I'm deaf and rely heavily on my body clock to wake up. In the last month, for some reason that I don't understand, I started waking up every day between 4:15am and 4:45am without fail. At first I hated it and stayed in bed trying to go back to sleep. That completely tired me out, so I started just going with it and getting up. The amount of things I get done and how good I feel have completely turned things around for me. I suffer from depression, and lately I have felt so much better! I still feel depressed from time to time, but nowhere near as much as I did. Life has just gotten better for me and I'm going to keep doing it.

My husband recently became deaf on one side (and he sleeps on the other side) so we are working out how to manage this. So far I just wake up to the alarm then have to wake him. I heard about a mat you put under your sheet and it warms or cools at different times and that wakes you, have you tried it?

@@janesmith3267 A lot of activity bands have alarm clocks on them that will vibrate on your wrist to wake you up. I'm not deaf, but I like to sleep with ear plugs and don't necessarily wake up to a conventional alarm clock, but that vibrating band on my wrist does wake me up.

@@janesmith3267 You probably already have an answer 6mo later, but my husband is a heavy sleeper and he uses a light alarm. You mount it on the wall by where you sleep and face it towards your face. Yep. People say you can “adjust” to a new sleep schedule, but I don’t think we do. You’re not naturally getting tired at 9 and naturally waking up at 4, you’re forcing yourself to. I think we all have a hardwired circadian rhythm that we really can’t change drastically.

People wake up super early for the same reason people stay awake super late. The nightime is the most peaceful, and its *amazing* People choose which method to take depending on when they have the most energy. For me it's at night. Even with a consistent sleep schedule, it takes me a solid hour after waking up just to feel human again.

It is crazy the difference between getting up early for work or for yourself. I've always been a morning person. Not 4:30 early, but I've pretty consistently woken up at 6am my whole life even when I was in high school. Recently I got a new job that requires me to be at work by 7am. I thought "perfect! I already get up at 6, I'll just get up a little earlier" but It's been so tough. I used to enjoy my mornings. Coffee, podcasts, taking my dog on a walk; just me time before my girlfriend or anyone else wakes up. Now that I have to get up and immediately rush out the door, I'm beginning to hate mornings and sleeping in on the weekends! Kinda sad.

Yeah, it's more that people need to watch caffeine consumption, exercise, and keep and eye on their diet. A ton of factors go into sleeping well and people don't realize it. Side note, caffeine stays active in your system for up to 8 hours. So if someone is drinking coffee/soda/green or black tea all day, they probably shouldn't be wondering why they're not sleeping. Alcohol also affects sleep. 🙂

But when he was a baby... Wake up in every 2 hours... I didn't sleep more than 3 hours in one role for 2 years. Destroyed me.

THANK YOU. I hate going to bed at 8 pm, I like being up all night and then waking up around 1 or 2, take a couple hours to wake up (which I do regardless of when I go to bed and wake up) and check my internets and get dressed, then do things in the late afternoon/early evening (too bad it's rush hour then and I have to sometimes push things back)

I'm there same. I've been pretty nocturnal since I was w kid, I've always been garbage at mornings. Having a kid has been hard in the mornings. The flip side is that I have a weird level of patience when it comes to night time wakings and such, whereas my husband just cannot deal with the fussy nights but he's pretty good with the mornings.

I wake up at 4:45 am because my shift starts ar 7. To catch the bus, gotta be at the station at 6. And I gotta walk a half hour to the station. So I leave the house at the latest 5:30. But I actually leave at 5:20 just in case I dislocate my knee on the way and need limp time. So 4:45 gives me 35 minutes to slowly wake myself up and get dressed.

I’m watching this around 3 AM as I lay in bed after getting done driving for Uber/Lyft around 2:30 AM, sooo-ho-hooo yeah, getting up at 4:30 AM is a no from me 😉😝 lol BUT! Since shifting most of my work hours til late at night, I have DEFINITELY noticed an overall improvement in my sleep life relative to the fact that I’m generally waking up on MY terms! No exaggeration, I would say that’s top three improvements ever in my adult life. Most pertinent ripple effect? My depression cycles have leveled off to the mildest in over a decade! There are other contributing factors in this, of course, but usually not waking up to an alarm is probably at the top of THAT list! Things to consider 🤷🏼‍♂️😉☺️

I love watching the street lights come on. The little coffee cafe lights go on. The smell of their coffee!😍 Early mornings are beautiful!! Waking up with nature!❤️ I wake up up at 4:30. I'm driving through town at 6:15. The bakery is open and the donuts are hot! Love my little hometown! It's kind of like chasing firefly's at dark when you're little! It's magical!❤️

I dunno if I told you this before, but when I was a truck driver I liked to go to bed at 5 pm and then get up at 1 am, and that way I could avoid the worst of the rush hour traffic. Since I've been not a truck driver, I've changed that schedule, of course, but I did have a job for a while where I had to get to work at 5:45, so I usually got up at 3 for that. I was not so much a fan of that, because it's a lot different sleeping at home and going to work in the morning, as opposed to sleeping in the truck where the morning commute is about 1.5 metres from the bed to the driver's seat.

Great video! I've been getting up early for the last 4 years and I think the most important thing that you didn't touch on is Consistency. The body gets into a rhythm (of the Circadian variety) and will automatically try to wake up at a certain time, Be awake, etc. If your Circadian Rhythm is telling your body to wake up, but you ignore it and go back to sleep your body gets confused and that is why often a sleep-in can make you drowsy for the whole day following. "Wait, i'm meant to be sleeping now? I thought it was morning... Ok then, time to prepare for 8 hours of sleep." My first few weeks were rough but once the Circadian Rhythm adjusted to my schedule it did the job of waking me up! Consistency is important because it lets your body cooperate with your plans, getting the most out of sleep and your mornings, rather than conflicting.

Very good point but also one of the reasons your body wakes up "naturally" at that time is to avoid the sharp boost in blood pressure/adrenaline when your alarm goes off. Or to pee.

Totally agree with the assessment that a steady, intentional sleep schedule makes the difference. Last year I got a steady schedule going as part of my "be less depressed" regimen, and it did wonders! Of course, the schedule was wake up at 10am, go to bed at 2am xD But it was a steady 8 hours, and since I work at home, worked really well for me!

@Dracontiar
@Dracontiar 5 жыл бұрын
@@SaturatedCat Oh, to be clear, I'm the same way. If I could just pick a time at random, I'd go to bed at the same time as my husband. But that's not gonna happen. xD Having a pretty firm routine helps. I usually have to plan on being in bed at least 45 minutes before getting sleepy. Sometimes 2 hours. And I've kinda Pavlov'd myself into sleepiness with this one crossword app. And then of course, regular wake-up and eating times helps, too. There are definitely still nights I can't sleep until 4am or more. Nothing to do but wait for sheer exhaustion to do its work. But it's more the exception than the rule now, and I'm more functional for it.

I enjoy feeling like I have the whole day to do whatever I want, but at the same time I’ve always been a night owl. I’d like to know how long these “omg I wake up early” KZbinrs REALLY stick with it. More waking hours does NOT equate to more productivity. I am up between 3:30am and 4:30am every morning - and no kids at home. I've always enjoyed mornings but it got ridiculous when I was writing my first book. I had four children, a small business, and was their coach & hiking partner in the afternoons. That meant, I couldn't really steal time from the afternoon to write. So I'd get up at 4am - coffee already brewing - write from 4:15am to 6:15am and be available for the family as the morning kicked off. And it's stayed that way ever since. I don't set an alarm, I work for myself - from home - but I LOVE getting up at 4:10am (ideally). But mostly whenever. Oh... I go to bed between 7:45pm and 8:30pm. Today I got up at 4:35am and found your newsletter. Morning, coffee, and the Tuesbetter Newsletter. Does life get any better?

Love your videos. A note on sleep: Scientists have determined that our sleep cycles are approximately 90 minutes. I started sleeping in cycles that can be divided evenly by 90 minutes (an hour and a half), and have found that when I follow this pattern I wake up feeling refreshed. Try this in conjunction with waking up at 4:30. Give yourself about a 15 minute buffer to fall asleep. So, for 6 hours of sleep you should be heading to bed around 10:15 pm, etc. Try it, it'll make a difference.

A big wrinkle here is differences in circadian rhythm, for some of us this won't work even if we wanted. No matter how often I got up early (former military parents & school starting early), I hated it as a kid. Even trying to work around my work schedule, I am at my worst during the AM hours. When I can sleep on my terms (sleep from about 2-3AM til 10-11AM), I feel the absolute best rested & like I can get more done efficiently. I feel like my diet has gone further in mitigating working awful morning and midday hours than anything else.

That's me as well, and I'm 31. I've been working an 8am-5pm job for over 5 years, and figured it would set me straight to "normal," but it still feels naturally WRONG. I've been diagnosed with delayed sleep disorder or something - delayed something or other disorder - and I wish I could do my job on my own schedule. It's good money. But I think it's killing me in the sense that it's like asking a "normal" person to work a graveyard shift 5 days a week for 5+ years. Normal folks don't function their best during that time. That's when I feel most alive, though.
