So I used to train in locating Emergency Location Transmitters,(ELTs) some people call them something different. But its a beacon emitted on a certain frequency, I cant remember which, its used for downed aircraft. If an airplane crashes, then it sets off a beacon, and any and all ATC towers will be able to hear it. That being said, we had a job to track down aircraft when their ELT was sounding, so that it wasn't bugging the nearby ATC towers, and it is a very time-consuming process to triangulate the position, it is not easy at all. It does make things easier when you actually know the area in which the aircraft is located, but if you dont know that, it can make things difficult. We used this thing called an Elper, we also used a hand-held receiver. But triangulation is not easy. That being said, the chances of someone knocking at your front door, are very slim.

Is it possible to find the distance a transmission is away without having to point to it with a directional receiver? If so, wouldn’t it be possible to find a location using two omnidirectional receivers and geometry? Just use a map and compass to draw circles around each receiver using distance away as the radii. There should be two points of intersection (ie two possible locations). Then compare the times of significant events in a recording of the transmission with the time to find out which receiver got the transmission first, which should point towards one of those points. Now that I think about it, your receivers might have to be pretty far apart for this to work

Many years ago I had a friend who was a dj in Laredo, TX. There was a big storm and he was sent out to man the emergency transmitter. Now the transmitter was out in the middle of nowhere and was just a shack with a giant antenna next to it. As he was getting out of his car he went to get something from the trunk. Putting his key into the trunk lightning hit the antenna which then jumped to his car and found ground through him. Luckily he was thrown clear and regained consciousness lying in the mud. His key was welded to the trunk which was the only reason I believed him.
