The math behind the rain water collection is astounding. such a small amount of rainfall comparatively but multiplied dramatically based on the square footage dedicated to collecting the runoff. Truly amazing when you stop to think about it. In my local municipality it's illegal to harvest rain water and the county also imposes a tax for "surface water management" meaning I get taxed for the rain water running outta my downspouts and into the sewer system. wtf? right?

We put in a 7500 gal (3 x 2500gal black tanks) rain harvest system for our home. The roof / collection is aprox 2000sq ft. We get about 1100gal / inch of rain. Our area get's 18inches of rain / year on average. Its 2 of us and we don't conserve at all and we go thru 2000-2500gal / month. Unfortunately, we don't get rain for 5 months during summer/fall but even so - we now go 8 months / year with no city water. The 'pump house system' is a simple pump -> pressure tank -> 25micron filter -> 5 micron filter -> Class A UV -> house water lines - perfectly safe/drinkable & city permitted/approved. We believe that in an emergency we could cut back (agree on toilet - major use) sufficient to go all year round. My message - its doable even in the city if you're interested in this topic! :)

At my off grid home here in New Mexico I have everything except my water collection unit in place. I have gotten probably one sixteenth of my unit up and in just one day of rain we collected over 180 gallons of water. So far I have 2700 gallon to fill. When I finish my gutters and collection drains I will be installing two more 5000 gallon tanks. I am very pleased with my progress. We have calculated that we can collect enough water to last from one monsoon season to the next. I am getting there.

I use an IBC tote, carried on my truck with a gas pump and 1" hose, for a fire suppression unit. Fills in about 30 minutes with a garden hose from my well. Wanted the poly plastic tank to not UV degrade, and also the sun not make algae in the tank. Painted it with primer and then latex exterior house paint by brush. After 2 years the paint is peeling off the top. Not much will stick to polyethylene, a cousin of teflon. Guess I'll just have to repaint it periodically...

Even with lumber framed residential homes storms roll through and damage peoples siding and shingles. You just get out there with a hammer and some nails and fix it. Plus routine maintenance like paint and caulk or replacing siding. Any house is on going repair and maintenance. Actually once you put the finish on the cobb you will probably have it easier than most. Glad your tanks got top off! Take care guys.

Please remember, there are buildings made from earthen materials from ancient times that still stand. They had no cement. Termite tunnels or funnels can be followed to there main house. You can crumble there spit funnels and slowly mix in water to where it makes a malleable paste. Cover the cob, this natural material makes cement and will smooth.

It is just a matter of catchment surface area. 1 square meter will collect 1 litre with 1mm of rainfall. We have 330 square meters of roof area and so get 330 litres per 1mm of rain. The 106,000 litre inground concrete tank was filled in 1995 and we have never got below 40% full since. looks like you have a good bit of catchment area with that long shelter roof. Measuring in metric makes it so much easier to calculate catchment, and therefore daily usage, provided you keep a daily raingauge chart and note the days when the tank overflows.

We've been dealing with kissing bugs ever since we moved to our adobe in 2003. For a few years we collected them for a chagas disease study at the University of Arizona. We learned that our kissing bugs do carry the parasite that causes chagas, however, for reasons not fully explained, the kissing bugs in our region do not defecate before leaving the bite site as they do in south America. Also, we started to rid pack rat nests around our home. This has greatly helped with the kissing bug intrusions into our home.

Have you thought of making a roof that is on the ground. dig down and create a collection cistern and grade the ground into a shallow slope. Then line with sheets of plastic and then carefully cover plastic with gravel or rocks. The rain would drain through the gravel and hit the plastic and hopefully slowly drain towards the cistern. or even a gutter half buried at the bottom of a slight slope and then when you know it will be raining spread out tarps on the slope and have the end draped into the half buried gutter then the gutter drains towards a cistern.

We water thru canals built during depression plus backup city water. It can get costly to run my brothers 10 acre vegetable farm which has 4 1/2 acres growing and 5 acre pasture for 4 angus 2 adults and 2 12 to 14 months old and 1 bull calf and 1 on the way in next couple days.
