Howdy! guys and gals. Wavey and I were blessed enough to meet Dave Seng, a 17 year employee of the Army core of engineers and lock master (amongst many other related jobs.) We had him over to the Shanty Boat for dinner in Paducah to ask him some questions about the lock and dams on the riverways of America. We could have kept him for 8 hours straight, but kept it to about a half hour. I hope you enjoy.
See you over on Back Waters and Back Roads

That was a very interesting interview Dave very accommodating and well spoken and enthusiastic. Making it an engaging and informative video. The 30 minutes went quickly. Neat to get the other perspective. Here in tulsa we are connected with a port and navigational channel that connects with the Mississippi. I visited the local lock it has a visitor center and platform for watching the operations. Took the kids, very mesmerizing to watch the tugs float up out of the pit. I like your side adventures and interviews. Blue

Cool information. I wanted to work for the corp when i was going through boot camp for the Navy but i went down the wrong path, made bad choices. It is truly amazing how much product goes up and our rivers. The average joe thinks it is all from trucks and trains. Great interview 👍❤️✌️🙏🇺🇸🛵🚣‍♂️

It's sometimes a toss up as to where to put a video buddy. One like this might disrupt the almighty algorithm on BWBRs :) I also had to render it in low resolution, which further messes with the overlords. Dave is definitely interesting enough to be top billing;)

I wish that I had seen this video when you first did it. I've found over the years that the guys who are Lockmasters, are good folks. On the cost of the Olmstead L&D, it was supposed to be like a 10 to 15 year build, it took around 30 years and I seem to recall seeing that it's final cost came to something like $30 BILLION, far beyond the original cost estimate. I also think that it was the most expensive program that the USACE ever has had. Like Biden or not, in the big infrastructure bill he got through Congress a few years ago, a big chunk of money was finally allocated to do much of the long deferred maintenance work on Corps of Engineers Locks and Dams.

Thanks for this interview! I have camped at COE campgrounds when my wife and I were full-time in the RV and enjoyed the beautiful lakes they all had. Never knew about the lock system until I started following you and Wavy. Be safe and have fun!

They have some good folks who work at Meldahl. I used to lock through Meldahl quite often when I did trips up from Cincy to Augusta, Maysville or Ripley. I love New Richmond. I almost bought a little place up north of town on 132.
