HI guys, Tampa here. Liked all the comments. I prefer the smaller ships, because I don't think I could deal with 6K pax. and don't need all the toys for kids on board. I understand the bigger the ship the bigger the money maker for the lines. My preference is just relax and count the waves as they go by me. See you next time.

We went on the Star last year on a 14 day cruise from South America to Antarctica. We agree that there was a lack of public areas inside. There were several cold days and bad weather and there weren’t many areas to take in the scenery. We are cruising on the Bliss tomorrow and are really looking forward to it!

Excellent review. My wife and I sailed on the Star twice in 2008 (Alaska) and 2010 (Mexico Riviera) when she still included the Spinnaker Lounge high up on the bow. It was an excellent observation lounge. Subsequently what a colossal mistake it was to eliminate this venue for the public simply to expand the Haven suites for just a few guests at the expense of a great observation lounge for the entire cruise guests. We decided we would no longer sail on the Star or her sister ship the Dawn for that very reason. Very sad that NCL would eliminate a beautiful observation lounge. Of course, more recently they have expanded the observation lounges that we've thoroughly enjoyed on ships like the Bliss and Encore. I hope NCL does not repeat the same mistake in the future.

Agree totally. I dislike the ship within a ship design. And the lack of an observation lounge is one of the reasons I dislike the Celebrity Edge Class ships.

The smaller, older ships like Star and Sun are my favorites. I just rebooked Star again today for an Iceland/Greenland cruise.

This was a balanced, candid assessment. Thank you. I've only sailed on Norwegian's older ships- Dawn, Spirit, and Jade. Doing the Gem in a few months. I usually get a cabin that's midship-and on decks 8,9,10 if possible. It helps with my motion sickness in rough seas.

We did a British Isles and Ireland cruise several years ago on the Jade. I got the impression that this was a trial for NCL though I can`t confirm that. The Cruise was amazing but I have to say, I thought tendering was a bit of a disaster. First we stopped at Guernsey in the channel islands. There is no large ship terminal there, indeed the harbour is tiny, so much so that only one tender boat (life boat) can enter the harbour at a time. Consequently, the line ups for return were enormous, to the point that the ship was several hours late leaving. Not much to be done in this case as the island is what it is, there is no place to put a big port. However , not the case with our second tender, Edinburgh...We tendered out in the middle of the Firth or Forth, a full 35 minute ride into the port. When we got into the port, I noticed that there was an empty cruise terminal, where I spoke to a member of the staff who informed me that the terminal was open and operational. NCL did not want to pay the fees associated with docking there. In Dublin, we docked at the Victoria pier, an easy walk into town. I can`t imagine why your ship tendered there except perhaps to save money. Our cruise was amazing in every sense of the word, BUT it still irks me that our valuable time was wasted in these cases, just to save money.

I went on a 10 day European cruise on NCL last summer on the Gem and the entertainment at night was minimal as well. No big shows and there was not a single comedian. To me it was shocking because on all the NCL cruises that I have been on, there has been a lot of entertainment. I wonder if it has to do with being in Europe and more port heavy though.

How was the military reception? I noticed one of you had the packet when you were giving the room tour
@AlohaLove2Learn5 ай бұрын
Great! It was held on a sea day in the early evening. We were greeted with trays of drinks, canapes, and a few other small bites. There were speeches of gratitude, recognition of members of the individual services and a chance for military passengers to introduce themselves. We met a few nice people there. They gave us a pin, a patch, and a souvenir photo. I wish there were a way to opt out of these as we don't collect souvenirs. We shared ours with a fellow veteran. If you are member of the military, retired, or veteran, please register for your discount. Princess, HAL and other cruise lines also offer discounts. With Princess and NCL, once we registered, we automatically received our discount on subsequent cruises.

Question. Does the Star have stabilizers? Recently took the NCL Sun from Baltimore to the Caribbean & back. She was rocking quite a bit side to side in relatively small waves. Had been on other newer NCL ships in visibly larger waves with no noticeable rocking. Star is just a little older than the Sun.
@benjaminsmith228711 ай бұрын
Yes. All ships have them. They may or may not have been working properly on the Sun when you sailed on her and they can malfunction on brand new ships.
@UnlockedVistas10 ай бұрын
They do have stabilizers on the Star. We sailed on the Star a couple months ago and their Q&A session about the ship included a brief overview of the stabilizers on board. I wonder if stabilizer design varies from ship to ship or has been improved on newer ships? Our sailing was a transatlantic and we found the crossing to be very smooth. It did get a bit rockier in some of the waters off the coast of Brazil, but nothing extreme.

NCL announced cutbacks in Broadway style shows over a year ago, wasn't hidden information. You also don't seem to be familiar with the NCL fleet in general. Longer cruises tend to draw people who enough the ships themselves and don't feel the need to be constantly entertained.

I/we are traveling on a nine day cruise with another couple. I really didn't think $9.95 a person was that much for communication between our friends while on the cruise. Talk, text, message on the ship? Or am I missing something?

I agree on disorganized tendering and the lack of indoor spaces...lots of spaces where there could've been windows, but instead they had light up signs selling fashion and liquor, the art gallery hall you showed, and the Photo shop! Rows upon row of shelves lined with binders...right were windows should've been! Shelving areas were labeled Bookcase 1, Bookcase 2, etc. It looked like a research room at a university or laboratory. Harsh fluorescent lighting. Fitness area had almost no views to the outside as well. Poor planning.

We just came off the Star, Reykjavik Iceland to New York. We won't be going back. The recent ship updating was excellent, the ship looks good, everywhere (except the theater, which looks like a cross between a Marseilles dock side whore house and a Russian gulag). We were booked in an inside room, very comfortable, and pleasant bathroom. Excellent, attentive service, but only once daily. End of story. Food ranged from mediocre at best to downright inedible in the Cafe. It is impossible to ruin a bowl of noodle soup. Norwegian found a way, and they were consistent. Ginza was just awful - frozen meals from your local supermarket would have been better, and Panda express is lightyears ahead. Main Dining Room: "May I get you some juice? Yes, please, two orange juices." 40 minutes later, after complaining, one juice arrives. "May I refill your coffee, ma'am? Yes, please." Cup refilled, hubby apparently was seated wearing his invisibility cloak. Noise level everywhere clocked in at 79-81dB on my phone. Cabin noise in a B737, my least favorite aircraft to fly, 78-79 dB at cruising altitude. The age of the ship is not the issue. The abject lack of crew training is, along with the refusal of the line to spend to money to correct their problem. As I said, we aren't going back.

@benjaminsmith228711 ай бұрын
This ship is "older" but doesn't even seem old to me. My idea of an old ship is one dating back to the early 1990s or earlier. I think because there are so many new ships introduced, people think of 20 year old ships as old. For me, they're middle aged.

We just returned from an 11 day Iceland, Greenland, and Canada cruise on NCL Star. This was our 2nd cruise on NCL and our last as our experience was not pleasant. We also experienced 2 cancelled port of calls adding 2 additional sea days to our itinerary. I am not sure what was updated in the staterooms but our balcony stateroom was outdated and worn. On 3 separate occasions our toilet stopped working causing maintenance to be in our cabin for about an hour each time. As well, our sliding glass door to the balcony leaked. Apparently this had gone on for quite a while because when I noticed it, I also noticed the mildew on the carpet. They did fix the problem which entailed maintenance cleaning the mildew on day 1 and then coming back on day 2 to replace the damaged carpet. These were just a few of the issues we had on our journey. My husband and I will stick with Celebrity Cruises.
