Thanks for making the video :) I've made some notes based on your comments and will make a few tweaks here and there to the quick start guide I ship with the boards. Great to hear your feedback during the unbox and setup of the board, you had me laughing big time during a few sections of the vid, very entertaining! and the fact we got your After Burner playing again, this really was the motivation behind the project, to help those with failed or missing game boards, the Sega Super Scaler games of this era aren't easy to repair, and when the Custom IC's fail (usually Audio or Video related) What can you do...My solution is something you can now consider. Thanks again, smarty.

I am an engineer and this is a cool project. I know it is running as an emulator and not actual original hardware, but if it allows the machine to be saved, that's really cool to me. 9:01 Don't know if anyone's answered you, but GPIO means General Purpose Input Output. On something like a Pi, you can move data in and out on individually addressable pins for, well, anything, it's general purpose after all. I think the latest Raspberry Pi has something like 40 GPIO Pins on it. it's a pin interface

@@LyonsArcade the raspberry pi has a gpio board that has the joysticks and the buttons and there is a SD card image that contains the software to run the pi as an arcade emulator and they have all of the ROMs for over 4,000 games it may be even more by now and I don't have that image but I would bet it has the afterburner game roms and this is a strip down ROM that has just the afterburner game roms and the software to run the interface board but it is very impressive In the builds that I've seen they have dozens of wires plugged into the gpio board and dozens more plugged into the raspberry pi in order to make it all work and this eliminates all of that with factory connectors and a board that fits into the original cage I hope the person who makes these has a business that fabricates other PC boards for other companies because I can't imagine there is enough money in the games that these boards can run To manufacture the board and the interface boards if you are going to an outside company they're going to want an initial fee for the design and a run of a few thousand boards and that's a lot of money to invest and have these sitting in storage waiting for people to find you to buy them It's much more likely this person has a company that does PC fabrication and has access to all these parts with the exception of the raspberry pi and the gpio board Looking at the original board that was a lot of work that the company put into building that machine and it is wild to look at the raspberry pi which is basically a mini computer and see that that little computer and the interface board can replace all of those chips and do it all using software is just wild Imagine what we are going to have 20 years from now if we are still here and the planet hasn't been destroyed The robots that can help disable people that can go and answer the door and that can actually go out and unload the vehicle of groceries and put the groceries away and can even get into the car and go to places to do tasks and have self-driving vehicles that go to the different places and have robots there that load the orders into the vehicle as it drives up and gets scanned is not too far off and definitely 20 years we will have that but it can't come soon enough

@@ocsrc Actually, I would imagine they used a PCB fab company to make the raw boards, plug in the microcontroller, and leave room for the RPi. Still writing the emulator likely took a lot of work. But yeah, if you want a replica of the original, then yeah, you need companies to do this, and yes, there would likely be order minimums. On this application, I think there are maybe 4-6 games or so. Ron toggles between them at the end of the video. I am curious about the strategy used to make the emulator. He could have emulated the original CPU and run the original ROMs, or he could have used native RPi code to do it. The latter would be more efficient but would require more work to make the game work with fidelity to the original.

Pretty awesome job on the board. My only thought would be some 3d printed “caps” for the built in connectors that the expansion board replaces (just so people don’t plug into the wrong ones). The power supply that was in there was the original one, we usually replace them with a brand new one... after finishing the video the next day we swapped the power supply, and when I did I noticed there was a voltage adjustment on the right side of it. There was some feedback interference in the monitor that the new power supply fixed, and we adjusted the new one down to 5.1. We usually leave them a little higher just to make up for loss you get through the connectors, etc. Thank you for watching Curtis!

I'm gonna love this video because this is exactly what I hoped you would do ! I wrote yesterday " I dunno, ya got the case and the screen cool flight stick and all that you could bung an emulator in there and run that " because it is 90% there and I hated the thought of it gathering dust. I wondered if you would do it because there are some 'purists' out there that will hate this idea and maybe tell you so, but what they often don't even know is the modern emulators (Raspberry Pie) run the exact same original ROM's that Saga produced ! put simply it's the EXACT same code as the original game byte for byte and you have the controls and even the CRT so this will operate EXACTLY like the original !! nice one Ron, now I'm gonna watch the rest of the video and I do hope the install goes ok...cheers.

Very nice that it's working, and "better" than ever. There are some that'll be upset over the "purity' of the arcade not being used in lieu of an emulation board, but it's certainly an alternative. Another aside, the Z80 processor is sometimes suspect on some other repair videos I've seen. It seems like all the sounds that weren't playing were all digital audio sounds, so that part of the board might need repair. Also, a bench power supply might go a ways to help you diagnose problems, such that you can hook into where power is supplied and bring it up outside of the cabinet. What's going to happen to the original PCB?

Anyone critical of the engineering, needs to step-up or shut up. It's easy to sit back and snipe at those that, actually, do the work. I think this is an amazing project that will help resurrect a ton of classic games.

I am now wondering as I'm watching this if this isn't the actual raspberry pi that you could load the 2001 game image and have it connected up to the standard joystick and button configuration on a universal board and run all of the games off that raspberry pi What would be truly awesome is if there was an option for just running the afterburner or for entering the 2001 game emulator to play all of the old school 8-bit and 16-bit arcade games

I suspect that the SmartyPI and Raspberry Pi is an emulator (similar to a PC or Mac running MAME) and the interface modifies it to run at 15Khz video, and work with the original I/O buttons, coin inputs, lamps, and other original parts.

Perhaps he should had designed it to use a Raspberry Pi CM4. There are actually a few modern arcade games which use Compute Modules.

GPIO is just "General Purpose I/O." Those are the lines on the controller. I assume the other module on the board is an FPGA board. That is like a blank slate for logic designs, and there is a ROM that contains the netlist that defines your logic. So one would use the developer's suite for whatever FPGA, make your design, "compile" it, and it writes it to the small ROM so it is there in the future. FPGAs and microcontrollers have GPIO lines that are defined in the netlist or emulation software. In this case, I guess the RPi does all the work and the FPGA board it attaches to is what converts and distributes the signals to the board. So I guess that board is a bridge of sorts with custom logic to make the cabinet work with the RPi. Looking up the CPU on the RPi 4B, yes, the memory sizes affect the price. The 3 varieties in terms of memory average about $35/$55/$75 in cost. It uses a quad-core ARM Cortex A72 @1.5-1.8 GHz. There seems to be no 4A, just the 4B. There are the A series and the B series, and the B series has Ethernet on it. I can't imagine you'd need Ethernet for this application. I imagine if a 4A were to exist, it might work for this. However, it doesn't. So apparently you need version 4 due to the CPU used. Otherwise, it would use the ARM Cortex A53. The lowest memory variation is not made anymore. Now, ARM doesn't actually make the ARM CPUs from what I understand. It is just a licensed specification, and 3rd-party manufacturers make their own variations. In this case, Broadcom makes it. I imagine the 4B is needed for your use because of the changes in how interrupts work as opposed to previous versions of the Broadcom SOC that contains the A72 CPU. Plus the 4B has triple the performance of version 3 RPi, and it adds the Neon math extensions. That is impressive, being able to do 16 complex math calculations at the same time. It is neat what can be done with the RPi. I think there is an accelerator for the Amiga which uses it, and it plugs into the 68000 (or whatever) socket and gives 68040 support, with the FPU too, even if such an arrangement cannot ordinarily fit in the socket. So Amiga games that would otherwise be out of the question to run work with the RPi 68040 emulator installed. Oh, things like the Amiga Wolfenstein 3D port work with the stock machine but are painfully slow, yet adding the Raspberry Pi-based emulator makes it run as good as or better than the PC version. While hardware purists would have a problem using an RPi board in a case like this, sometimes, that's what you must do, and it is amazing that such a system board exists for this machine. And believe it or not, the old board can likely be repaired at some point, though you'd need someone to change the custom chip for you. That just takes specialized equipment and skills. Things like a flow oven, a heat gun, and drag soldering techniques are some of what is needed. The special chip is available from China, and I haven't heard of anyone running into counterfeits of those.

I don't know why this was removed, but I appreciated the comment: Mr Guru replied: "No, the other little blue board is an Arduino mini pro. About 2 bucks on ebay." I got to thinking later that this was just a microcontroller.

They make one of these raspberry pi interfaces for pole position 1 and 2 as well. The problem with a raspberry pi is that mame isn't perfect emulation, though I doubt anyone would notice the difference.

I've heard of that one, but that one isn't plug and play unfortunately... you have to change out the configuration of the gas pedal and some things because it can't handle the analog inputs, this one you just plug it up and it works with the original controls, pretty nice!
