In order to renovate this old stone barn into our home, we must insulate the ceiling. We take a different approach in order to DIY this renovation, but in the end we will cover the insulation with wood paneling and beams similar to what was before.

Replace the moldy insulation! We had a very minor leak and the insulation became moldy AND SPREAD! You will save your family from illness from it if you replace them now! I am a retired nurse and Physician Assistant and would caution against leaving them in place as they are. Like the other response said, ask for a partial refund for them. Or not.

Absolutely replace the moldy insulation!!! You cannot kill mold. Fb has millions of people that are sick from mold in their homes. Mold is now a health crisis in the USA. Kristina Baehr on utube & her husband & her 4 children were very ill from mycotoxins that are produced from mold that cause a variety of issues including neurological. She had a beautiful newly built beautiful home worth millions. She is an attorney that now fights for families that have lost all their belongings & Health to mold & other environmental toxins. Great job on the house guy’s it is going to be beautiful. Hope Heather feels better she is such a beautiful person🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s

Chlorine kills mould spores but they are in the air constantly and will return. Most people use bleach which bleaches the colour from the mould but does not kill the spores. I live in Cornwall in the UK and mould is a constant problem due to the high atmospheric humidity. A domestic Mould and Mildew spray containing Chlorine will keep on top of the problem. Landlords tend to try and mask the problem with dehumidifiers and opening windows, yes, that is one part of controlling the problem but a spray or solution of Chlorine is another part of it. It is harmful to pets and people and must be used with utmost caution.

@@angelikamessenger1237 that makes micotoxins explode it does not kill mold. You can only kill mold on stainless steel and glass with hydrogen peroxide or vinager. immediately after winter and B4 spring (an annual task in central Calif.), i wash the mold off my high gloss painted bathroon walls with 1/2 cup bleach and 1 tablespoon of powder laundry detergeant (Tide) in 1 &1/2 gallons of warm water. Presto! Clean and good as new. Thus, yes, replace the insulation. Then, Bradey, scrub the infected mold clean, and let dry. You can reuse the clean insulation for the floor.

With the air gap behind the foam board, you will need venting to allow moisture out. The foam board acts as a vapor barrier with the gap trapping moisture and thus will form mold on the roof side.

I would completely replace them & NOT use any as gap filler. Not even after treating them. Fungi has a way of morphing to stay alive! Nature always wins! After you cover it up- You will just never know (unless you can visually inspect it) if the mold truly did stop growing. Just don't use it. It's not worth the risk.

I'm doing similar insulation in my heated barn. But leaving a ¾" air gap above for air to flow from the eaves through the gap to the ridge vent. IMPORTANT: Apply a sealed moisture barrier between the heated room air and the foam and roof joists. Warm air holds lots of water, cold air doesnt ... warm air will constantly convect across cold surfaces and dump its moisture there as contact with the cold surface cools the air, soaking joists all winter long. Your ceiling is a winter-long room dehumidifier if you let moisture get past your moisture barrier to where the temperature is at the dew point.

Did you have an engineer plan this for you? Polystyrene is not an ideal material for this type of situation, The roof is made out of wood and thus moves over time due to moisture changes. This causes gaps between the insulation and the wood (in addition to the gaps that occur due to unprecise cutting) as well as maybe nasty screeching sounds. The gaps have zero insulation value and also enable convection, meaning moist, warm air can protrude to the cold wood behind the insulation and cause condensation/mould. These things need to be planned carefully which includes all details such as cable protrusions, transitions to other parts of the building, vapor barriers etc.

We use sheep's wool insulation in our granary garden room which is built from green oak, it is super efficient and eco friendly but agree wood fibre insulation is also very effective and eco-friendly and provides fire protection which foam insulation does not. After the Grenfell Tower catastrophe where poorly fitted external foam insulation was cited as a major factor in accelerating the fire I feel it's not safe to use.

Consider hardwired power strips for under top cabinets in kitchen. Eliminates plug-ins spread all over backsplash. More attractive and easier tiling area. Helps with conduit channels too. Have outlets where you need them.

By the time I have seen this video it is certainly too late but I would strongly discourage you from putting numerous can lights in a sloped ceiling. These lights will shine into your eyes in various spots in the room and be most uncomfortable, even with lenses on them. The ceiling ambient lighting should only be to light the room so you can see or to call attention to a feature by a directed light, but not light that your eyeballs can meet up with. Canned lights are terribly overused and used poorly by most builders. I have experience in lighting design and so I would reccommend you use the canned ceiling lights very sparingly and carefully. If the ceiling is going to be lovely enough to highlight, put lights at the lower edges of the ceiling that shine up, not down. Or you could put some low level cans at the place where the ceiling meets the wall and wash the wall. Again, the light does not shine into eyes. Sconces next to the windows would be nice and the lighting would be more intimate. Then for task lighting you have more strategically placed lamps and pendants. Do not flood your room with light, I beg you. Even dimmers will not help.

Très bonne réflexion. Ces éclairages sont souvent très mal utilisés. 😊

Thank you! I really hate what people are doing with grids of recessed these days. Ughh! To your comment, "I beg you," LOL! I agree completely!

Ditch the moldy panels. The insulation material may not be able to 'mold', but if these were exposed, a lot of organic garbage, dusy, pollen, etc gets deposited. And then wet? Yes that is mold. In no way worth the risk. Mold killer may 'affect' them, but it will still be there in small pores, and will recur. Behind your finish-ceiling. You don't want to have to remove that when the kids get sick. Fix them now. Best of luck!!

WOW! You did so much work on this stone house/barn and covering Up all the interior, stone walls, insulating over the beautiful wooden ceiling and chiseled beams. It would of been better to have left it as a barn and bought an 8 room modular home already built. Well, anyway, much success! I respect your choice. God bless

I find your wording interesting when you talk about government regulations requiring home insulation. Is it really such a bad thing to insulate your home to save energy and our resources? While Western Europe isn't perfect, I think some Americans could benefit from considering these so-called "burdensome regulations." It's worth remembering that our planet's resources are finite. As inhabitants of the European Alps, we experience the effects of climate change daily. This is largely due to pollution from industrialized nations, including but not limited to North America, that often seem to use resources as if there's no tomorrow. It's important for all of us to think about future generations. Environmental regulations, when done right, can be a positive step forward.
