Hi guys. When I was about 14 yrs. old I found 2 of these floating down the gutter of the neighborhood street. I thought it was a snake at first glance. Not knowing what it was, I took a chance and caught them by hand. I then put them in my 10 gal. fish tank. Can't remember how long I had them before letting them go. One day I came home from school and found one out on the hardwood floor. He had dried up and I thought he was dead. I said what the heck and dropped him back into the tank. After a short time, he was good as new again. My mom took one to the College here in town and no one knew what it was. It wasn't until a few yrs. ago that I found a picture of one on-line. I was so happy to see it. Yours is only the second one I've ever seen pictures/video of. I am now 65 and have not seen one in the wild since I let mine go. Now that I know how to find find them, maybe I'll take the grand-kids and see if we can find one. Thanks again for sharing your video. Brought back a lot of memories.

Won’t the rake hurt them if you hit them with it? Are they in TN as well? What happens when the ground freezes?
@COLE_and_JAY5 жыл бұрын
The rake would hurt them if we were to strike them with it. We haven't ever had any issues with this method. Most of the time they are just bunched up in the leaf pile we rake up. 👍 In TN you probably would only find them on the very Western border along is some Mississippi River drainages. When the water freezes they just hang out beneath the ice, when the ground freezes they will either bury deeper down in the mud below the freezing point or they will do like they do in the Summer in a situation when the water dries up and create and surround themselves in a sort of mucous ball and aestivate until conditions are good again. If they don't or aren't able to do any of this they either freeze and die or dry up and die lol

Salamanders- unique. I'm glad you both enjoy your work. Maybe at one time, I might have considered doing this hunting expedition. Enjoyed your video. I would be full of mud and leaves. Probably slimy like your friend right there. We have nightcrawlers. They are pretty long as well. During rainy days in the evening, they stick their heads up. One evening I walked past them I didn't know what they were. I think that there were about 50 in a short distance. Check them out sometime. Have fun, again. God Bless.
