This is amazing. I think a lot of people don’t realize how rare this phenomena actually is. You can only reliably witness it in a handful of places, most notably Iceland and Hawaii. Nearly all other surface volcanoes on earth are much more explosive, and hence way too dangerous to view up close like this. The reason for this has to do with the source of the volcanism and the chemical composition of the magma. Volcanism can be roughly divided into three main types: subduction, rift, and hotspot. Subduction volcanism happens when two tectonic plates are being pushed together, causing one of them to slip underneath the other. the sinking plate then melts, becomes buoyant (just like the wax in a lava lamp) and bubbles up through the plate above it. Rift volcanism is when two plates are being dragged away from each other, stretching and thinning out the crust between them until it tears open, and magma starts to “bleed” out. Hotspot volcanism is when a large column of magma rises up from deep beneath the crust, cutting through the crust itself like a hot iron nail through a block of ice, and pushes magma out at the surface. It’s not clear what causes the magma to rise in the first place, but they tend to stay in place while continents move over them, like a sheet of paper being moved around over a stationary candle. In subduction volcanism, the magma comes from a tectonic plate being melted, and tectonic plates contain lots of weird kinds of rock that don’t exist deep within the earth, such as limestone (which is made of petrified marine organisms). Some rocks melt without much of a fuss, but limestone gives off massive amounts of carbon dioxide gas when heated. Different rocks also melt at different temperatures, which means that by the time the magma starts to rise towards the surface, it’s not completely liquid, but more like a thick slurry with lots of crystals that haven’t had time to melt. So what happens when this thick, crunchy magma, with massive amounts of dissolved gas trapped inside it, finally reaches the surface? It pops like a shaken bottle of champagne. The gas explodes out, sending the crunchy rocks flying everywhere and turning the runny magma into foam and mist, which instantly solidify into pumice and ash, respectively. Nasty stuff, very dangerous. Rift and hotspot volcanoes, on the other hand, have very homogenous magma. You can think of it almost like blood: if you get a cut, the blood looks and flows the same no matter where on your body it happens, because the blood flowing through your toes is the same stuff as the blood flowing through your nose. In this view, magma coming from deep below the crust is a bit like the blood of the planet. It contains very little gas and solid crystals, and so is very runny by the time it reaches the surface, causing it to ooze out peacefully with only the occasional spatter, like toothpaste from a tube. Most volcanic regions fall into one of those three categories. For instance, the Hawaiian volcanoes are hotspot types, producing fountains and rivers of lava as seen in the 2018 eruption of Mauna Kea. East African volcanoes are mostly rift types, with two of them (Niyaragongo and Erta Ale) featuring big lava lakes that occasionally rise up and overflow like a clogged drain. Meanwhile, practically all volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire (Krakatau, Mount St. Helens, Pópocatépetl, Fujiyama, etc. etc.) are subduction types. Iceland, though, is quite unique in being a mix of rift and hotspot, evidently caused by a plume of deep magma rising up through the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. That’s why the gorgeous little volcano in this video is so peaceful that you can walk right up, in the middle of an ongoing eruption, and cook hot dogs on its lava flows. Granted, Icelandic volcanoes are also capable of much more explosive eruptions-but this has much more to do with the fact that they’re covered by massive glaciers (which causes water to flash-boil and explode during eruptions) than with their geology. Thanks for the awesome video ❤️

Thank you for the wonderful comment! I learned a lot. I am appreciating this volcano more and more. I just uploaded a new video where I go to the volcano a month later. It has grown a lot despite the peaceful flow of lava. I also filmed it at night :) Hope you enjoy it!

So amazing! They would never let people this close here in the USA... (or they would charge admission) - what an opportunity!
@JonBear3 жыл бұрын
We definitely had some foolish people, and a lot of people who were not dressed well enough (Iceland is cold!) that had to get rescued by the rescue team. Some other people got lost trying to get to the volcano. In the end the Rescue team has made a clear hiking path now with checkpoints to make it safer for everyone. So you're right, instead of restricting people, we just made it safer haha :D Can't stop people from going :D I think we have laws that forbid people to charge admission to nature here, but I bet the people who own the land the volcano appeared on are planning to build a cafe or tourist shop :D

This has to be the most primeval moment closely captured on 4K by thrill seeking youngsters who were so naively willing to risk their lives simply to get a selfie. They were driven by same impulses that took the lives of many people on White Island, New Zealand last year, but those poor souls were asphyxiated before being enshrouded by super heated gas following a major unexpected volcanic eruption. The menacing uncontrollable power of nature has the capacity to turn smiles into agonising screams in seconds. Don’t mess around with nature, stepping on a lava flow could induce surface collapse and instantly incinerate a human foot before you know it.

I really appreciate it! Music is from Adrian Von Ziegler who allows creators to use his music as long as we give credit. I highly recommend his youtube channel! 💗💗

Nice film. It's genuinely amazing that after millions of years, there is still so much heat in the earth.

Breathtaking footage! I don't think I'll ever get to go near an active volcano in this lifetime, so thanks for sharing this.

“Hot Rock Cooking with Magma” a great idea for a cookery show. Would Gordon Ramsey be interested ? (The lava reminds me of mom’s lasagna topping).

I'm pretty sure the volcano would object to that. I mean... look at what it did after a guy dared roast his hot dogs on its lava...

I make lasagna a lot and all I can think of when watching the volcano is cheese

I am definitely the kind of idiot who would bring sausages and marshmallows to an erupting volcano... but I'd at least bring a long stick to roast them on.

Hats off for you photo graphers and media personals. You all risk your life to give first hand information about the volcano to the world. You are creating history to be remembered forever. Please don't take too risk so as to endanger your life. Give importance to your safety also . Arrange for helicopters to be ready to rescue you all in times of crisis. Raju from Tamil Nadu, India. Congrats Heroes! and Heroins!
