For real. He's the classic villain who has a personal connection to the hero, was transformed by a lab accident, and is now forced to be evil against his will. Sadly, I think PBS Kids thought this angle would be too intense for kids so they downplayed the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde dynamic in all of his follow up appearances.
