Steve Morris put out a video a while back about crank sensors and said there was a real issue with the ones using a 12 point magnet set up I believe. He switched down to a 10 magnet sensor pulley mount and that cures most issues common with rpm sensors in Holleys if I remember correctly. Rubys fix may be as simple as changing out that billet piece and then setting the different count in the software if you are using what he was talking about.

Hey Cleet, if you want to 100% get to the bottom of the sync issue, get your hands on an oscilloscope and get a measurement of the 5V supply and output pins from the crank sensor. Is the sensor gap set correctly, looks pretty wide in the video? If the trigger wheel or crank sensor are moving and opening up the gap that could do it. Either way the oscilloscope data should point you in the right direction.

Try changing out the ECU. I remember Ricer Miata has the same kind of issue where he changed out everything and still had the same problem. I agree. It's either the wiring to the sensor or the ECU itself at this point. I think they aready re-ran the wires. Also, Steve Morris said 12-magnet reluctor wheels are no good on holley. Maybe a 4-magnet one would work better needing less resolution.

I think you are getting a lot of inductive crosstalk, and at some point when you're under power and generating high amounts of current that inductive gain is causing you to get bad signal. So two things first affix a faraday day cage around where the crank sensor is. doesn't have to be anything fancy just some grounded metal which is enclosing that area. Then make sure that the wires you're using are shielded and grounded. I work in it, and sometimes we have problems with signal because of cable runs being too close to other power lines or other lines carrying current causing induction. So for critical data lines we will use shielded and grounded cable. I would at least try that, it's an inexpensive thing to try.

although its a big job, they need to make sure they have a clean power/ground, a dirty power/ground, and all sensors and components are grounded accordingly. Then check if the cam and crank wire are shielded and terminated properly. It seems like it's losing signal only under high rpm/load, so it's losing resolution somewhere. The last step would be to gut the engine harness, or maybe even all wiring, and do a proper concentric twist harness to prevent noise.

True shielded cable has shielding on each pair of wire, a shield around the bundle, and are terminated to patch panels & jacks with a ground. They also have a current "drain" wire which connects to the shielding and which peels off from the connector to be separately grounded. Good shielded wire allows you to run through very noisy electrical environments and get clean signal. I don't know that's what your problem is, but that's where I would start personally. Some kind of grounded metal cage which you fit around the crank sensor, and a high quality shielded cable which is also grounded. If it doesn't work, my apologies that's my best suggestion given I'm not a car guy I'm an IT person but so much of this is computer controlled anyway. I don't think it would hurt to have grounded shielded spark plug wires, and to at least run your other lines through a braided stainless steel sleeve, which is also grounded. You are in true Halo race car territory now so the expense of using high quality wiring harnesses which are shielded and grounded should be trivial in the face of the other expenses.

Not sure about new engine but then again Zack said she's got a cylinder or two not optimal so maybe. Hands down Ruby hooks and rolls straight as good or better than any other car y'all have no matter the track so it's probably about time she got a real intense once over...

Have you tried testing the wires at the connector to the sensor? Like testing the grund and the positive connection? You know its losing the signal, but how about testing if it is caused by a bad/faulty ground connection, you could try to run a wire with a testprobe into the back of the plug/connecter on the sensor and then directly to a known good ground.
@Mwmw663202 жыл бұрын
Something to consider with Rubys crank position sensor might be similar to an “induced voltage” problem. Where depending on the type of wave signal the crank sensor is sending ( inductive vs hall effect ) a distortion of the signal could be being created from a separate source as power ramps up. Isolating the sensor wire from the harness might be the best bet. Side thought Im not sure were exactly Rubys wiring harness enters the firewall, but a bad pin in our bulkhead connection port once cause us to chase our tails cause we never considered it, we had checked the wiring connection at the bulkhead port several times. But it wasnt until we were ready to rip out the harness and start fresh that we pull the port apart and saw the damaged pin.

Heat on the wires/electrical components. Either re-wire with heavier gauge and/or heatshield, or move the pipes.

VERIFY YOUR CRANKSHAFT THRUST!! What you have going on is a tell tale sign of the crankshaft moving under load and interrupting the signal. Might be the problem, might not. Worth checking. I’ve dealt with plenty of engines that had good oil pressure and thrust issues at the same time.
@martindinner36212 жыл бұрын
How would you check that?
@92Jdmsupra2 жыл бұрын
@@martindinner3621 You have to disassemble the engine and use shims on the crankshaft I believe. Never done it, just watched.
@benjaminmerritt7692 жыл бұрын
@@martindinner3621 the quick and dirty way is to set up a dial indicator on the crankshaft and use a pry bar to move it forward and back and see how much it moves. If it’s out of spec, You got problems in the shortblock. This often happens when a converter “balloons” in a high Hp setup. This being a rear trans vette, the situation may be different. Worth double checking though.

Blame it on the heat! It great what you do to help other types of racing events keep on going.
@wwand472 жыл бұрын
I think it's the heat of the exhaust cooking the crank signal. Once it get to hot it falls out try a wrapping the exhaust and the problem should go away. That's the only thing you have not changed that would explain why it works when the engine is cold it works fine then when you start driving and getting heat in the engine it falls out.

It's either a wiring issue or a faulty Holley system. Wiring is always a gremlin chase.

Check crank end play. Too much trans pressure once ruined my thrust bearings and would push the crank forward in boost, disrupting crank signal and making it cut out. Then eventually not start at all once the bearing was wore out enough

Send the computer back to Holley to get tested, could be something internal

It's the 12 magnet exducer on the crank signal. The holly won't run right with it. He needs to switch ruby to the 4 magnet version!

@@codylapoint I think @stevemorrisracing just talked about something like this in a video not to long ago but it was something different between Holly and Fuel tech needed ??

@@doublebulbing Yeah it was the Holly and another brand which I can't recall. If the different reluctor wheels are paired with the wrong ecm it won't read the rpm signal properly.
