Well not entirely, but yes. I mean outside of the movies. Many Disney Television Animation shows such as Amphibia, The Owl House, and even The Ghost and Molly McGee; have held onto the heroes and villains trope. Because they gave us some truly evil villains. And while WDAS has unfortunately been playing safe out of the fear from parents complain about scared kids, they are making bold moves with other studios. I mean Infinity Ultron from Marvel’s What If is DEFINITELY one of Marvel and Disney’s darkest and boldest moves in their recent track record. And while Star Wars has of course been a roller coaster of ups and downs with the ever-infamous Fandom Menace, they still make some bold and dark moves themselves. So while Walt Disney Animation Studios is thankfully bringing back evil villains with Moana 2 coming soon, they really need to start taking risks again.
@dragonsman47333 ай бұрын
Part of that is due to their politics. They are scared to make female characters proper villains that aren't redeemed, or risk backlash from activists, thus you have things like Encanto, turning red, inside out two, Obiwan, etc. the same with the remakes with female villains being done to look like they are justified, like Maleficent, etc. its part of the reason why Andor received such a positive reaction compared to activists, because it had female villains who stayed villains. And that was only due to Kathleen Kennedy being kept away from it. The whole situation is rather sexist in itself, as they keep the male villains the same, like in wish where there was supposed to be an evil couple, the queen got turned into a victim from the 'evil narcissistic king'
@Sorcerer-SMC3 ай бұрын
@@dragonsman4733 That is a good explanation, but TBF Encanto and Inside Out 2 weren’t bad movies at all, if anything they were some of the few good things to come out of Disney in the 2020s. And while I do have mixed feelings about Turning Red, I do feel like that film is overhated by the public. I think the last two times Disney made a female a villain unredeeemable aside from Andor were Dawn Bellwether in Zootopia and The Screenslaver in Incredibles 2, both of which were handled poorly admittedly, but unlike Incredibles 2, I still enjoyed Zootopia for what it was. And finally, for Wish, while I do feel like the “evil power couple” concept should have stayed, at the same time Magnifico was still pretty evil. He prepulated his kingdom solely on wishes, the idea, and concept of wishes, and drew in those desperate on wishes like sheep. Magnifico may be a flawed villain and could have been written better, but he’s still pretty twisted and evil. He’s, for lack of a better term, a man who lost his way in his pursuit. The pathway to Hell is paved with good intentions. He controls wishes so that nothing is out of control like when he was younger, and he’s a cult leader with only some sympathetic perspective that got thrown out of the window halfway through the movie. He’s not “the true hero” or “a victim” as many claim, he’s still a villain. A control freak of a king who finally showed his true colors.

Nowadays, Disney reminds me of a satirical story from my childhood, where a storyteller goes to babysit a little boy and tries telling him a fairytale, but the boy keeps saying that there shouldn’t be any evil in a story. So, the storyteller goes home and writes a fairy tale with no conflict whatsoever. However, when he presents it to the child, his reaction is “What a boring fairytale”. The moral is that conflict in a story gives it the needed salt and pepper to make it interesting enough for the readers to keep on reading it. Same goes for movies. And most any art form.

All of the issues with modern Disney are summarized in killer verse with amazing vocals!! Absolutely splendid. One of my favorite parts was when they said "You teach them evil's awful, and you teach them to prevail." That is the whole point of writing evil characters: to teach about good. It's the same problem with the new Avatar remake removing Sokka's sexism because it was bad. That's the point; he learned his worldview was flawed and was humble enough to reform his ways. A character's flaws and the triumph over those flaws or the good characters triumphing over the evil characters are the whole point. Good cannot be taught without showing evil.
@Muffinschaos2 ай бұрын
Yeah the whole point of avatar’s sexism plot is to teach little boys not to be sexist and to teach little girls that they should fight for themselves, to be brave against what others say. It’s proven to be wrong so kids won’t be sexist. The whole point of the remake was to not be sexist, but the original’s point is to make sure people actively don’t fall into it. I can say the same for the ableism Toph faces, parents watching would realise how their actions could affect their child so they believe in and support their disabled children now. That’s the kind of thing this show teaches by showing the bad. Disney should be doing the exact same thing avatar did, make bad people so you can show the children who *not* to be. It works perfectly in Mulan, I think wish could’ve been perfect if it brought back those themes, teaching children what they need to know. But I think wish would’ve been really good if it showed that not everything is black and white as a lesson to teach as well. Yes there’s a classic villain, but he has good intentions, which make the hero realise her own faults within herself without admitting ever that the villain is right or ‘redeemed’ or ‘misunderstood’ because he had one good point, that does not make him good. The hero has many flaws, that does not make her bad. Okay maybe I need to go rewrite wish. 😂
@XarisCoffeen2 ай бұрын
@@Muffinschaos Great thoughts. Having gray villains can help expose that no one is perfect, not even the heroes. And clearly evil, but complex and compelling villains that the heroes defeat promotes good and exposes the types of evil children will encounter so they are prepared. And also I totally agree that wish needs to be rewritten. I want the Disney fandom to raise funds to make an entirely new and better of Wish, because the community responded with some seriously creative ideas of what Wish should have been. 😇
@Muffinschaos2 ай бұрын
@@XarisCoffeen I have some ideas which I’d like to mention here if we’d ever make some kind of movie about this: First of all, shades of grey. Let’s see how we can give Asha a flaw in herself, and Magnífico something good. Magnifico is technically right that not every wish can be granted. Let’s say that a few years into ruling his kingdom, he gave the wrong wish to someone. They wreaked havoc until he took their wish away. He has a good intention now, wanting to make sure no wish does that again by giving them very slowly. This is both flawed and righteous logic, which makes a conflicted movie. He may not go about things the right way, but he is technically right. Asha’s character. I’ve seen suggestions that she could’ve been Magnifico’s daughter. I love this personally. It gives her conflict and it gives her a reason to trust her father at first, before suspicion sneaks in. Asha sees the wishes and wonders why she can’t get hers. After all, her father knows she has a good wish. Magnífico on principle is still not going to do it right now, which gives Asha anger among other things her father is doing, as she notices how poor people in the streets are, and Magnífico just ignores it like it’s nothing. She is naive to the kingdom because Magnífico never told her anything about it, and she has been too laidback about it. Now she has a fire in her which has sparked, and she runs away to see the kingdom for herself. She can’t find money at all, so she steals (Aladdin style) she eventually is found by the man who would’ve been her grandfather in the og story, who takes her in and who tells her about his wish using art so it isn’t fully spoken (a way to add the 2D animation back). Now she has a resolve to give back wishes to the right people. Now for the star. Starboy has been given hope he’s lost by seeing the world by Asha, and he forces himself out of the sky, but he ends up becoming a cracked star. Asha finds him unconscious on the floor and takes him back, saving him. Now they have a time limit, they need to get back Asha’s wish before Starboy dies. This is what I have myself, I think it needs some work but I love it, I’m open to your suggestions! (:

Seriously, it teaches really good lessons. Gothel helps children in abusive situations break free, Facilier teaches children to be careful what they wish for, Frollo teaches them to stand up for the rights of others who are abused, Cruella teaches them the evils of greed, that it will kill and take innocent lives if not reigned in. Gaston that a good looking person isn’t always the best person. Scar teaches not to always believe adults, even if they are your family. Teaches you to question someone’s morals. Ursula teaches that you should be careful who you trust. They show you these evils in the world, animal cruelty, prejudice, the horrors that can come with religion, greed, lies and deceit, and they teach you to fight back against them. Let’s look at some other villains from Disney’s catalog, some more recent yet still good villains. Te ka. Te ka is not technically a villain, but it teaches us that we shouldn’t mess with nature or it will be our destruction, as we see with te ka and te Fiti. Abuela, I’d say she counts as a villain because of what she did to Mirabelle I mean geez. But anyway, it teaches us that abuse, even from those we love for who we are isn’t right. It could also be a lesson to not judge others who don’t have these ‘gifts’ like Mirabelle, who in this family may be akin to a disabled child in the message. Belos who teaches us not to believe everything this world tells us, and to find out for ourselves, to decide what we believe. (Also normalising gay people which is great) and there’s even more. Jafar, Maleficent, they’re all teaching something. And magnífico could’ve been one of those villains.

Worth pointing it that Disney's recent shift to quantity over quality and fall to mediocrity mostly happened during Bob Chapek's tenure. Remember that movies take years to make.
@PixelPlayhouse3 ай бұрын
Oh absolutely! Which is why they asked bob to “save us” and the points they made are more about where the company is right now. I know he’s controversial, but I’m a fan of Iger. I’ve read his book, which was very influential in my life, and even did his masterclass. My morning routine I even based on his! I do believe he will figure it out, he’s said in interviews one of his top priorities is getting creative right
@darkserpentcat33093 ай бұрын
Yes, but with that in mind a lot of the flops from Chapek’s tenure were started in Iger’s first tenure as CEO as well because, as you said, movies take years and Chapek wasn’t CEO for very long. That’s not even going into other topics as well.

@@PixelPlayhouse I liked his book too and I think he is the best CEO Disney had since Walt. For a rich executive, he is quite respectable. I do wish he were less obsessed with IP (and live-action remakes thereof) and I want some fresh blood soon, but he seems to be doing his best to right the ship.

It's just amazing! But now all my brain wants is a full-fledged "A Disney Carol", lol. We have these villains as "Marley's ghost", now we need other characters playing roles of Three Ghosts (personally, I see Hades as The Ghost of the -Christmas- Disney Future. For me, it's just funny to imagine him doing a sarcastic jazzy musical number in which he just ridicule every bad decision of the studio, standing next to a symbolic tombstone.). (For some guys in the comments: Do you know that making music is not so easy? It's quite problematic to cram in a large number of characters and give a word to each of them without making the song too long. So stop whining that [insert name of missing villain] is not here. Be happy with what you have been given, because in this case, given is already gold.)

@halitov38362 ай бұрын
@Anne_Drawings personally, I thought that the Ghost of the Past could be Snow White (well, or the Evil Queen, if we limit ourselves to villains). After all, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the studio's first big, really big risk. I think she could remind us that Disney was once not afraid to experiment and create new things; that's why we loved Disney. As for the Ghost of the Present, I thought that Magnifico could take this role. I mean, who better to portray modern Disney, which is increasingly becoming a parody of itself, than a villain, which at best can only be called a parody of a villain?

Not seeming like dried out storylines, or giving us villains that really aren’t like they were before. Maleficent, Cruella Deville, Ursula, those are golden villains. I wonder what the villains would have to say about some of the other poor unfortunate truths that Disney seems to have these days. Wish was probably the most disappointing, with the sliver of hope for a classic, original antagonist. But nope. Everything about that movie sucks. Dumb decisions after another, the magic most of us felt growing up was dwindling and fading. Most of the time we get a masterpiece like Epic Mickey or Ducktales, but put in a boring song, an easy plotline and meager storytelling, that draws the line!

Reminds me of Twisted. You know, the StarKid song that Disney villains sing on "Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier". And in a really good way. Iger's Scrooge, and the villains being Ghosts of Disney Past. Hope they listen to the song. I LOVE THIS.
@ThenewTchannelАй бұрын
This feels like the start of Bob Iger's very own Christmas Carol. So, in the spirit of this, here's how such a thing would play out a bit more properly: Walt Disney himself would rise to warn Iger that if he doesn't change his ways, the company will be doomed and he along with it. Then comes Snow White to play Christmas Past, showing Iger what Disney used to be and why it worked before. Christmas Present, on the other hand, would be Magnifico, arguably the character that suffered the most from Disney's current MO. Perhaps he could show Iger what the animation industry is doing outside of Disney, for better or worse, and how Disney's actions have influenced the new generation. And then the shadow of Christmas Yet to Come. The Horned King from The Black Cauldron, the movie that was so poorly received it nearly tanked Disney's entire animation studio. A fitting apparition, seeing as the future he shows Iger is one where Disney, in its entirety, has gone bankrupt. Too many movies with zero passion and creative spirit has finally destroyed them, and the studio has died. People turned their attention elsewhere, to more innovative and less greedy studios and creators. And Bob Iger himself? No one even remembers him. He's faded into obscurity in this future, nothing more than just a bad dream to everyone else

@@marielsea2292 Yes. But I'm afraid it's useless to be pessimistic about it. Disney's reputation for potential creativity bounced back last decade. It even did so during the Disney Renaissance from 1989 to 1999 after the success of "The Little Mermaid", which was after the Dark Age of Disney in the earlier 80s. Therefore, greed or no greed, another redeeming moment might happen again, too. Love this! Love the villains’ awareness and pride in their purpose and them banding together to remind the CEO of what Disney is supposed to be! Disney has been falling flat with their cookie cutter main characters, same personality different name. And their lack of a true villain. Disney villains used to be actually unnerving, diabolical enough to teach us what evil was and what it takes to overcome it without being so horrific that kids shouldn’t watch the movies. They sometimes even provided some humor! They were teachers as much as the heroes were! Disney has indeed forgotten the full scope of their audience. Too often I have I found myself lamenting the increasing decline in the quality of their movies and comparing to the ones I watched as I grew up. And don’t get me started on the number of remakes! Thanks for doing this song with the villains, only they could have gotten the point across! And I love how this sounds like a true Disney villain song!

"Hope's not a given, it's a fight / It's hard to keep the light." This line goes by so quickly in the song, but I think it's really deep and fascinating. Due to my own beliefs, I think that hope in the FUTURE is a given, but hope in our current, messed up world is certainly hard to find. But that makes it all the more special when you do find it. Although it makes sense for someone like Scar to think that hope is never a given.
