I really do hate when the fanboys say, “ you just don’t know how to set up the AF, you have the wrong settings “. Why do I need to dive deep into the menu and spend hours tweaking and experimenting on each setting? On my Canon, I put it in the mode I want and it works like 90% + of the time. I’ve never tweaked any AF setting on my canon r6
@apamacam48387 ай бұрын
Well said. When I was using the fuji, I've to constantly put myself on high alert mode when shooting important events such as wedding and baptism. Because in the past, my fuji lost focus on important moments. It was very easy on a6000 made me felt like I was cheating (after switching from dslr) before I switched to fuji and it is also very easy on the R6 and R6II that I'm using now. Never the need to deep dive into menu to change AF settings for different scenario. They just work.

Totally agree with this. I've recently come back to photography and trialed a few systems before ultimately going with an X-H2. I like the camera, I like their colour science, and I just preferred it over the others I trialled. However, the Sony A7iv straight out the packet pretty much had telepathic AF. I did nothing other than stick it in eye tracking. It dared me to try and unstick it. It just wouldn't let go. The Fuji on the other hand has two issues: 1. As expertly demonstrated here, even though the box says it's locked on the face/eye, when you review the shot it's actually focused somewhere/something totally different. 2. Sometimes halfway through tracking, and with no reason, it drops the face and the box moves to (try) and focus on something that is definitely not a face, eye, or anything vaguely similar! Sort it out Fuji. I way prefer your cameras to Sony, but your AF game definitely needs improving!

I have had xh2s since release and it’s always been totally shit for photos. Images are always super soft from missing critical focus. I only use Fuji for video now as the original xh2s firmware seemed to be ok for video but now they are just expensive paper weights. Was contemplating a gfx100ii/xt5 combo for weddings but not now. Also under the same heat conditions my xt3s will record allgood but the xh2s will overheat.
@thtbrian887 ай бұрын
I've felt the same way since I bought the XT5. I shoot a lot of weddings and couple sessions, and I realized that when objects move quickly, the result is a lot out of focus. I thought it was just a firmware issue, but after I updated it, it looks the same, no change I feel. I was surprised because the green box seemed to work fine on my camera's lcd. But the results after I checked on the computer were out of focus. Even when I took a picture where the object was not moving, it was still out of focus! Even though the green box looked in focus! After I watched this video, I was convinced to sell my XT5 as soon as possible.

I respectfully disagree with this. You can refer to Edvard's video comparing the AF between a 10 years old Sony a6000 against Fuji XH2s. Even thought a6000 wasn't perfect in every situation, it performed significantly better than the XH2s that has much newer and advanced processor. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWHYk2qmpN6EhqM With Fuji, it was never the hardware, it was always the AF algorithmn, or to be more precised, their coder.

At times the focus was like 5-10 cm behind. Can't firmware calculate the speed of subject and compensate for the delay it needs to capture frame? I've avoided the tracking mode since getting into Fuji because of all of that's been said on KZbin. Therefore, I've never really tested it haha, but I can understand why it would be annoying, particularly if you need the eye tracking to work reliably. I shoot mostly sports/action photography and videography since getting the X-T4 a year ago. I always use single point or zone in continuous mode for photos and the hit rate has been great. For video, i use multi mostly because for surfing using F8 or higher means the depth of field ensures i never really have a problem with the autofocus. If the subjects are closer it's probably 50/50 between area and multi, depending on the aperture and light and it's been fine for me. Overall, I think you're good if you use single point or zone with the relevant AF mode (at least with my camera anyway). It would be nice if Fuji's tracking could be reliable (especially if the other brands are continuing to improve fast), but when it comes to sports photography, most KZbin videos I've seen still recommend using the single point continuous anyway, even with a mirrorless Canon for example. Therefore, for my needs I'm really happy with it.

It's disheartening because Fuji is known to have AF issues and still haven't improved to some degree.

I've got a crazy setting for focusing on people on my X-H2 that works for me. 1. I always leave Subject Detection OFF, as if it didn't exist! 2. Focus mode: AF-C 3. Sutter AF > AF-C: OFF -> This disables focus when the shutter button is pressed halfway. 4. AF Mode: Spot, the biggest If the subject doesn't move much, or moves parallel to the camera, I use BBF (Back Button Focus) by pressing once with my thumb, releasing, recompose and shoot. It's like shooting AF-S in AF-C mode. But here is the trick. If the subject suddenly moves closer or further away from the camera, I aim the focus point at the person's face and keep the 'AF ON' button pressed for continuous AF while taking a shots. If the subject is moving very quickly, I do the same as above but change the AF mode to Zone (the big square). If a person is zigzagging towards the camera, which doesn't happen very often, I move the camera to keep the person in the centre of the frame! Often I can anticipate where in the frame I want to place the person, so I move the focus point to that area using the D-pad. With this setup, if a photo is out of focus, it's my fault, not the camera's.

Thank you (and Hilary) for your efforts, they are much appreciated by the community. These tests are some of the first tests I do (with my kids) when I try new cameras or lenses. I can confirm that with previous f/w iterations and favourable glass, an average hit rate of around 70-75% for z axis targets on the XH2S. Your findings here cement further evidence that the most recent f/w release from Fujifilm has SIGNIFICANTLY broken the AF reliability under a plethora of situations (regardless of lens used). XH2S at 6.00, XH2 at 4.0 and XT5 at 3.01 are all suffering consistent reported AF failings. It's one thing for Fuji to balls up momentarily, it's quite another to stay quiet on the matter, allow more users to 'upgrade' their cameras and further nuke their tech. Mostly like to do street and environmental portraits for hobby, but also use it for taking shots of my toddlers. I really love the tactile aspect of Fuji cameras, it feels much more engaging than when I was using other brands back in the days. I personally haven’t had much issue with hit rates (even with my kids running around), but I’m also not doing that long of a continuous auto focus shots. I just go for the eye detect with short bursts if they are stationary, or AFC with lower Aperture (say F2.8 vs. 1.4) with face detect if they are running around. But yes, I don’t rely on it if AF accuracy and dependability is a priority, which is what I desire when shooting video. For that, I’ve been using the Sony ZV-E1, and it’s been a great addition. I also use Leica M6 and MP for shooting film when I really want to slow things down and also long for that genuine film look. I think at the end of the day, it’s a function of what your use case is, and finding the most suitable gear for it.

I absolutely love so much about Fuji cameras: their glass, the tactile feel, the colors including the log video, but I don't want to be a beta tester for their terrible firmware, and their video image stabilization is the worst in the industry and so is their autofocus. Still subjects? Great, no problems. But it's not feasible to use for sports, wildlife, pets, even pictures of your kids. And vlogging or FPV video? Need a gimbal. I very sadly left them for Lumix/Canon and was re-evaluating now a few years later, but nothing has changed. Now Lumix has Real Time LUTs, Canon has custom picture profiles that are basically LUTs, and even Sony has Picture Profiles which are much less user-friendly and a bit less flexible, but all three can get a certain "Film Sim" look SOOC. I actually have a custom Classic Neg look for JPEGs on both my Canon and Lumix cameras and it's awesome when I just want something nice and easy SOOC. And I get great image stabilization, autofocus, modern user interface, etc.

It seems gets into balancing internal camera resources which they can only fix. I almost think it’s something like the resources/footprint of running that great looking back display is leeching resources from the AF. Probably something where Fujifilm would have to decide to take a different PR hit drop the resolution the back display or elsewhere to allocate adequate resources/memory to the AF. It just seems like the cameras that are good at AF have less than stellar back displays, but it’s just a guess on my part.

@Iamtongue now that just ain't Christian. I do wedding photography and when I started I was taught to shoot a hybrid form of af and mf and honestly for something like events it works way better. When dealing with large groups of people the camera doesn't know what you actually want in focus in your composition. My focus point might be in the center when I want a person on the right of the frame. Changing the focus point wastes time and moving the camera so that the person aligns with the focus point changes your composition. But doing a light turn of the focus ring on the lens gets you the shot. Full auto isn't always the right tool for the job but it does seem like fuji auto needs to step it's game up.

Great video. And now, on 4th October 2024, even after the awful Ver 4.00, we are STILL waiting for a working AF for stills. An announcement today from Fuji says they hope to release an update in November but at first it was only for the X-H2, X-H2S and GFX and ONLY for video. Then a couple of hours later that pinned an additional message - "Dear Customers, Thank you for your feedback and comments on our AF system performance. We've been working on X-T5, X-S20 and other models as well, to release the firmware within this year for improved user experience. We will communicate the details as soon as we have more information. My feeling with autofocus does not change after your video. I bought the x-t5 knowing that the af is not at same level of other main brands, because it is more important for me the ergonomics, size, and lower cost of lenses w.r.t. the af in sport photography. But yes, an improvement would be very appreciated, given that according to the results of your tests (ear often in focus) the prediction of focus point seems to be the real problem.

Please tell me did you test with Release/Focus Priority set to Focus or Release? I can not comment on your experience, but I have mine set to focus, and as per Fuji - Focus is prioritized over shutter response. Pictures can be only taken when the camera is in focus. I recreated the test with an X-T5 and got a hit rate higher than you around 80% , however this is not a shooting mode I use . I use AFC (but only when a subject is moving) but in single shot never CH or CL as I don't need 30 photos of the same thing (and I'm never in a position where I can not just retake it). But yes Fuji have work to do to catch up with everyone else, but I am not swapping the fuji colours for 120FPS all in focus but clinical looking photos. Trick is to know the limitations of your tools, and if AFC and CH shooting is important, the best fuji has is the X-H2s but you then lose resolution... What I would say that Fuji is much better at tracking people when the eye is clear and wide open (not great with glasses on if eyes are squinting e.g. sun in them) I quite often put the focus point on the eye if the camera is having an issue. You are right though, it is always when the subject is small the camera struggles hit rate is near 100% when the subject is more in frame (closer to camera)

The canon r6ii is alien technology compares to the fuji autofocus system. One thing I like about fuji is that their camera and lens value does not go down much in value and selling is so easy. My xt3 with the 33 1.4 is actually a lot better and more accurate than the xh2. Slower af tracking, yes but the the accuracy is actually there and i am talking about af-c. Those fuji fanboys that say “just use af-s”, i might as well use my old 5dii. I paid a premium, i expect a premium experience. Fuji colors are freakin great but damn full frame cameras even at way lower megapixels resolve a lot better. Fuji with their crop is already at a disadvantage, add they crap af, oh boy. Those x100vi users have better photos of their camera than actual photos of their shots.

Thanks for calling out Fuji! I think you should do another video showcasing the most trivial AF-S focusing fails on stationary objects using a wide angle lens in contrasty light. The focus will jump around by repeatedly pressing the focus button, showing that getting critical focus is a game of luck in that case. To showcase that you can turn the distance scale on in the EVF. This is one of the main issues, that still too few people have noticed, but is definitely mentioned here and there in forums. For simple everyday shots this is the main cause for soft images. So: AF-S, stationary object/scene, sunlight, focus box size does not matter. The wider the lens the worse it seems. I haven’t tested anything longer than 35mm… check it out yourself🙏🏼
