I worked with animals for just over a decade, both wildlife and domestic, and I had the most issues with reactivity with Retrievers, Chihuahuas, and Pomeranians. Never had any ill luck with Pitties, Mastiffs, or any other guardian/working breed. Got bit on chin by a Pommy, received a nice pretty 'smile' from Pug while clearing his IV line, had pretty severe reactivity and aggression from multiple Retrievers (but never Chocolate Labs?🤔), and a little bad luck with a Ringtail Lemur once.. And then there was the issue with my youngest son being hospitalized and nearly killed by Golden when he was a baby because the owners lied about the dog and my husband looked away for a second. My own Mastiff (RIP sweet pup) was attacked twice by Golden Retrievers. I would choose a guard breed over any other breed any day. Especially gentle giants. Even the ones I've owned had never shown reactivity or aggression unless someone encroached on their territory or was provoked. They never started anything.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with all of us, I feel there are a lot of myths about certain breeds going either way...good and bad. Goldens seem to be out on a pedestal for being the ultimate family dog which I just don't agree with. Great dogs but not exactly what the average person thinks they are.

I just talked about this on a BRT page. How my boy is a little over 9 and he is starting to show more protective behavior. If someone strange says hello he’ll bark and stand in front of me. What I do now is watch his body language and relax my hold a bit. Then I say no, mind your business, your with me. He does listen. I’m hopeful that he continues to listen. He’s a big boy and strong. But I handle him. He was trained well.

I'm disappointed to see the owner's dogs behaved like that (though it is their property). I have a retriever mix who's about to be 13, and while she gets a little reactive when she sees other dogs, she doesn't get aggressive. Hopefully it was just a bad day for them and you guys won't have to worry about it. That orchard is beautiful. Looks like a great place to take your dogs. Wish we had somewhere like that here in MI.
@sfdf1979 Жыл бұрын
I love the walk and talks! Sounds like your dogs handled the off-leash encounter very well. I would say it might have been a good training/learning experience for JJ, because he has Bruce modeling behavior for him. I would say that Justice didn’t over react, given that the dog jumped at him. In my experience, goldens can be very reactive! And you guys are 100% correct, the protective dog will always be blamed, which is a shame.

I love the walk and talks! 😍 My bullmastiff/American staffy is only a couple of months older than Justice (and currently weighs about 99lbs but is having issues because of his weight so he’s on a weight loss journey now 🙄). We’ve had dogs roll up on us, even just as we walk out the front door, and it scares me that he could be put down because he was defending himself It sucks that a dog’s breed or size makes them a target or make them seem innocent when these assumptions are incorrect 😐 I don’t know about anyone else but I’d totally watch Kara and the boys while you have a break! Also for Kara, Happy Early Birthday! 🎂🎉

Golden's can be really sweet. Unfortunately with the introduction of the red gene, the red coat that a lot of goldens have now seems to have led to a lot of aggression. We talked about it in vet tech class and the instructor showed videos of goldens being very aggressive and not typical "Goldens". People need to be super careful of the dog that they get, breeders need to not introduce fad things into the breed because it always causes problems. People are to blame for more dog problems than the dogs are themselves.

I'm just curious, do you get nervous when other dogs attack? Like are you afraid you wouldn't be able to have a handle on the situation if things got out of control, or are you able to stay calm to which I would think helps maintain your dog's calm in that type of situation. I don't own big dogs but I think Cane Corsos are so majestic, you guys are great with your dogs.

Those Goldens definitely didn't want the smoke with Bruce and Joey because they were only doing what Corsos were designed to do. Let's keep in mind that Corsos are decended from the ancient Roman war dogs so they have that protective nature instilled in them from generations past. For the most part the two of them are just adorable sweet teddy bears. Great video Jason and Kara.👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
