the steel chunks that you picked up that said ESCO, are bucket teeth from an excavator/front end loader. made right across the river from me in Portland OR. Well they used to be, theyve been outsourced to China (shocker) for 10 plus years now.
@HighlanderNorth12 жыл бұрын
So, now the esco company has relocated from where it used to be across the river, to China, on the opposite side of the Pacific river? I wish I would've just looked down 2" on my screen and seen your post, because it would've saved me 10 minutes of Google searches to figure out exactly what those worn looking "esco" industrial parts were. At first, I thought they were like mini buckets that would've been attached to a large trencher chain or wheel. But I finally figured out that the business end of those things was on the opposite side from the opening that I assumed were mini buckets for a trencher.

Normally rattlesnakes will curl up, rattle their tail to make their presence known, and move away from a threat than strike it. Usually you get bit because you came upon it suddenly or your dog put it's nose somewhere and startled the snake. I've walked within a foot of one and it rattled its tail to warn me and I jumped away. This was at night. I don't think it had any intention of biting me it just didn't want to be stepped on.

When I started watching, I was worried about your dog and snakes, but I was glad to hear you have him protected. The only time I was worried after that was when you were looking at the homemade bucket. There was a lot of spider web that looked like black widow web. While widow bite isn't usually fatal for people, I don't know about dogs and widow bites. The other area to watch out for widows are the old tires. I used to stack up tires and check them once a week for black widows. I could collect 3 to 5 widows a week that way! The orange cans with electrical connectors look like some form of detector. I suspect something for the rail road, or seismology? I am always interested in electronic stuff, and those would have gone home with me to find out more. Did you get a better shot of the label on the cans? The cave looks more like a mine adit. But looking at the tailings pile, it must be small, like it didn't pan out, or they quit too soon! If you are not mine experienced, I recommend not entering a mine, as there are too many dangers, especially if it is old and not maintained. The main danger isn't things living in them, but hidden dangers of rotted boards or rocks that are about to break off from the ceiling. Never enter a mine alone, and never enter without telling someone who can alert the authorities if you are late getting back in contact with them! Dogs and mines don't mix either, they don't see well, and there are too many places where they can fall.

I usually take trekking poles with me and tap the ground as I'm walking along.... I also stick them into sagebrush before walking by. I was bitten by a rattlesnake walking by a clump of sagebrush.... never saw it, never heard it..... initially thought I just was poked by the sagebrush... (it was dusk). Got back to my truck, and in the headlights could see the fang marks and blood at the puncture site. I was lucky though, it was a dry bite (something like 20% of bites are dry bites where no venom is injected). My dog also was bitten on the nose once by a rattlesnake as she was digging a hole to chase a ground squirrel. Five years later and the puncture marks are still visible!

The cave doesn't appear to be natural. Likely an exploratory mine, judging by the small waste rock piles and excavated face of the surrounding hillside...it was probably a lone prospector or a very small team that gave up after short work. But chances are, they would've poked around a few more spots close by so keep your eyes open.
