This is amazing, you are teaching us when a product is useful and when it isn't. Need more content like this. Actually demonstrating success and failure is top.

So, you came full circle back to what most of us started using to take these off? Just a big ol' water pump pliers... A 47acp or 49acp might do ok too.

The only thing about channel locks is that the lower jaw has a small range of motion, and you need to open up that spring clamp quite a long way sometimes. I have found that you can't get by with just a single tool. Usually, a rotating cup and notch tip ratcheting clamp tool works well, but I still need some bent-tip needle nose in small and large sizes as well as a cable actuated clamp tool to take care of all the situations. Bummer that that means I have to have 4 tools, but that's the way it goes....and STILL sometimes you can have a hell of a time getting access in there. Good luck everybody.

I've been turning wrenches for 25 years and the only time I've seen those skinny wire clamps have been on Detroit series 60 engines. The green ones are much more common. I think that you think the green ones are only on appliances, you're way far off, they're on everything.

Your right and for me on appliances I catch them from the side with a good needle nose

Need to remove a radiator hose clamp with no space for any pliers to access, Lisle hose clamp vise 44500 has a better luck for this situation.

How about just do away with pliers altogether simply grab two pieces of aluminum round stock a quarter inch in diameter by inch and a half to 2 inches long and drill a wire-sized hole in one end of each piece of round stock so that each piece becomes an extension of the ears on the hose clamp that you're trying to install. So you're basically making a quick release spring collar used on Fitness barbells out of a hose clamp. After installation, just pull off the pieces of round stock.

So, the Knipex 86 line (pliers wrench) could also possibly work if only its jaws were more rough or corrugated.

hey for $24 or so, you can get any one of several copies of the classic AST SCP2014 flat band hose clamp pliers on Amazon. Think of them as spring loaded slip joint pliers with different grooving and wider jaws. These and a cable operated pair of hose clamp pliers will handle most if not all flat band style hose clamps.

I agree! Knipex should come out with a smaller version of those pliers.

Knipex do a 6 inch version of the pliers wench with some sort of cross hatch pattern on the inside of the jaws. I think they call them the plastic clip removal tool or something like that. Still in the 83 series so easy enough to find online. I've been wanting one but the only thing holding me back is I don't like the thicker style of handles and that's the only one they come with. I guess I could cut them off and dip them but I'm not sure exactly what's under the plastic and I don't want to waste 50 bucks.

The idea is for someone who daily do specific work and needs tool for specific task, this channel goes over best options. If you once in a while work on your car car cooling system, it's pointless but if you do it almost every day, getting the best tool is a no brainer.

I am not buying specialized pliers. Been using Channellock for decades and they are good enough for snap clamps, and great for many other things. In fact when I used them to remove the snap clamps on my Toyota radiator hoses it never even occurred to me that I was being handicapped by them.

For those type of of spring style clamps, the ones you want are the waffle grid style ones. Lisle, CTA, etc... make those. They even have locking style ones. I don't know why ppl think twin grip style or regular pliers would work. The ones made by knipex and snapon are not worth it imo.

I always just use the old WILDE hose clamp pliers I have which have these rotating jaws, but I just happen to have them from my grandfather and they get the job done for me on the small ones I end up dealing with. If I didn't have those I'm not sure what I'd use , probably the Channellock 426 I have multiple pairs of I'd seek something proper out if the need was great enough.

The Snap On 47Cf Talon Grips have the same aggressive knurling at the tip as the Channellock. For occasional hose clamp needs it works well enough and the aggressive teeth work decently for a sideways grip.

Your not going to find a one type plier fits all for hose clamps. There are to many variables with style of clamp, size of clamp, and accessibility . You showed the worst style plier which is anything with a fixed pivot point creating a “V” when opening jaws. Cobras work well and twin grips on smaller clamps. Ratcheting cable style is a great idea but they always seem to come up 1 notch short.

@3:25, this is the exact problem I have with my twingrips. I tend to have to use hose clamps on 3/8" to 1/2" tubes and they can't hold on to the clamp. One minor bump by the tube causes one side to pop off.

I played with some HCP11 hose clamp pliers and could not get them to work properly. The locking mechanism made no sense to me and was completely unnatural to operate. And pressed steel at $78 seems rich even for Snap On.
