Can't believe how crazy there's still fear about these amazing animals! AND how important they are to ecosystems. I remember seeing a documentary about the Dutcher Wolves reintroduction to Yellowstone, how ranchers were educated to deal with them and not just shoot them. Over time they brought back wetlands that were decimated by elk over grazing, since elk had no preditors their population exploded. When the wolves came back, they put things back into balance. Now streams, beavers, wetland birds are returning. We as humans need to respect the delicate balance of nature.

Sorry -- 4 months after the fact, but thank you for sharing! I think most educated people now-days have revised their fairy tale fear of wolves. It's more commonly an issue of ranchers using State and private wolf assassins to eliminate "conflicts" with livestock rather than using less lethal methods to protect their cattle, and also with "recreational" predator trophy hunters...or hunters wanting to decrease the competition for elk & deer. Sometimes entire packs are exterminated and/or wolf cub dens targeted. (Probably drought and fires have also contributed to displacement.) For this to change, citizens must self educate, get involved civically to influence regulators to establish or maintain protections, and press for enforcement of reg's. If not, nothing changes, because trust me, any attempts at protection will be fought by the powerful ranchers and huntsman coalitions.😐😤 By the way, I'm interested in the doc'y you mentioned. Do you remember who produced it and when? (Thanks!)

What in the hell are spouting off about. Your post is based on pure emotion. Nature doesn’t go out of balance just because a species is no longer. Animals go extinct all the time and yet here we are still making do with what humans have. We are created in God’s image. Animals are not. Nothing else is made in his image but humans. The ecosystem is not some delicate pussified entity. It is all held together by the one true creator. We have dominion over all creatures. If it benefits us to kill wolves for our livelihood, then God tells us we have that right. Only God gives Rights. Not the government, not other humans, and definitely not animals.

It's easier and cheaper to just shoot Wolves than invest in fencing to protect livestock, sadly.
@user-yj3nu5gr9p9 ай бұрын
@@danielward7008 Sure, but it's also not as simple as investing in fencing in the first place. Fences are useful for keeping livestock in mostly, not so useful for keeping animals out. Wolves are good jumpers, good diggers, and persistent when they're hungry. Worse than coyotes or foxes because they can cause a lot more damage. Makes more logistical sense to skip surrounding a few acres with fence that won't really keep them out too well and just shoot them instead.

Thank you James, for bringing focus to this issue. Here in WA, wolf advocacy groups like Washington Wildlife First and Northwest Animal Rights Network are petitioning the WA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife to "say no" to an upcoming de-listing of WA grey wolves from "Endangered Status" (re Endangered Species Act) simply because NW wolf population has barely risen from the brink of extinction in the last few decades (as a result of receiving protected status). We all know the bloodbath that down-listing will set off!

When I lived in AK some wanted to have State Fish & Wildlife employees shoot wolves from aircraft to increase moose available to meat hunters, using tax dollars for ammo, fuel, salaries & benefits for the hunters. Early 1990s. They got shouted down. Bears eat more calves than wolves, but no one advocated thinning bear populations. I believe bears had an advantage for hunting salmon in season where tourists could count on watching them. Trains killed (likely still do) more adult moose than all wild predators combined, so my friends & I started saying "Open aerial hunting on the Alaska Railroad!" Not sure that would be a good actual activism campaign.

I think the fact that BOTH of these wolves lean in for kisses says a LOT about how closely related to dogs they are - AND how sweet they are. If people want a self-interest reason to preserve wolves in the wild, they should think about the results of overpopulation of prey animals. When any population gets too large, disease often restores the balance, and that disease might be transmitted to humans (such as Lyme’s disease).
