I own an 1820's Brick Farmhouse it has many secret compartments. My son has lived there for 2 years and has not found a single one. I will never tell him where. Love the Oak Mantle, Hope it was not destroyed. Sat Down at my drafting bench and drew the plan. As a woodworker this will be a fun plan for my house.

That plywood looks newer than the 1930's even for being hidden behind the mantle. My guess is there was originally a fireplace or a wood stove inside the mantle when the house was first built. Yes, commercial plywood became viable in 1934, but didn't take off extensively until post WWII. When they took out the original fireplace/wood stove insert they built that box with the fake marble (also doesn't look to be 1930's) and when they did so they added the secret compartment.

They may be as lucky as me. I have so many hidden places in my house, that was build by a bootlegger. I just posted about it. Even an entire secret room. He even had a speakeasy in what I call the cottage, he had dancing girls according to a neighbor who was 100 years old when I moved here. From the outside it looks just like a small normal house of the Great Depression years.

In the early 1980's, a friend of mine was renting an old farmhouse in NY. The basement walls were the stone foundation, but one wall was planked with horizontal wooden boards. There was a tiny gap between a couple of boards, and when he shone a light in there, we could see rows of dusty bottles. So we pulled off a few boards, which revealed many gallons of depression-era... and before?... gallon bottles of what turned out to be home made grape and molasses wine. Someone was hiding it, long ago, and it was completely forgotten about. We drank some of it. In fact, when we went to NYC for dinner with friends, and his brother and his wife, we ate at a "bring your own" (alcohol) place. We brought a bottle of the molasses wine... which was identified by the waiter, a transplant from Illinois. He said he had family that still made it at the time. I still have two sealed bottles of it, in my basement. It is probably 90 years old or more by now.
