ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: If you were able to provide me with the B&S model number off the motor i could provide you with a breakdown of the recoil to make things easier.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: The spring inside the housing has either broken or popped out of the tab that holds tension on it.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Right now the spring is just spinning in the housing.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: If you look closely at the underside you should be able see where the tab catches.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Hey, i see you are back, great.

ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Ok, i'm going to give you a link for the picture so we are on the same page as i explain things

ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: This is a 15 parts manual for your motor.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: open it up and go to page 3.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: The entire metal housing numbed in box 608 will need to be removed
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: You will have to copy and past the link into your browser.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: The tab that locks the spring in place is shown in with number 57.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: it fits into a small notch in the metal cover.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: More than likely that just popped out of the slot.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: If it is broken you will need to get a new spring.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: They never give a good pic of the inner working but i have done 100's of these.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Remove the center screw from the rewind pulley.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Pull the pulley out being careful not to have the spring explode on you.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Use a needle nose pliers to get the spring tab back in the housing slot so it will not spin anymore.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: When you put the pulley back in place there is a tab that must catch the inner portion of the spring, do no worry about tension at this point
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Once the pulley is screwed back in place you need to test by turning the pulley some to see if it snaps back each time.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Once you know that much is working you can start fixing the tension.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Take a needle nose pliers and pull the excess rope into the underside of the housing.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: By grabbing the rope and the pulley at the same time you can turn tension on the spring, make sure you have the rope go with you as you turn the pulley.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Give it about 3 rotations, let the rope back out and see if it pulls all of it back in.
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: If not repeat process until the entire rope is recoiled.
JustAnswer Customer: the screw is very tight, would this be clock or counterclock to remove?
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: it would be normal, counterclockwise to remove
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: Do all those instructions make sense to you?
ProjectDog: Small Engine Technician: If the tab is busted off the spring you can get a new generic one and any decent parts store.
