That baby heads fire road is just brutal. I always tell people this is the only black diamond fire road you'll ever ride. It goes from fun and games to ahhhhh crap it just got real! Great job to both of you. As someone that has ridden this stuff at a fun pace it's definitley brutal thinking about doing this at a race pace like you guys did with no stopping.

I raced this back in '99 on a hard tail and I recall a guy passing me on a full rigid like I was still on that section! I was racing sport class at the time and finished in the top 20. That guy put me to shame.

WTF was that a desperation send/ fail right at the end of Syd's race. Almost took you both out and then adds a snarky "you got it." Good on Syd for elbowing past and taking the spot back

I just wanted to say a huge thanks to this channel - I just completed my first ever mountain bike XC race about a week ago (Ore 2 Shore 48 mile in Michigan's upper peninsula) and pretty much all of the inspiration to even try a race was due to this channel. You are both incredibly inspiring. It was about a year ago that I started to get into mountain biking, saw my first Syd and Macky video, and now I'm doing rides I would have never thought possible and even holding my own in a race. Thanks to both of you for igniting the fire.

Okay I have a race that I think challenges the title of hardest non-marathon XC race: True Grit Epic in St George, Utah. 50 miles, 5,000 feet of climbing, all connecting southern Utah singletrack. It’s awesome, and in March!

I recently went from the Aggressor/DHF to a pair of the Recons on my trail bike. I dropped 15.5 oz and they ride so much better. I’m not racing so I went with the 60 tpi EXO for durability. I’m very happy with the ride and handling.

There is a pretty challenging race called La Onza and I know you have not done it. It is Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico and it is a 40 kms loop in the Sierra Madre, very beautiful place and the course is pretty intense with crazy downhill. You can do 1, 2 or 3 laps, this year the winner was Gerardo Ulloa... Look it up and if you are interested I can hook you up.

When I raced XC in Alaska in the early 90s, I figured out pretty quickly that any warm up less than an hour didn’t work. It didn’t matter how long the race was, I always tried to ride at least an hour before the start.

You guys race enough that you should check out the Sopro Cycling number plate mounts. They are very well designed/made aluminum brackets that can mount on the bottom of a bike computer mount or on the stem bolts.

Probably not very well. I tend to do better the more technical the event is, so gravel is kinda the opposite. Now if they had races that were a combo of XC and Enduro...

We haven't camped there for a while, but in general, campgrounds were fine, just not especially close (you'd likely drive to town). But they're completely booked out during the race weekend so you have to reserve super early if you want to get something for the race
