You are exactly correct. I live in a tourist area and every single piece of property is owned and controlled. NO FREE PARKING everywhere. But living on a boat, the water is our last bit of “freedom”. Most all waterfront towns have “day docks” that are free and allow boaters to resupply, refuel and have access to amenities. Nobody owns the ocean, it’s our last refuge as a society. Just my $.02

Several years ago, Wayne said on one of his videos essentially that being on the water is one of the only places left where you are truly free. You just said the same. I am convinced that you, both are correct. We are losing our campgrounds and our freedoms in van life and they continue to disappear more and more each day. I grew up in a Chicago Suburb - Park Ridge. It was a dry community growing up and had parking meters in the uptown (downtown) area. They changed the laws. Now there are restaurants along the main street and elsewhere. Parking meters were removed and signs put up that allows 3 hr free parking. Business is booming.

Destin Florida sux. In 2016, my wife and I were in an RV traveling the US after I had punched the clock for 40 years. We had sold everything and wanted to see the country. We arrived at Destin Beach State Park and we wanted to walk on the white sand. We wer stopped by park rangers because NO DOGS ALLOWED. I had poop sacks for my pup but NO. Move along now. IMHO, Destin sux. We spent 3 years living in the RV and traveled every where except NW area (cause those folks are crazy). My wife got sick in Canada so now I travel with you on KZbin! Ahoy Mighty Brenton! Thanks to governor Oswald West in 1913 Oregon's Beaches were made accessible (wet sands) to the public. This meant if the Shanty Boat is capable, you could Beach her for a Wavey walk anywhere along the 362 miles of *Specialness*, that is the Oregon Coastline. In 1967 governor Tom McCall extended public access to Oregon's Beaches, to the vegetation line (seagrass). My parents wasted no time when the Beach Bill was passed, as they immediately took me to Twin Rocks Beach in 1967, where toes-to-sand on public land, had that 4 year old feeling Grand. My head is so full of responses to the things you’ve said on this episode. The world in Destin, and so many other places has transformed into a place or your average Joe bag of donuts guy is not actually welcome to participate In the lifestyle that’s available for those that can’t afford it. It’s perfectly fine for folks like us to work at marinas restaurants as delivery drivers or any other job that serves those that are there to be served. It’s an age old pecking order. It’s the halves and the have nots. The vast majority of those that are financially well off have worked very hard for their money. The problem is they have forgotten or never experienced what it’s like to be one of the have nots.

When you started talking, that song, sign, sign everywhere a sign, came into my head ..lol But yeah, I know exactly what you're saying and think you're right. I think it just boils down to Greed. People today are more greedy than ever. It's all about getting the All Mighty Dollar from you. And they try to set it up so that you have no choice but to go through them. Personally I think every town and City should have a free public dock, with some common sense restrictions of course, such as no free overnight stays. Just a basic No Frills dock that allows people to come ashore during the day, with a 3-hour limit for free dockage. Which is enough time for people to come ashore to get provisions or go sightsee or go to a restaurant or whatever... The point is, you shouldn't have to dig out your wallet just because you want to step ashore. It doesn't take away business from marinas because they make their money from their customers paying for seasonal dockage , short-term dockage and amenities.

I am landlocked, so, I have no choice except to rent a slip at a Marina. actually, it is a pretty good deal. I have a secure slip behind a locked access and electricity and fresh water, for less than 9 dollars a day. I have to keep that slip year round, and I intend to keep it, most nearby marinas are 3-4 times that rate. My Marina is old, they are spending millions upgrading the facilities. I also have free use of nice shower and bath facilities at the marina.

Well I would go further. You said "if there's no sign you should be able to go ashore". I say that you should be able to go ashore anywhere unless there is a sign. Also, you kind of said "there should be allowances built into the system for budget boaters to be able to loop". I say, there should be no restrictions placed on boaters, but options to go up market for those who want to. Basically I'm agreeing whole heartedly with your view, but that personal freedom must come first as long as its safe, corporate profits should not override that. I totally agree with the greed of this world. But as a businessman and a capitalist I appreciate when a municipality or a private owner provides a doc for me to tie the dingy to and charges a reasonable fee for the construction and maintenance of said doc. It is no different than if I take my Mercedes or my chevette or even my motorcycle into a business area that I have to pay a parking fee. I am thankful for the access and accessibility to shore.

You really can't expect a private business to offer services for free, presumably some of them if you ask nicely maybe they will allow you to tie up your dingy for a bit. But realistically the amenity you're looking for a dock like that needs to be provided by the municipalities imo.

You say you're a capitalist, well, welcome to Florida. Those businesses are there simply to make their owners money, not to serve any sort of "greater good". I think you will find (or maybe have already found) that the more prosperous and developed any area is, the harder it gets to travel cheaply. In regard to your idea about free docking to promote local business, you will find that more likely to be the practice in areas that really need the help. I'm thinking here about the small towns along the NYS Barge Canal for instance. Free overnight docking is pretty much the rule there, sometimes even with free electrical hook-ups. Destin FL is booming, there is no business incentive for them to offer anything free to the budget boater, so they won't. That's just the way it is.

Hey Brenton, I had thoughts of your stresses with anchorages, shore access, and "vessel status" being questioned more when you arrive into various communities. Especially the nuts-to-butts areas like Florida. Public Access has long been a topic of discussion and legislation, and likely varies greatly from State to State. I think you are discovering the lack of Public Docking / Shoreline that relates in proximity to needed services for those traveling and/or living aboard like yourself. I am not aware of enough boating Apps or online resources that may be available to assist what you are looking for. But yes, the balancing of Public vs. Private is challenging, especially when it comes to the value of land which exponentially increases in and near developed communities. I appreciate you sharing these experiences and observations. 🙏⚓️☀️🙋🏻‍♂️

Guess how many cruiser loop video's I've watched...."ZERO". Plenty of free docking when you get back home.

I’ve been on both sides of this argument I worked at a large marina in the Keys in the early 70s and the Keys were full of hippies living on old sailboats and they were all the time coming in to fill up their water bottles and to leave their trash never buying anything. They would slip in at night and break into the bathhouse and leave a mess so we refused to deal with them but on the other hand I envied there lifestyle up to the point of disrespect for the business. I have been traveling on a $200,000 sailboat and try to anchor in an anchorage in the the Miami area and be heckled by a Karen who said we were blocking her view. She shined spotlights on us through the night and yelled at the top of her lungs anytime we came on deck in the morning when we pulled the hook we gave her double moon salute and went on our way. Most cities if they have paid morning balls have dingy docks and in you don’t have much choice in certain areas because they don’t want you to damage the sea grass or coral. Let’s face the facts There are so many abandoned boats in the water just left to trash the water ways and bays that folks just have a bad idea about anything that isn’t shiny and fancy it’s nothing new just a little more prominent in todays world.

I'm for the capitalism but due to what we pay in taxes seems the government has to much waste in what they spend. I think the reason there aren't more public access or pass-through type arrangements is that people worry (too much I think) about vandals or just inconsiderate people who will trash the place. But I also think that kind of atmosphere of low expectations begets the attitude of not taking care of things. Like with children, if you give them the expectation that they're responsible adults they will (mostly) act like it, but if you set the opposite expectation then that's what you'll get.

That makes way to much sense. Common sense. There should be a low or no cost option built in to many things, luckily there are in many cases. but there could always be more. Problem is we are People ,,, we take more and give less, so the fine line is How much is enough to keep the abusers away $10 for a dingy dock is completely reasonable in a over populated place like the intercostal of FL. And free on the mississippi is also what I would expect.

I’ve been to Destin a few times. Really nice place, but it’s definitely centered around tourism. Most people who work in town don’t live in town.

The poor scooter is taking a salty beating :( I unloaded it a week ago to explore Duafuskie island. Had to WD40 the poor thing to come back to life. The ignition was rusted in the off position! But it keeps running. In all honesty, I paid 550 bucks and she's a one way mule of a scooter. The barge has an aluminum lip below the door to keep splash and any water that comes on deck from the cabin. We've not had any get inside. Destin is a full blown tourist town

I get what you mean about we the taxpayer being charged to use public land. I can see a small fee here and there to provide services and upkeep, but if it's public it should be available to all no matter how thick their wallet is. The football stadium example is crony capitalism, which is by definition fascism (state and private partnership). While there are good folks living out on the water, I imagine that there are homeless folks living on the water that are little better than the folks in the tent cities. Drugs and crime are all too common in the homeless community and because nice guys on boats aren't a large community, there probably isn't a lot of money to be made catering to them. Another channel, EV shows an anchored boat near Miami who was in the process of dumping his holding tank in the bay. The large brown smear extending from his boat was a dead give away. It's a tough call but it's just too difficult to sort the good from the bad. I'd love to take a few years and live on a sailboat down there so I'm not against what you're doing at all but you need to see both sides. If you had a million dollar home on the waters edge, do you want an aquatic tent city anchored off your beach?

It's a boom, bust cycle. Florida has gone over the crest of the hill. Most of i it is pretty unpleasant now. Traffic is horrible, prices of everything are high. Florida was very nice 10 years ago. High interest rates, high insurance, and crime will fix Florida over a long enough time frame. We probably won't be around to see it.

The freedom to move and travel seems to be on paper only. Its sad most of the townships do not set aside peoper public ammeneties. The people living there are "in" and they view everyone as "not in" As for boating goes, its one of the last freedoms. In Michigan in the city of detroit there are parking lots near stadiums that are 10 to 30 for the day. So a boat fee of 10 isn't really anything. If you had to do it daily then that would suck but most are just passing

People ask me where I'm from and I don't know if the right answer is "right here" because I'll be living in that location for at least 2 weeks and in the area for a month. If that's correct, then I'm not a tourist. If I say Kentucky, then clearly I'm a tourist. In the end, who cares, it's just a word. I get to know the whole area I'm living in, I remember the cashier's name at the grocery. When does a tourist become a short-term resident? Again, who cares really.

"signs, signs, everywhere theres signs; fucking up the scenery, wasting my time. do this, dont to that, cant you read the signs???" im split on this. i am from the US but i live in japan. people here respect rules and common courtesy and public places are clean. in the US is never fails that public spaces are a beacon for the criminal element and the ne'er do well. either you are at personal risk to go there or they are filthy. at this moment in time i prefer to live in japan. and, yes....people who can afford to will continue to pay the $10 to come ashore. when it become not profitable for businesses to do so (i.e. it is more costly to clean up behind the 1 in 10 asshole, or the vandal) the businesses will continues this way. they lose more money opening it up to the general public than to make it more restrictive. no business can stay in business without profit . to further your hunger for the life you are living i highly encourage you to read "sailing alone around the world" by joshua slocum, the masterpiece written by bernard moitessier: "the long way" cheers.

I read that book many years ago, along with about every book on sailing I could find. At one time (in my 20s) I wanted to sail around the world. Now I watch folks here on YT doing it, I don't think I need to sail the world now, but just explore the nooks and crannies. If would love to get back to Europe and Scandinavia before ita completely conquered by the NWO

I would not usually suggest books out of order but his “sailing to the edge of time” is exceptional. As are all his books. And - totally different direction - if you have not read Zorba the Greek you must.

Always aggravating when government in any form builds something with tax money and then charges us to use it in anyway. Park entrance/day fees, annual passes to government land they declared a park, forest, monument and so forth, are just plain wrong.

Ive lived in Destin my whole life. It was a small beach town with a charter fishing fleet and that was the main industry. Motels turns into hotels, then hotels turned in to condos and condos turned in to resorts. All of this is progress, some good and sum unfavorable. Destin is a modern day gold rush town, with people from out of town flooding in and trying to see how they can make money and a living on the beach. It's not a simple living and most don't survive the off season. you stood in front of a plaque that you read complaining about no public access while in the background the city has three free transient slips that you could have docked at. granted they are not deep water slips but you don't require a deep water slip. Unfortunately people do abuse this and it will be taken away over time because of abuse. My only real complaint about this video is that when you travel through a industrial port you don't complain about how industry how blocks out access to everyone. You jut take it up the transom with out a complaint. I like the vlog but your not experiencing any of the places that you travel to and trying to talk about them in depth is ignorant. Your only goal is to complete a loop.

You're not wrong in that I don't have enough time to delve deeper into these places. I'm in less of a hurry and trying more than most you'll find here on YT (I think) the public dock there was blocked by another grounded sailboat if not mistaken. I stand by the notion that every water front town should have free day use parking for dinks. I do appreciate your constructive feedback. I also have thoughts on industry and industrial towns. Something has to create productive jobs to have any sort of economy. If it's tourism, at least provide a way for said tourists to get there and spend money??
