Good work. A spare is required equipment as far as I am concerned. I have yet to have a situation where the damaged tire was usable, everything from gashes in the sidewall to complete sidewall disintegration. Also, I am regularly in locations that are off the beaten path, so even if you have cell coverage, the response is going to take a while.

hope it’s worth it, and keep us updated how many time have you used the spare i the life you have used your vehicle! I keep a portable air pump and tire repair kit in both my x and 3. have to call roadside to put on a spare on the X in 5 years of ownership.

lol i unfortunately had to use it last month!! I picked up a bolt in one of the rear wheels and had to get my tire repaired. I haven't had to use Tesla roadside yet, but have had AAA take hours at times. Our roads are horrible in the winter with potholes and tire damage, so for me personally, I thought getting the spare made sense.

Thanks for a great, empowering video! Just did what you did, and love the results. Two mods I made: 1: I stuffed some rubber backed soundproofing in the L and R corners where the carpeting left a hole. Can barely notice the carpet is missing there. 2: I placed a styrofoam pillar under the section of the spare tire was hanging unsupported towards the rear of the car. Now when I hit a bump, the tire doesn't dislodge and raise the trunk's false-floor.

I finally got the ordered capernt to finish. I will see if I can add some photos to see the finished product. I have a plastic storage tote with car supplies that fits perfect under the tire. Glad the video helped, thanks for watching.

Hi, are those black pieces( after you remove the trim) on the left and the right of the bucket made of plastic or made of metal? Curious if I could use those black long portions in the back for strapping things down too, but not useful if they’re made of plastic

Nicely done. Could you also leave the spare slightly deflated as long as you have a tire pump in the car? That might give you a 1/4 inch more.
@launchedandloaded

It's definitely an option if that is something you would want to do. I prefer to leave it full and not worry if the pump will work. Thanks for watching.

I wish you could fit a full size spare. I agree with you, it’s quick and easy to change it yourself. I’ve waited hours before, I’ve had leaks too fast to keep pumping up etc. So much easier to just quickly change a spare yourself and if you pay attention it’s still safer to get off the side of the road.

Is there a reason why you don’t deflate it to store it and just carry a small compressor to inflate to 60 PSI if you need it?
@launchedandloaded
@launchedandloaded Жыл бұрын
The spare that I purchased, deflating is wouldn't have made that much verticle difference to get it to fit the way I laid it in the trunk Then it is something else to carry and hope it works when you need it. I appreciate you watching the video.

Another thing is you might not be able to inflate the tire if it loses its adherence to the wheel.

Thank you for the great video. One quesiion please: One person is selling the Modern Spare Rim/Tire. but, he does not know what model it is. I read on the Modern Spare Web Site, it said the Model Y should have 18” X 4” with 5X114.3mm PCD (Bolt Pattern). I called their customer service. They said these should be marked on the back of the rim (on the spoke). But, the Seller said he did not see anything. I wonder if you see these marked on the back of the RIM as instructed by the Customer Service? thanks,

@launchedandloaded
@launchedandloaded Жыл бұрын
thanks for your concern! part of why we did this was so the tire is secure while driving vs just having it flail around in the trunk. The tire itself is wedged in pretty well (can confirm since we had to use the spare a month or so ago). In addition to the tension fit it’s also under the trunk floor and we have a trunk liner on top of the carpeting. If there was an impact hard enough to dislodge it from the current location, there would be a lot of other risks from the incident. this is our family vehicle so safety was a priority in our decision and also where we leave things in the car.

@@launchedandloaded I took mine apart. The only thing I can think is to get a few strips of heavy duty Velcro and run it from the side “cubbies” across the bottom piece to the other cubby. Do it with 2-3 Velcro strips and hope it hold the trunk floor down in the event of an accident.

You do know they sell aerosol cans of FIX a FLAT right? You spray the contents into the tires air stem & away you go. OR, at home, add GREEN TIRE SLIME to each tire & if you ever get a puncture, the slime will seal it for you. I run Slime in all my tires and cant remember the last time I had a flat. Sure is easier than hacking up your car. !
@launchedandloaded
@launchedandloaded 11 ай бұрын
Everyone has their own repair methods. All pieces that we altered are easily replaceable back to factory if needed. Where we live potholes are a major issue, which blowout sidewalls. No tire slime will fix that. Yes it works for nails or screws but not the issues we see in out area. Plus tire shops hate when the tires are loaded with that slime.

Oh my goodness, another one creating a projectile in a otherwise walk away accident. Please people, dont follow this advise. Im 56 and have traveled from Ma to fla (round trip) atleast 20 times and from NY to Va bch atleast that many times not to mention the yrs and yrs of driving to work on local and highway roads and I've had to change my tire ONCE. I rather not do it myself today so if I have to wait an hour for Tesla or AAA to come help, I'll sit back and wait.
@launchedandloaded
@launchedandloaded 8 ай бұрын
Hi Henry, Thanks for your comments and thoughts. The tire is secured very well in the sub trunk with the foam wedging it in place. It's also possible to add straps for additional support if you were more comfortable with that! Fitting the tire in the sub trunk securely in the foam and also under the carpet is much safer than leaving it in the trunk. You seem to have great luck with tires! NY winters and also a job where we sometimes go on client visits can be rough on our tires. Between potholes and nails in tires I have had to use a spare at least 5 times in my life and I'm almost half your age! To each their own and the necessity obviously varies based on lifestyle and local conditions but for us it made sense. I have had to wait upwards of 3 hours for AAA mid day before, so being able to swap the tire and get on my way is well worth it for me!
