work I don't know what to do sorry in advance
