I bought the 2.4in inlet 'Gen 1' version of this exact turbo secondhand about a year ago. Had it rebuilt by a reputable builder. Been hoarding parts to add it to my car in the next year or so. Thank you guys so much for sharing what these turbos are capable of! You can really get lost in the sea (literally smh, IYKYK) of stock location, hybrid, big turbo options for the EJ platform. Most of them don't give much differing spec info, other than lb/min or what size the exducer may measure out to be, etc etc. You're always wondering what the peak output is, and the power band can be a complete question mark. NOT TO MENTION - everybody usually just copycats everyone else and gets the same turbo as the next guy. Just seeing that this can hit just over 500whp/tq on a dyno without some crazy ass setup is amazing. Shout out to MotoiQ for making this video for the Boxer boys! 🙏🏾✊🏾🤙🏾

FP Green, grimmspeed TMIC, (all supporting mods) stock locations.. 425whp on a hub dyno, 400lb torque, absolutely no issues at all. I could with ease toss a bigger turbo in (fp black) and push up to 500 and still be well inside the stock location/TMIC's capabilities.

A huge reason that people go rotated is the so that they aren’t limited by the turbo inlet going under the manifold and the limitation of the turbine housing AR. Sure you made 500 ftlbs but it fell all the way to 320 by 7600. With a bigger AR you can keep that torque up for way longer. With that being said, It all depends on what kind of build you’re going for. This is still a badass build for sure
@motoiq
@motoiq Жыл бұрын
This turbo combination makes more power and more area under the curve than most equivalent-sized rotated mount turbos that we have tested which frankly surprised us. The turbo also made the power with relatively little boost, only 18 psi at high rpm. We think the tiny filter of the CARB legal Cobb airbox choked out a lot of power as well. For going for any more power than this, rotated mount is the way to go for sure but even this power level is approaching the end of the sweet spot for these engines when it comes to durability.

Amazing in depth video again! Suggestion for a video going over Subaru’s stock piston material and going over ringland failure how the stock pistons are cast hypereutectic aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) alloy and the percentage of silicon in Subaru pistons vs other manufacturers that also use this material and how much of an advantage well made forged pistons (and rods) are.
@motoiq
@motoiq Жыл бұрын
Hypereutectic alloys have more silicon than the saturation limit of aluminum in solid solution which is typically 16-18 percent. The other problem is the Subaru has a really high first ring land for emissions reasons, combine the two and you have a fragile piston.

Favorite thing about the pre 2006 STI's is the 35:65 powersplit, everything 2006 and forward understeers more. We could have also gotten the EJ207 with twinscroll from factory like japan but emissions.
@wt8213
@wt8213 Жыл бұрын
Not getting the EJ207 had nothing to do with emissions. Subarus assumed the US market wanted more torque so they developed the 257. With longer gearing. I've driven JDM EJ207 sti cars in Canada. They aren't suited for long north American roads. The gear ratios on those cars are tighter. (Not fun on the highway). The 207 needs to be rev'd out to feel the power. The low end torque on the 257 is definitely noticable.
@CornFedZ06

A lot of people don't know that about the center diff in the GD's. In 2006 they added a mechanical lsd component to the center diff. If you need a fun primer on boosted engines, I would suggest reading "The Secret Horsepower Race" by Calum E. Douglas: it follows the engineering race between the Allies and the Axis on the Western Front from the late 1930's to the end of WW2. A lot of what we now take for obvious in boosted engines was developed in those years at massive expense and record time. Some things, like throttle bodies water/methanol injection or compressor entry fuel injection at high boost have yet to reach the point aero piston engines were at when jets took over. It helped me get some of the the details of Kojima's teachings.

Upgraded axles, ver7 JDM 6spd, BBK up front with brembos in year. Miss that thing. The one thing people kept saying was to get a roted set up and FMIC. I hated both those "upgrades". Made the street drivabily unbearable with lag. Shit, I was running the stock air box at 350whp. FP zero will do 700whp stock location, but Its next to impossible to have the turbo inlet pipe under anything other than an ams manifold, a lot of people end up running screens. Rotated has better turbo options, its a crap ton easier to work on the engine in the long run, and you don't have to crush down the inlet under a manifold restricting flow. So yes you can make power with the stock locations, its just a shit ton easier long term to do with a rotated setup.

@motoiq

I think the PTE will make more peak power but a rotated mount 7163 will spool faster. It's a really good turbo for a Subaru. We are building a car now with just that combo.

Is this the 55mm turbo? How do you think the 58mm precision would compare on a streetcar?

The 55mm made 500 even and the power fell off like a rock past 5800 rpm. The 58mm made 517 and pulled hard to 7700 and didnt make much more noticeable lag.

@ararson4710
@ararson4710 Жыл бұрын
@MotorSwapDan Yes, the vf48 and vf52 have the same specs , even the exhaust side and intake. The only difference is that the angle of the intake housing is also the boost line. The vf48 holds more boost at mid to high rpm. The vf52 holds up to 5000 rpm and then trappers off.

Not as necessary in a left hand drive car. Right hand drive cars have the steering column brake servo and clutch master cylinder close to the turbo so a rotated set up is a better option for room.

Very nice video :) The "it feels like it has lag but on the dyno it's making good power by 4000rpm" sounds like the general impression I've always had from Precision turbos versus some other brands. It's like they dyno well, and have a solid boost threshold if you give them enough time to build the boost - but the transient response (time to reach the boost it CAN make at whatever given rpm) seem to be lazier than other things that may make similar power. Almost like the dead opposite of what Borg Warner EFR turbos are like, where the dyno plots don't really set the world on fire - but driving them and the advantage to low inertia wheels etc start making sense.
@motoiq

It's typical Subaru turbo far from the exhaust ports and long intake tract lag. For a Subaru its pretty responsive.

@@motoiq Ah yeah there is that too haha. Often wondered how hard and how much different a pair of smaller divided housing turbos on an EJ would be like - one cylinder per scroll to attempt to negate bad pulse collisions etc.
@motoiq
@motoiq Жыл бұрын
Typically twin turbos on a 4 cylinder are not as efficient. Subaru tried them for a while then scrapped that. Twin scrolls work good. However even with a twin scroll the turbo placement would be less than ideal on an EJ. Our twin scroll stroker long rod 205 is almost ready to tune. One thing I would like to try on someone else car is the Killer B low mount turbo kit.
@misterlith
@misterlith Жыл бұрын
@@motoiq yeah funny you say that, I agree twins generally don't make sense on a 4cyl and divided housings less relevant on an EJ because a lot of the point of divided housings is the reduced volume so they build drive pressure quick and also clear quick so you kinda get sharp response without necessarily ending up with ridiculous EMAP. With an EJ you can't have the short runners that are kinda needed to make it work. Same with twins on an inline 4 don't make sense because you need bigger volume manifolds and plumbing which defeats the purpose of twins, where you end up neatly packaging the turbos close to the head and you are making much better use of the exhaust energy (so V6s are basically build for this). My thought was a boxer actually is probably a lot better suited to twins if you divide the pulses than any other 4cyl because things are quite quite different to the rules you'd follow with other 4s as they are a bit more like a V6 config in that regard, aside from the pulse events being uneven which is why I threw the divided housing idea in there

An 83 is a good match for a street car. You might want to try one of the newer G series turbos, those rip with faster spool. The 3076 is sort of a slow spooling turbo, a G series in a rotated mount will be super awesome!

The BW is a great turbo but it isnt a direct drop in. I wanted to try the Precision out. I also wanted it to look sort of stock because my daughter has been pulled over by cops before and hassled. Then I put on the Process West intake manifold to test it and there went the stock look. I might sand off the milling marks and paint it the OEM wrinkle red later.
