Since bringing Project Marsha - our 1970 Plymouth Fury III convertible - home and getting her running, we've wanted to get her to spin the tires. Sadly, the worn out 318 and wounded 904 automatic just didn't have what it took to do it. Plus, our super freeway-flying 2.76-geared open differential would never let us! That's why we stepped up to a beefy Eaton TrueTrac and some (slightly) stiffer 3.23 gears. SPOILER ALERT: she finally spins 'em but some of you might call it cheating.

I worked in salvage in the late 80's. It was sad to see lots of BB Furys in the yard. Any SBC 350 builder was gone in a day or two. Mopar 383 just sat cricket quiet.

@@moparconnection Sounds good see you there. I have an idea for you if I'm not missing it, a list off MOPAR shows and swap meets throughout the year. I try to attend the ones that are not too far to drive but it is hard to go to a single place to see what is upcoming. Just an idea, you may already considered, I just think it might be handy. I for one would use it. Thanks again Kevin.

In a 1965 Barracuda with a very warm 78 Teen I had a 7 1/4 LBP out of a 74 Dart Swinger It had an open 2.76 gears. Took a 8.25 out of a Aspin, 2.94 gears open. Not much improvement. When the 8.25 started leaking at the pinion I had to put the 7 1/4 back in to get to work everyday. I took the 8.25 and pulled it all down, new seals and bearings but put a 3.55 Suregrip out of a 8 3/8's Dodge van. The 8.25 and 8 3/8 are the same carrier and ring gear size. Everyone on a Mopar forum said NO but we did a lot of measuring and it fit. Using the brake backing plates and drums from the 7 1/4 I was able to put 10X2.5 drums on the 8.25, better than the 10X1.75's Going from 2.76 open to 3.55 Suregrip was VERY big improvement.

And you’re needing to go manual? Well those 5-speed Tremecs are in a LOT of Mustangs, which get wrecked often. A new bell housing and throw-out bearing is cheap if you can fish out a gearbox from a totaled GT.

Just a little recommendation. Use a drip pan under the brake /backing plates when using Brake Clean. Keeps the dirt/brake dust/oils off of your driveway and helps the out Environment. Keeps the driveway clean and keeps the dirty stuff out of the gutters and drains when you hose off your driveways. Also if you use a wire wheel to clean anything that gets sealed and has bearings/fluid, Be sure to use an air hose to blow out any possible pieces off wire that may come off the wire wheel and possibly get into the bearing/gear area. What type of gear oil did Eaton recommend in the Sure-Grip ? Thanks for the good video.

It was just a suggestion for all the Mopar faithful who will do this at their own home. Just wondered on the gear oil if Eaton recommended any synthetics or friction modifiers like most other manufacturers do. Thanks for helping to keep the Hobby alive. "take a kid to a car show "
@moparconnection
@moparconnection 2 жыл бұрын
They were all very good suggestions. And no, because there's no clutches in the TrueTrac it doesn't require a friction modifier like a factory SureGrip.

Does the 1969 Factory Service Manual you made reference to work for the 1970 car? Also, disclose cost for parts. Do you wanna do the same on my '70 Fury III ex-squad? With my 440 I will get rubber out of third gear.
@moparconnection
@moparconnection 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the manual should work for most (not all) of this work. There’s some obvious changes of course. And I didn’t think I had to drop prices because 1. everyone’s got Google and 2. You might find better prices than me.

@@moparconnection Generalzed info from a 1965 or 1973 shop manual will work on this 1970 8 3/4. Ma Mopar did not change much as far as setup spec's on these rear ends. The older 1950's thru early 60's Bolt on the Drum axel 8 3/4 are different.
