Beautiful colour on that first large corn and the colours on the scarlet king wow! Waffles looked good too!

Now I watched the second version. Nice numbers of racers, corn snakes, nice young soft shell turtle and the first scarlet kingsnake with the yellow was something different. It is as if winter doesn’t exist there. It feels like fall but with no crickets. Yes, snakes love trash dumps, probably for the rodents.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention that big invasive (apple?) snail next to the cuban tree frog right after the baby softshell. As usual, the invasives out-numbered the natives, but you definitely found some pretty snakes!!
@NKFherping15 күн бұрын
It’s possible that is one of the native Apple Snails! I’m not sure how to tell them apart though.

Are Corn Snakes the same as Red Rat snakes in the south? I know they call Timbers rattlers Canebrakes. Didn't know if they're the same. Red Rat always seemed more vibrant, but southern snakes generally are. I'm from SE Ohio btw.
@philipmorris484313 күн бұрын
Yes they are the same, lived in Sarasota and Bradenton my entire life and we always called them Corn snakes. Rat snakes have vertical lines on the top and bottom jaws

You should be here in summer! But they are easier to catch when they're cold. Racers are the most common, by far, of the snakes in my yard. Followed by gray rat snakes, red rat snakes (corn snakes), ring neck snakes, the occasional coral snake and pygmy rattlesnake. I have never seen a scarlet king snake on my property, but they are supposedly around. Lizards and frogs everywhere!

Genuine question, do you guys cull any invasives that you come across that are particularly detrimental to the local environment? I've been starting nighttime herping in south florida and have had some encounters with cane toads and cuban tree frogs and wasn't sure what the best approach to encountering them was.

As a Yankee comming from S.F., South Dakota I heard Yankee a few times while in the Marines and stationed in the south. Never heard it voiced as derogatory. But did feel unwanted on one trip through Georgia to take a fellow classmate home for some family matter in the late 1970's. Had S.D. plates and it was getting late and were looking for a hotel, but as we entered every town, a law officer met us at the edge of town and told us to keep going, not to stop there. This happened at about a half dozen towns and figured they must've been calling ahead to let the next town to be ready. We finally just found an off road and slept, but after a couple hours we were woke by the law banging on the window-move on! Was it because of being a Yankee or because the fellow Marine was black or a mix of both? Another time traveling in Georgia, a couple fellow Marines and I stopped at a small mall, all of us yankees. As we entered, there was the sound of a hundred conversations, but a moment later we noticed silence and we looked around and everyone in sight was looking at us and then all went back as befor. I didn't see any mad looks, all it could have been was are northern accent as we were dressed much as any there and didn't look like are Marine hair cuts was off much from the norm there. All three agreed they must not have been use to hearing are accents. But man, we weren't talking unusually loud either! They must have had my mother's hearing! Didn't mean to right a book- sorry. 😊
@tkreitler17 күн бұрын
That is wild that they wouldn't even consider letting you stay in their town. I've lived in the south for the past 40 years (moved from IL) and the attitude towards northerners has changed substantially in that time. I think the vast majority of southerners nowadays wouldn't mean to be disrespectful by calling someone a Yankee. That wasn't the case when I first moved here. People in small southern towns can still instantly identify an outsider and are somewhat suspicious. Even then, they are great people once you break the ice.

@putteslaintxtbks516617 күн бұрын
@tkreitler Small towns in the north can be suspicious of outsiders too. I moved to a small town in Iowa and when on walks, the older women would look at you funny and not say hi back. One old gal across the street would be on her steps almost every day whenI got home, I would wave and say hello and she would just turn and go inside for months. We became good friends after many garden gift baskets and homemade raspberry jelly jars. After she past away, her out of town relatives even came over to let me know she past. That meant a lot to me.

It's really sad to see a lot of trash out in the environment even though reptiles do seem to benefit from it as far as hiding places go. I've actually found most of my pet five lined skinks and some of my pet snakes under trash, tents, furniture and clothing discarded by homeless people when they moved on and left the area. I'm not gonna have any baby skinks this year because my females were too thin to hibernate this year after laying eggs. I've kept them inside this winter and have fattened them up on mealworms and red runner cockroaches. Now that they are fat and happy again it's too late now to put them in hibernation. I'll have to wait until 2026 to breed them again. I would never risk their health by putting them in hibernation too thin just to have them die during the winter.
