@@johnsilverman9546your comment is dripping in racism, not in having sympathy for the hostages but in your lack of sympathy for all 2 million Palestinian hostages in Gaza and the thousands in Israeli prisons not charged with anything. @tariqkhonji6556 Your reply actually drips with racism by holding Hamasniks to a lower standard of conduct -- which implies that you see them as lower than Israelis. Moreover, your bogus racism charge regarding my comment fails to recognize that there is essentially no race difference between Gazans and Israelis because many Gazans are descendants from Mizrahi Jews who were forced to convert by Islamic invaders from the Arabian peninsula.

I am happy to see a Jewish person with the same views I have. It is so ironic to me that Israel was created for Jews to feel safe after the holocaust but Israel instead morphed into treating Palestinians as cruelly as they were treated. And they are self-righteous when confronted with it. Jews have never been safe in Israel. Israel is the problem. I really despise the consistent self-righteousness of Israelis. I want freedom and dignity for Palestinians. And ideally, no "Jewish state." Conceptually, it is just wrong.
@llm7013
@llm7013 6 ай бұрын
I agree that its conception was wrong. It was a way, maybe even a cruel trick, to promote and support the dislocation of the European "Jewish problem" from Europe to the Middle East. But when people have lived on a land for so long, as have similarly the European, and the African, the Chinese, and other inhabitants brought by the Europeans to toil its soil or build its railway lines, on the land that we call the United States, it is not a rational solution to create a second displacement to correct the first. I believe that the parallel between the creations of Israel and the United States is the elephant in the room. American leaders have been slow to criticize Israel because its genesis is in many ways similar to the genesis of the United States. They were both founded in part on the search for existential and religious freedom for some and fueled by the colonial and capitalist drives of others. You can't seriously question Israel's right to exist without seriously examining the US origin story, history and its right to exist. Peter and those who have been advocating for a bi-national one-state solution ever since Israel began construction of the apartheid wall separating the West Bank from Israel, separating Palestinian farmers from their land, expropriaiting land from Palestinians and expulsing them from their homes, and reducing the West Bank to a Swiss cheese-like territory, are spot on.

Appreciate this conversation Katie and Peter. As a Palestinian, I believe there can only be long term peace and security via a secular, one state solution that gives everyone equal rights and citizenship. It must also include the right of return for all Palestinians and their descendants expelled from their homeland since 1948.

For me personally , it is heartening to hear a Jewish journalist like you recognize that Palestinians are human and do exist ,have a history ,and a claim to their land of many generations. I have lived long enough to remember when Israeli leader lifers like Golda Meir who kept saying “ there are no Palestinians ,only Arabs”. We have come a long way but not one enough . Israel just displaced 1,000,000+. fairs fair Balfour proposed (1917) the Jews in Europe a homeland to get them on side against Germany. After WW11 the homeland was realized. Peter. The absolute best take on the situation. Agree 100% Thank you 🙏🏻. (And the fact that it’s on Katie Curic somehow makes it more easy to perhaps share to people who might otherwise not want to hear a Norman Finkelstein 😦 lol)

@8:30 If he is arguing that there is absolutely no reason for oppressed people to violently fight back, then I guess he is vehemently opposed to all his Jewish ancestors who fought in The Resistance against the Nazis and used tactics such as spying, violence and murder. I suppose there was absolutely no justification for those ancestor's actions -- they just should have non-violently engaged in civil disobedience to protest their treatment, according to him.

Growing up in South Africa and traveling back and forth to Israel with his dad, for such a clearly observant person I wonder why it took Peter this long for a shift in thinking and the recognition of a similar oppression.

Sometimes people have to grow up and get away from the influence of their elders -- parents, grandparents etc. and he was smart to go talk to Palestinian people.

It's called hypocrisy. In his Zionist teachings, "never again" is only for ppl of his background and not anyone else. The Palestinians are just one group that the Yt Jews of Israel have oppressed. Don't forget the Black Jews, Bedouins, Christians, ...basically anyone who is not them. In 2013 it was finally reported on how Israel was surreptitiously giving Black Jews drugs that made it so they couldn't procreate because Israel didn't want them to increase in number. It took until 2019 for Israel to admit to doing this. Prior to, they were claiming that the reports were antisemitic -- I know, what a shocker!!! Yeah... and sounds familiar right?!? Sounds like something that happened to them by the Nazis. That's "never again" for ya!!!

The conflict has raised many ethical questions of diverse nature as it leaves many of its critics in a state of limbo. When hate and intolerance transcend to the level of savagery and bloodlust we must garner our true humanity to prevent that from becoming life's terminal event on this planet.

For me it simply has to do with how trapped the Palestinian people are in Gaza and the one-half children population; it could never excuse what Hamas did to the essentially peaceful kibbutz community citizens. Israel can make thousands of excuses and justification about how the Palestinians should cope with piecemeal loss of the land they originally felt they deserved but, were I a Palestinian I believe I would feel they way they do. I am ashamed if the U.S. has made the situation far worse but I know having Israel as a democracy in the Middle East as an ally was key to the U.S.. I cannot ever forgive what the settlers are doing driving Palestinians off their land as they assume they have the right to drive the Palestinians off.

Peter Beinart you’re amazing for acknowledging both sides because at the end of the day we’re both human and both want to thrive in peace and prosperity. Unequal rights is a recipe for disaster. I also want to point out that America’s unconditional support of Iz government rewards both good and bad policies the same. So what incentive is there to change.

Certainly terrible for the Israeli victims on 7-10-23 but why was there not a similar outpouring in response to the horrors ISIS Inflicted upon the Syrians. Was that not also a terrible occurrence that went on for years?
