🥔 Welcome to the life of a Canadian potato farmer! While farming potatoes is incredibly rewarding, it comes with its fair share of challenges. The quality of potato seed is crucial-it sets the foundation for your entire crop. A bad seed can mean a bad crop and, ultimately, a bad year. Ideally, we'd all use drop seed for perfect sizing, but that's not an option where I live in Canada.
🌱 Join me as I navigate the ups and downs of potato farming. From selecting the right seeds to battling the unpredictable weather, I share all the nitty-gritty details of farm life. Don't forget to check out my Instagram for more behind-the-scenes footage and daily updates from the field!

@@PotatoTyy how? With a quick application of synthetic fertilizers, a bit of plowing, and a spritz of glyphosate, you've successfully transformed your once vibrant soil field into a barren patch of dirt! Congratulations on becoming ensnared in the grip of large agricultural NGOs. But wait, before you celebrate, consider the long-term consequences of this approach. By relying on these conventional farming methods, you're inadvertently depleting the natural fertility of your soil, disrupting its delicate ecosystem, and contributing to the cycle of dependency on costly inputs. Instead of embracing regenerative practices that nourish the soil, enhance biodiversity, and promote sustainability, you've succumbed to the allure of short-term gains at the expense of long-term viability. It's time to break free from this destructive cycle and explore alternative approaches that prioritize the health of the land and the well-being of future generations.

I'm so confused, as a Scottish seed potato grower, can you in America not buy your potatoes at seed size? Sure it costs a bit more than ware size, but our seed isn't even allowed damage on it when we sell it to avoid infecting the potato, to see people cutting potatoes before they plant them is diabolical.

@@user-ul1xq2db4f A cheap plastic sack will do. So will the empty cavity of your enemy's ribcage. So will a discarded kitchen sink. Any medium that holds soil will work for potatoes. They don't have to be fancy. You can look up vids on KZbin. There's plenty. You should also layer the potatoes instead of just shoving them into dirt. Start with just the right amount of dirt, put in your cut taters, eyes side up, and when greens start to peek out, cover them with a layer of soil.

@@WHYRCatsSolntoButtholespotatoes are the easiest to start with if you're new to gardening. They can survive almost anything. You can buy a potato at the store, let it sit out until the eyes start growing little sprouts, and plant it.

I initially totally thought your comment was in jest. Because I see these potatoes soled in stores in the plastic bags, and if you just let them sit, especially anywhere near light, they just start growing themselves, like the dandelion of food plants.

We produce so many "seedless" fruit and vegetable varieties that if our technologies were nuked or destroyed with a cme, we would be in deep doodoo with food production, medicine production, and darn near everything. The sad thing is that we do it because humans find a few seeds "inconvenient" or "unappealing". Bruh...we're producing food that can't produce more food due to "convenience" and it's insane.

Gardening and farming is always fun to learn about 😄 maybe not 40 acres at the moment, but maybe you can start with one plant in a grow bag like some delicious patio/bush tomatoes. Sungolds or currant tomatoes could be fun. There are even dwarf/micro style of tomatoes that you can grow completely indoors. Also, for some fun learning, look into the milpa farming method used by the Mayans long ago, and you can think about using those methods on your beautiful 40 acre homestead 😄 Cheers!

@@xaviercruz4763 The micros that I've had a fun time growing are the "yellow pygmy micro dwarf tomato", and the "moment micro dwarf tomato". I don't actually know if there are perennial micros, but they're so easy to grow while taking up so little space, that it isn't an issue if you only get them as an annual. I've got my usual harvesting tomatoes outside in their beds, so these micros have just been more of a fun gardening project after a friend gifted me a few seed packs.

You don't need much of the potato to plant. Only the eyes & a small slice of potato & skin that the eye is attached to & growing out of. Cut the section, dry it out 1 or 2 days, & then plant it. They grow amazingly fast & spread out. They will be ground vines with white flowers on the vines. The potatoes will be growing underground.

As a farmer I'm puzzled why your seed growers send you oversized potatoes. I know our local seed potato growers only sell the potatoes of a certain size, similar to your "Drop" seed and anything oversized goes to other markets. I'm guessing the variable size seed potoes are a bit cheaper than the uniform size as your taking all the viable potatoes. I've never heard of a potato cutting machine but generally it's all seed potatoes in my part of Scotland. Greetings from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Ps, I really enjoy your channel 👍
