The reason it's like that is it's very likely the owners died, did not leave a will and there was no family to inherit the house. In cases like this if there is no next of kin, the council organise and pay for the funeral. Then they will try and find any family, when you see photos taken out of frames and layer out in derelict properties like these it's because a team from the council (by team, it's usually one or two people) have gone in to try and find any information on relatives to trace them. Quite often you might find names on the backs of photos that can give you a clue. They also look through all the official records that the council has, as well as anything else they can find in the house as well as talk to neighbours etc. If nobody can be found, then the house is left for a period of 12 years. If nobody has come forward in that time - the property goes to the Crown, ie HMRC who then sell it. But by this time most properties have fallen into ruin, and nobody wants them or a developer might by it for the land. Even if a family member can be found, they may not want the house - this is called 'disclaiming' an inheritance. The main reason for doing this is because you immediately owe HMRC 40% of the property value- you wake up, find a relative you have never met has left you a property valued at £800,000 you suddenly owe the taxman £320,000! The property is falling apart, needs a shed load spending on it before you can even think of selling it - most people can't just fork out £100k to renovate a house. Plus all the other costs, clearing it, any outstanding debts (yep you inherit those too) plus legal fees. Before you know it you are up to your eyeballs in debt - hence many people do the same thing and say nope - don't want it and disclaim it. This is a big reason you see houses in this condition left empty. They are stuck in legal red tape which will go on for decades.

@@55tranquility well that's very interesting I never knew about the cost of inheriting a property thank you for that.
