Please invest in some riding helmets and a back protector for u and the family. Especially for riding Stirling as he sounds like he can be a jumpy horse if something spokes him.

@@mangum3006I know experienced riders that are dead due to a head injury from falling off of a horse so I will keep my helmet on. It only takes one time. The horses I am talking about were well trained and just happened to trip. Sterling looks to be a bit spooky so I wouldn’t trust it.

Have your vet out to see if Sterling may need a nebulizer. I've seen them help horses with coughs! Also soaking hay may help if it's triggered by dust/dirt. Congrats on the new horse!

I’m so thrilled for you!!! Just a little advice. Please look into a tie blocker tie safety ring. It will allow your horse to stand tied but if Sterling gets scared, if he pulls back it won’t damage his poll or neck. They are inexpensive on Amazon or most tack shops. I’m a Yaya (grandma) trainer/instructor. Blessings to you!!!

Please, please, please. Find a very reputable and local trainer in your area that has experience starting horses. It's amazing that you're taking this horse in, but he is completely different from Holiday. Having multiple trainers is a crucial part of learning about horsemanship. You will learn there are a lot of people who really don't know what they're doing. A responsible trainer wouldn't have given you a green horse with medical issues. Now, if this is just going to be a companion horse, go for it. However, riding that horse after the signals of pain and discomfort he gave you, is a recipe for disaster. You, or your kids could be seriously hurt just by a freak accident, and more than likely, everyone will blame the horse. Horses give signals before they finally explode. Learn to listen to those silent cues. Have a vet evaluate him, and send him to a professional trainer if you guys intend on riding him. This is all if he is medically able to. Horses are amazing, and they're so much fun. Please don't let your experience with them be ruined when you can take the necessary steps to make it enjoyable for horse and human.

I’d suggest treating both horses for ulcers and giving them a pre/probiotic for a little while. The trailer ride to your home followed by a new routine, new people and new friends (emu) will likely cause some ulcers which will lead to unwanted behaviour. Omeprazole you have to get from your vet and the probiotics you can get from your local feed or tack store.

Who doesn't love a pally? Favorite color. I've owned 5 palominos in my life. Learning experiences. This transition and introductions appears to be much smoother and safer. There are lots of heave aid products you can add to Sterlings feed that will bring him relief. (If he has heaves.) Also watering down his hay. Anyway you can eliminate dust.
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse
@TheLittlePalletFarmhouse 6 ай бұрын
So Sterling was vet checked for heaves and it was not present enough to be a confirmed diagnosis… so we treated it more like mild seasonal allergies…the only symptom we have ever observed is a random cough from time to time which has been easily controlled by environmental management and occasional homeopathic supplements he has no problem being ridden or in ground work, its even been difficult to pin down a trigger (such as dry, dusty hay, summer months, or periods of heavy pollen count). In fact when i was planning to film him for our youtube channel and explain his cough I managed to capture a single random cough in 10 weeks of training ! But yes- good advice regardless, dusty hay is never good!

I grew up riding quarter horses that we would turn out to pasture in the Winter and bring them back in the Spring when we needed them. My dad always told me that if I could feel a little bulge under the saddle toward the back when I was sitting on one (like there was a small melon under the saddle), that it was thinking about bucking - whenever I felt that I made sure to be very gentle, no quick movements, no running, basically let him walk with gentle direction until it went away :) It was always touch and go for the first week or two but I never got bucked off - can't say the same for many of the "cowboys" that worked for my dad and thought they knew more than he did though :)

@Equestrian_horses680 That's why I said her little leg kick. I felt like I could relate to a horse and it amused me. No one would enjoy an animal getting hurt by having a big one. Everytime my daughter startles me, I scream and jump in the air. She laughs at me. If I jumped and fell and broke my leg she wouldn't think it's funny. Nothing wrong with enjoying a little bit of personality in another living creature. Holiday wasn't out of control with it. Just lost her cool for a second.

Horses will typically do this when they meet and Holiday was establishing her personal space boundary- Sterling yielded to her request. There is a huge benefit to him in that He was raised with his mother in a herd with other horses… there is nothing better for a young (male) horse than to be in a herd with other mares and his mama because he learned from a young age how to respect space and to have good manners. Also horses always place their feet with incredible accuracy so if she intended to make contact she would have!

Sterling has a really gentle and honest nature. Will show his exuberance playing in the pasture with other horses because he is young but wouldn't describe him as highly strung. He rarely gets on adrenaline and thinks his way through situations, has never put a foot wrong under saddle. The saddle they are using is a treeless bareback pad lined with sheepskin and designed to help riders find their natural balance.

I love how you guys make plans for each of your animals so they have their own space in their own barn/aviary. I will be so excited when the aviary is finished for you guys. I’m sure you’re as excited and anxious for it as we all are for you. I’d like how you’ve been going about getting an education for the horses, for yourself, and for the kids. Horses can be very dangerous, and in fact, the last horse we had on our farm was a mustang gelding that had never been around humans for the first three years of his life and I think I said that right but I could be wrong because he was an Appaloosa stud when my Dad purchased him… my father had been around horses, his entire life because his grandfather came straight from England and he brought over Morgan horses and Percheron horses with registered papers, intending to make a lot of money on not only the horses, but seedlings of a line of apple orchards, have a variety of apples. So my father helped my grandfather with his farms and he had his own Morgan horse and we have a picture of my father, sitting on a Morgan horse in a double breasted suit jacket, and a dapper hat as they said in the time.. … but he was y use to working w/ challenging, and difficult courses, so imagine when he gets this Appaloosa stud that refuses to let anything touch him or get near him. I know my father made arrangements for him to get gilded and take some of the wildness out of him but it only made him angrier and one day he ditched my sister when they were almost home, and you ran her down into a ditch, and the fence was almost at ditch level & his name is Dandy… and he decided he was tired of going for a walk and he wanted to be home and get a drink and some grain and the next thing my sister knows is she’s going flying across the Barbwire fence and it slices, her neck open from one near artery to the other near artery on the opposite side. My dad was not at home at the time, but my fiancé was, and he drove my sister and my mom to town to the ER. He was studying nursing in college, and he happen to be out there fishing at the pond across the road.… His favorite pastime, and when she came up to the house, mom could see a lot of blood but couldn’t see a wound site until she lifted up her chin and when blood started running out, she put her chin back down and told Sandy to holler for Kent… My fiancé’s name… and let him know. We had an emergency for him to come as quick as he could and she said she put a couple of tea towels underneath Cheryl’s , chin but not to lift it at all. 😂🌈🙏♥️ it really was a miracle situation .. because the doctor said if that Barbed wire had been an eighth of an inch closer, she would’ve lost her life before they could’ve got to town. This is before ambulance came to the country…. She had 320 stitches, approximately before sending her home ..& told her to stay off the horse for four weeks. That was very hard for my sister if she love that Animal. But it wasn’t long after that when I was walking to the barn to go get a calf for my father and not really paying attention to the horse, tied up nearby to the hydrant nearby, as a normal teenager, my head was up in the clouds as my dad would say… When you suddenly saw that same mustang horse rear up and kick towards me at My head… I heard my dad’s voice suddenly yelling at me to get out of his way, and that brought me to the current forefront of what was actually taking place when my dad yelled second time “ just almost killed You!!!!!😂😂 my father was so angry when he saw this that he came out of the barn where he was working, and he grabbed that horse, and he tied him up with no extra room to get anything in his pen, and he Left Him that way until we heard a semi Coming down the hill from our house and dad informed us that he was coming to pick up our horse and he was going to the auction before somebody actually did get killed on the farm. He was really sorry because he wanted that to be a good horse for the family, but that was not a good choice. The Man that sold him to us had not been completely honest, and when dad tried to make a fair deal with him, he denied that he had ever indicated that he could return them within a certain amount of time and get his money back. He had no other choice than to take him to the auction house and sale Him back. Frankly, I was glad to see him go because he caused a lot of other problems that I won’t mention. I will just caution you that getting a Mustang that has not been handled a lot predicted by children just be very very careful before you let them ever handle them, and by all means get helmets for them and Riding elbow pads and knee pads because they break very easily. Many children and young teenagers who have been used to riding think they’re invisible and you don’t have to look very far to read a lot of sad horse, jumping deaths. Your children will want to do what they see you do. I think you are beautiful animals regarding your two horses and I think you’re being very wise and how you’re letting them getting acclimated into the pasture with the emus. I love your channel and I wish you guys a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving.😊🦃🥔🍎♥️

So funny story, when the introduction to the emus and horse happened I honestly thought “huh, I don’t think horses and emus can cohabitate.” Literally two seconds later KZbin recommended a video of an animal rescue that had emus with horses and cows. So that answered my question lol.
