While the van is just a shell, get it painted Barum Orange! Also, no point in turning it into (another) track car... go the show route. Classic sign writing with a super clean engine bay, tucked loom etc. Custom interior.. not race inspired but classic luxury. It'll open up different car shows for you to attend and advertise your company!

Suggest you paint the container light grey or silver, so it is cool in the summer, or paint it the same color as the corro roofing that is installed about the door to the building, then it wont stand out too much.

Love the Escort van project guys, it would be great to keep the the build period with some nice original bucket seats maybe a deep springalex steering wheel, some deep lotus steel wheels and some old school Barum Engines style sign writing on the side as it might have looked as a race support van in the 60s 👍

Hi Lee I’ve got a BDA cam carrier which you are welcome to have. It came off my old formula Atlantic spec BDA which I ran in a Darrian T9. It does need a small weld repair. Great engines but for road use be careful with cams.

Nice project BUT put a low tune on the BDA engine or you will be tearing the body shell apart. Those panel vans were only built tor a 1300 motor. And I would be very surprised if the builder stitch welded all the seams and added the necessary gussets to allow it to survive a powerful motor before they laid down the paint. If you’re going to fit a World Cup crossmember, see if you can get softer rubber engine mounts. The standard ones are far too hard. Looks like your van has a standard gearbox tunnel, bare it in mind for a gearbox choice. Definitely best engine choice I’d love one for my rs2k.

Did my escort mk 1 van in Modena green always like that colour when you say BDA do you mean your going to build a 2 litre alloy block BDG the steel block will only go up to just over 1800 cc for rallying it was a game changer when Terry Hoyle developed the alloy block that was fitted to the mk2 RS 1800

Back in the day I had a MK2 Cortina 1600 crossflow running on a Webber twin choke. It went like the wind. Gear box went and being a colum change not easy to repair. I later found out how rare it ws and should have been repaired. By the bye I would call it Kermit green

Just to advise you that containers are like ovens in the summer and fridges in the winter so insulation needs to be considered at some time in the year the ceilings drip continuously with water making card board soggy and steel rust.

Love the van. I had one years ago as a spare work vehicle. Factory builtwith the Ford C3 auto box, 1.3 engine. I had in mind fitting a 2 litre Pinto, and even got a new back axle with more suitable diff ratio. Then I got distracted. I like the idea of the BDA on carbs. Who needs fuel injection? (I used to do mobile Crypton engine tuning in th 80s and 90s). Looking forward to seeing (and hearing) progress. Don't do black for the container. It will show all the dirt. Light grey might be better?

Speaking from experience put an Atlas in the escort, 200+bhp bda will destroy it. I ran L1 and BD3 cams I think, got maybe 230/ 240bhp. Lots of torque very driveable, but also pretty savage, fantastic noise too❤

I'd suggest a colour for the container which will blend in with the Estate. Plus, I'm concerned about indicating it's possibly valuable contents. I'm leaning toward a waste-disposal company, or construction debris, so no one would want the rubbish within.

Couple of things to bear in mind ……you’re bound to have to do some paintwork I’m afraid. The seam on the back of the engine compartment will have to be flattened to give clearance behind the cylinder head now you’ve bought a WC crossmember. Gearbox tunnel will need to be enlarged to get a stronger box in.Coilovers on the standard rear damper setup??? Will probably need some turrets welding in. English axle with more than 200 brake? Baby Atlas will be better. 280 brake from a 2litre BDA will need to be injected and £35,000 in real time figures.It’s got the RS strut top plates fitted but how much more strengthening has been done? Etc Etc……

Just a little point not being clued up on engines had to research BDA so could you explain a little history of an engine when you talk about it it helps with your content. I agree that engine would be really nice in the van not sure about the green? but that's just personal preference. Happy New year to you all may it be a happy and prosperous year. I just wished I had known of you a few years ago as I needed to convert a Citroen twin 602 engine to a 652. The Citroen 2cv engine is an amazing piece of engineering and very under estimated I built a 3 wheeler with one of these engine it was amazing and a head turner. Sadly I had to sell it when I moved to France. It was called a Pembleton and blue.

I had a MK2 55 van, man that was racered up or what, 2 litre Pinto and a Sierra 5 speed box, jacked up at rear with larger wheels back and phat tyres afront, had a LSD diff and the interior was super furry with fake fur just about everywhere. Also it was one of the early MK2's which were MK1's and I was thinking MK1 the front end. I also was considering fitting a RS2000 droop snoot as mechanically it was an RS and insanely quick esp after fitting one of Burton's aggressive cams very fiesty. Even though it was white, the sun had aged it to an off white so went at it with Ford diamond white rattle can job and the bumpers a matte black, wheels were highly polished and the rear tyres I ground down all the various labels to just leave the Goodyear which was picked out in tyre paint and same on front. Had an eight speaker stereo in it and a Sony Xploder stereo running it all oh and a set of Recaro seats up front in black. Very capable machine with superb handling made better by upgrading the bushings to PTFE ones giving it much much less wallow on the double bend turns.

Don't go BDA. Far better with a nice trick 1760cc Crossflow - flat tops, chambered head, etc. Mate that to an MX5 gearbox and you have a set-up that is very road drivable and far more in keeping with a van. 👍

Sounds cool, and it will be good advertising/marketing so possibly a write off tax wise ? Was thinking rather than the current "Barum Engines" Logo and colors, was there an earlier logo, font and colors from the Escorts 70's era that you could employ instead of current orange and black logo. The modern one seems out of scheme for a period car like that... Wasn't it called "Barum Machining" before your initially joining the Company as a younger man ? Perhaps you can reflect that in its paint scheme without changing that nice utilitarian green paint it's currently wearing ? Maybe get in contact with Dominic Chinea re your Escort's getting some period style hand painting or a wrap design in a content swap for some work on his 356 Coupe restoration ? He'll certainly need help on an engine eventually (don't think he has one or trans yet ? ) Maybe some viewers have an aval 356 drivetrain for sale ?
