I feel like you are probably a nice person but your attitude sometimes comes across as almost arrogance. Like it’s just ridiculous that you somehow think you are going to be a fully fledged wedding planner simply because you once helped some friends with some planning. The one thing that you actually made money from, the pressure washing, you wanted to give up because it was beneath you, imagine if you had just kept with it 5/6 videos ago, you’d probably be near breaking even, instead you put yourself a further 4/5k into debt.

in their defense, it might be the smartest move they've made this whole series, because it's a much easier job that's also much more likely to be profitable and also can actually bring in money. starts with ad revenue, then sponsors, then merch. so it wasn't a bad decision, it's just a bad time for that decision, after they spent MONTHS jumping from one business to the other and always quitting it and just digging themselves into a bigger and bigger financial hole. with the gaming channel, if they manage to take off, a couple sponsorships and the debt is gone

@@Ray_Vun I'm not sure you should count on your gaming channel getting big these days. Newcomers are kind of late to the party for a gaming channel. I suppose the couple dynamic can be cute so they kind of have that going? Also I wouldn't say it's an easier job. Being an entertainer is hard man. You try always being entertaining every day you stream and play games. Even when you're in 10k debt and stressed. And your banter and interaction with the watchers has to be funny and good. I'll be honest, I'd much rather being a standard boring office mouse, at least I don't have to wear a fake smile all day long.

Hello Jon, I've been watching the series from the start and I enjoy the new episode each sunday. I am a game developer myself and I want to give you some insights about this field. First of all game development is really hard, I know that you have a degree in computer science and that Kendra has experience with art and writing which would help a lot but still isn't quite enough to make a living out of (right away of course). Most indie game developers still have a main job from where all their income is coming from. Creating a game takes SO MUCH more time than you will probably think (a project that you think will take 2-3 months usually takes about 9-12 months) especially if you are dealing with a genre you want to create and that's the story game genre. There are so many little things you don't even consider that you'll need when developing it that it actually becomes overwhelming. It's not only programming, art, story writing, these are just the tip of the iceberg. For a full story game you need: good game design, level design, character design, prop design, concept art, story writing, music, fonts, ui, voice acting, animations, cutscenes, good cinematography, playtesting, bug fixing, saving systems, achievment system(if you are publishing on steam), optimising, etc etc. This is probably like 50% of all the things you will need and each one of them divides into subcategories (for example game design: mechanics, hook, balancing, etc). Also even if you make a game you are not bound to succeed, you will need a large community that would want to play your game. Acquiring that is harder than making the actual game. You will need a lot of wishlists and a large email list if you want your game to get played by someone. Creating story games as an indie is very risky because you need to first of all invest a lot of money into it (i am talking more than $5k) and second of all is the time to create it. Essentially to make indie dev your full time job you need to pump out games as much as possible to prevent bankruptcy if your game for some reason flops. To be able to live from game dev you need to publish games every 3-4 months (that is the perfect dev time imo) because taking any longer than that will reduce your yearly income. I don't believe that 3-4 months is enough to create a story game that you will be satisfied with. You probably heard the stories about people that have worked on a single game for several years and when they published it they became milioners. That has happened to someone but the chances of it are very very slim, you are not in a position to take any chances. So you probably shouldn't rely on the chance of creating a hit and being set for life. Also the reality is that you probably would make very little money with your first few games because simply enough they are not good enough (I know this sounds harsh but it's like that for everyone, for me as well). It will take a few years getting the experience you need to start creating games and actually living from it. I know all this sounded very monotone but it's just the reality of the field. I don't think you and Kendra should rely on the game development but rather do it as a side hobby at first to gain experience and focus on the powerwashing business or actually consider getting a job so you could get out of the debt and take your time to figure out your next moves. I really hope you see this because it took me a lot of time to write it lol. Cheers!

Thank you for that valuable insight. I think it's fair to say that solo development isn't really a thing, unless the solo developer is a literal wizard you're always going to need someone else you can hire for creating the assets you can't do yourself. But I think it's amazing that some people are able to more or less create a game solo. The main job you have, is that also in the IT field or close to where your skills as a developer lie? And have you made anything that I (should) know?

4:48 "I don't care for it. Its just a reason to make money". I think you're living in a fantasy mate. Most of us don't really care for the job we're doing but its a way to make money. I'm an IT networking specialist. I love my job but I'm not going to pretend my heart and soul is with every company I work for. Striving to do something you like and pays the bills is what you're aiming at. Also this should have been a wake-up call to not jump blindly into things.

Btw one interesting fact that I just calculated: The financial oversight at the end of this video says that all the cash in since day 1 = 15.579 pounds. the breakdown ends at day 237. So 15.579 / 237 = 65.73 pounds per day. Which is 65.73 / 8 = 8.21 pounds per hour. The minimum wage in the UK is 12.21. So the two of them together made less money since this series began than one person on minimum wage. Someone on minimum wage would have made 23.150,16 pounds in 237 days of working. It's maybe slightly unfair because this includes weekends but also not unfair because I think he's busy with his business ventures 7 days in the week.

yeah i have a feeling influencer culture has really tricked a lot of people into thinking that you gotta love your job. 99% of the world doesn't love their job, we don't even like our job, and most of us straight up hate our job. but there's bills to pay and mouths to feed. it'd be amazing if most people could work their dream job and wake up every morning excited to start work because of how much they love what they do. but that's not a possible reality

Game development is such a pipe dream. Everyone dreams of making games but like you said, it's very hard to break through as a solo dev. It takes a rare breed of solo game dev to break through and get a following that's salivating over your game. He should have really gotten in touch with other solo game devs to see their experience and an insight into their financials. Like how do they support themselves while they're developing? How long till the money gets in? What is even the expected payout? How do you cultivate a following?

Tha hardest part of growing is getting customers. Once someone contacts you the ball is in your court to make them happy and get them to keep coming back. They did the hard part with pressure washing. I'm not saying they were happy doing it. I'm sure not happy everyday when I'm covered in grease. I get my satisfaction from the customers being happy. Who cares if I installed a part or upgrade I disagree or I don't like. It's not about my enjoyment it's about theirs. Flat out they'll never be happy in a service business because their happiness is tied to the job, not the outcome and every job sucks. Im going to go ahead and unsubscribe. I wanted them to make it but at this point this feels less like a business and instead trying to get paid for a hobby.

The problem with this series is that you don't actually seem to need the money. I mean, you're not worried about the skyrocketing living costs, about the failed businesses. You're worried about "not doing something we like". I think this is the problem of your whole generation. Work is not for fun, otherwise it would be called *fun*. Work is to put bread on the table. To pay the bills. Once you manage that, you can start thinking about side hustles and hobbies. Putting *fun* into a job as a priority is the wrong approach.

John, I've been watching this series since day 1. It was really good to watch and see you excited about the project. The pressure washing was fantastic. Not only for content, but for your finances. The thing is, you didn't throw yourself fully into it. You felt it was beneath you and that you should be doing something less demanding. You said Kendra hadn't been working since this series started. Why didn't you have her helping you with the jobs? You had two pressure washers. Instead of selling one, you should have kept them both, built another tank and had you BOTH working on a single job. that would turn some of your 7-8 hour jobs into 3-4 hour jobs. Get back to pressure washing and change your perspective. I worked in hospitality for 8 years and I loved my job. Not because I enjoyed pouring pints and serving food to people, but for the experience I gave to my guests. The customer experience and their happiness is what drives service jobs. Turning to youtube to make video game content in an already extremely saturated space won't work well. You'll have some people come over to there from here but you won't have the kind of success you think you're gonna have. Starting a film/game studio is an insane idea and should be a dream, not your next business prospects. Do you have any idea what goes into making a video game? How hard it is? How much work you have to put in? It will take you literally years to develop a game that is meaningful enough to consumers to actually want to play it. Focus on the pressure washing. Show us your journey of turning that into an operation from a bin on the top of your car to a profitable business that affords you to employ people to do the heavy work.

The bright side is that you can take the skills you've learned and apply them to your new ventures. The bad part is that I don't see how you can apply that to video games. I would say go for the film making instead. There's already so many aspiring directors, I know a few that I've worked with in the past that are now in film school, I don't see the point in going for that role. I would suggest doing more of a supporting role like making the sets/props that the directors need for their films. That way, you can still be involved in the story telling aspect (taking others ideas and bringing them to life with your own interpretation) but have a lot more options and creative liberties. For gaming, I follow A TON of indie devs, I love keeping up with small devs/teams trying to make their own path in the gaming space. Making games is just extremely time consuming (so your idea of "passive"/automated income is already out the window there). The majority of the devs I follow have been working on their games for literal years on end and many are only on like version 0.5 or something similar aka maybe halfway done. You have the good devs that can finish games in roughly 2-3 years, get a good reception on release but after a few updates, they have to move onto their next project to keep their supporters on their Patreon interested. Then you have the other devs that make a really well liked game that's still in beta but never fully release it and keep adding very small updates once every few months to try and keep supporters on their Patreon and they just milk it for as long as they can. But the majority either abandon their games entirely or release it to such a small audience that theres no way that they can live off of it. Basically what I'm saying is that I genuinely think that if you want to create your own business/income, gaming is just a bad idea.

A lot of the comments here are really negative and while some are deserved, I really appreciate these videos. Great lessons for what works and what you shouldn't do when you're starting your own business. If you are going into game dev, I suggest making smaller, more focused games, and not to be too ambitious, especially with your first game. Something like Interactive movies in the vein of Her Story, Immortality, or short games like 12 Minutes and those Chilla's Art horror games (made by two brothers). Can't wait to see the games you make

Great to see you have the pressure washing to fall back on while you regroup for the next project. My personal view on wedding planning is that it is too important to people and you can therefore only get things wrong. For example DJ doesn’t show up, the couple will blame you for ruining their big day. High stress and couldn’t pay me any money to do it. To the haters, Jon and Kendra should list out all their skills through these projects and their eduction, would beat any CV of someone coming on here giving hate. Keep going guys!

How are you with a soldering iron? There's some money to be made in ornamental electronics - e.g. there's a company called Train Tracker that sells circuit boards with LEDs that show live train or weather maps, and they sell for a few hundred a pop, for what can't be too much in parts costs. I've thought about what it would take to make one, but it's a bit beyond my skill.

At this stage, with your growth on KZbin and social media, wouldn’t a marketing agency be an option? Hope the gaming works out, I think it’ll be a better fit than weddings or confetti at this stage, but I do wonder at how you make gaming work commercially for you given your circs?

When you were talking about how you love video and story and all that, i wanted to yell at the screen, bro just do youtube! You say that all the money you make goes back into the vids, so maybe try to get sponsors! Or post twice a week with one vid edited by yourself to save costs. I think people would be more interested in that and it fits all your criteria perfectly, especially the "unique" which the game/gaming channel does not. Just a thought mate 😉

Something new maybe, Path of Exile 2 is around the corner, maybe the new Dragon Age. I could also recommend something like Baldurs Gate 3, because it's very choice/story driven. Gothic/Risen series are some of my favourite games, older but Gothic 1 will get a remake so knowing the series might be good when it's coming out.
