The guy working at a convenient store who kicked Ezell out was the director of the movie F. Gary Gray. He advised the cast not to wear any red due to neighborhood being a Crip neighborhood. Red played by DJ Pooh wrote this movie along with Ice Cube . DJ Pooh wanted to play Smokey because this movie was based off of his life but the studio wanted an comedian/actor so Chris Rock was considered for the role but declined due to conflicts within his schedule which led to F. Gary Gray fighting for Chris Tucker to get the role. Chris Tucker was unknown & this movie was his breakout role.
