Hi so...did you know American Psycho was adapted into a musical? It premiered in London in 2013/2014 with Matt Smith (11th Doctor from Doctor Who and The Crown) as Patrick Bateman. It made its way to the states in 2016 on Broadway and was there for a few months unfortunately (not well recieved by critics and by theater goers). As someone who is not a fan of horror movies but a fan of horror/thriller musicals, I think they adapted it well. Is it a masterpiece? No but it's campy and I had a blast watching it four times in New York. Please check out clips and the London cast recording and also check community and college theaters. They MIGHT be producing it for you guys to see it near you.

We once went on a vacation through Switzerland, and they had a place that had pizza's they described as 'huge'. Naturally, no-one wished to be outdone and all ordered the 'huge' size, without seeing it beforehand. We ate pizza-leftovers for three days after. I have zero regrets about that.

When I was a kid and the workbook I was doing asked for the area of a circle, I asked mum how and even though she only knew basic maths from school, she got a piece of paper and worked out a formula just from drawing and logic. She thought, if you had a circular slice of orange and unfurled it along the peel, you would get a row of triangles in a straight line that stretch the length of the peel (circumference). Doing that to a circle would just give you infinite triangular segments. And triangles are halves of rectangles, so the area of a circle would half of a radius-by-circumference rectangle. Which simplifies down to the usual formula, but we didn’t know at the time and got there our own way 😊

Alright, you dared discuss math so now you have caused this mathematician to talk about math. Both radius and diameter have their uses. While yes, technically you can get away only using one by using the fact that 2*radius = diameter, you really want to use both because of how we think about shapes. Radius is useful when you need to reference the center of a circle. A circle is a collection of points that are equidistant from a center point, and the distance from the center is the radius. When we want to write the formula of a circle, the radius is what gets used to express this "equidistantness" in the formula. We also need it for some circle formulas (area of a circle = pi*r^2) and circle related formulas (volume of a 3d sphere = (4/3)pi*r^3). While you could write the area of a circle as area=pi*(d/2)^2 = (pi/4)*d^2, it's easier to just use the radius formula. Diameter is useful for more everyday measurements, like Mal brought up with the pizza and box application. Sometimes you want to think of how far across a circle is, so you need diameter. Similarly, you usually think of an ellipse (an oval) as "how far across it is long and how far across it is short" almost like you would a rectangle. You don't think of it as semi-major axis (long "radius") and semi-minor axis (short "radius"). Also, diameter simplifies some formulas, such as circumference (C = pi*d). Basically both are useful in different situations. Radius more often comes up in situations where the center is important, diameter comes up more often when "how far across" is important without much reference to a center.
