The drain plug was not installed on most transmissions to eliminate a possible source for leak. The dipstick was removed because they sell that transmission to other manufacturers across the world. This eliminates the other manufacturers to design their own dipstick for their vehicle.

I have a good friend that is a Master Ford Tech and he told me a few years back that the 6R80’s have a solenoid that bypasses the trans cooler until it gets up to a predetermined temperature. He said with a fresh trans, it can end up being 1 to 2 quarts low if it doesn’t circulate through the cooler. I always drive one of these about 10 miles and raise it back up to check the level again without ever shutting the truck off. I’ve had several that were a quart low..

On these newer tranny's And I found out this from BSM motors {FordMakeULocal } Channel here on you tube -Brian has stated that the old design used Steel Balls in the valve train -not the solenoid mind you. The newer tranny's use rubber balls and one in particular will wear as it ages and shrink over time and eventually get stuck in its seat and this seems to be a issue that can cause shifting problems. The only way to fix this is to again remove the valve body split the two haves apart and replace the rubber balls . Just food for thought for you and to all those reading my comment.

3.26.24. You are right about the swivel sockets! While they are expensive, they warrantee them unconditionally. I worked at a water treatment plant and our plant mechanics say the same thing about the swivel socket. You can’t beat the snap on ones. They last longer and like I said earlier, they stand behind them and warranty them. No questions asked.👊🏽

Hi Kenny actually the filter does look different, the intake tube at11:35 is shaped different.I believe the 4 out facing bumps keep the filter in place by pushing up from the pan, then the suction tube sits in the sump of the pan.Often times the cheaper filters are sometimes paper mesh instead of superfine brass mesh. And they can also go with a totally different mesh size.that might allow larger particulates into the solenoids or valve-body piston bores causing issues. This model has a lot of solenoids.,good luck.

Tip, If you plan a long journey say 2,000 Km or 1,200 miles do get any work that needs doing done a few weeks vefore traveling and not a few days beforehand. Why? Because it will give a chance for any fault to show itself. If for any reason something was missed or not done correctly.

A lot of times on the Fords you'll get a gear ratio code in all the gears particularly used to see a lot on the 5r55e in the rangers and some of the sport tracks I guess in the explorers and the problem was caused by a stainless steel servo pin that wore the aluminum housing a couple of companies have remanufactured servo pins that have an expandable rubber section or nylon section and the oil flows in through a hole added at the end through the piston and causes that nylon area to sweat out and seal itself and that usually solves the problem it's simple and it can be installed with the pan removed it's right there if your clothes are showing discrepancies in all of the gears for ratio that's usually what it's going to be

40 odd years ago, when I would change oil n filter in an automatic transmission I would do so after taking the machine for a run and oil was hot. This did 2 things,. Made the oil more viscus or more free flowing So more oil dropped into bucket. 2 It Kept any dirt from clutches seals etc in suspension in the oil. So all or most dirt grit came out with the oil.

Vehicles have become so convoluted, if you had a requirement list of what you can really not do without , it’s a mental exercise I’ve done often. Ever since the japanese cars started with front wheel drive, and before? then all manufacturers began to go nuts with gadgets and marketing ploys? Most of the electronic this and that. We could probably do without? Yes we get more sophisticated with our engineering , but do manufacturers actually need to pack everything in every car.

Years ago the manufacturers got tired of people adding snake oil to their transmissions and then taking them in to the dealers for "warranty repair" Same thing goes for folks changing to a "premium" auto trans fluid , because "Red Line " or "Royal Purple" or "Super Chartreuse" is "better" , and then finding out that "Better" Universal Fluid isn't always better . Sometimes it's just different enough to foul things up. Eliminating dipstick tubes was partly self-defense on their part , and partly greed, making getting them serviced becoming a job that only the dealer could do.

My two cents. I would do a pan drop and change the filter and about 6 litres of fluid. Removing the pan removes a lot of material (metal) that can affect the electric connections for the solenoids. If it starts to slip either add some modifiers or save the liquid that was dropped and reuse it. I would suggest a lot of transmissions are overfilled after a fluid change- this results in foaming and therefore slipping of the clutch discs.
