Honestly, I'd love to see a version of this sword that has been made from scratch so that its issues will have been lessened . For example ,i forget katana terms, but if you make that metal bit beneath the tsuba longer, that would give you a place to put your thumb to do the technique you were showing. Also making the tsuba resemble a crossgard by lengthening it would make the blade more usable in a European style of swordplay (i believe this could possibly cause a problem with the tsubas strength so it may need better fixtures) I also think that the slightly curved nature of the handle led to the 'zippy' since the blade would be (if held like a normal katana) slightly angled, leading to a 'drawing/slicing' motion while swinging the sword, another thing is if the technique shad was showing could be done with that sword then as the handle is curved the follow-up cut would be very slightly quicker as it is very slightly closer (as the blade would be angled to one direction slightly) I think the last comment i wrote about isnt that great of a positive but the angle of the blade lending to better slicing (in one direction) is a benifit in my opinion (i got this idea from professional chef's who use knives on a daily basis to cut hard and soft things effectively and consistently with minimal effort). I just realised as I'm writing this, isn't that one of the reasons the katana is shaped as it is.😅

If you put a crossguard on it, you might as well go all the way and put a pommel on it too.
@foldionepapyrus3441 Жыл бұрын
@@Sukenus While I do think European sword design is better, largely as the cross and other hand guards are massively protective in comparison to the Japanese swords I'm not sold the pommel would be required or even the best option. That then implies a European construction method for the whole handle and there is something positive in user feel on striking a target to the wooden dowel construction. So a riveted on or forged integral to the blade cross guard above a Katana style hilt may actually work out to be the best of both worlds for the blades that are light enough to not absolutely need that counterweight.
@Sukenus Жыл бұрын
@@foldionepapyrus3441 I was thinking of just drilling a hole into the katana handle for the pommel 😅
@foldionepapyrus3441 Жыл бұрын
@@Sukenus hmm that might work, but I think it would still work out as negating the construction difference that makes a katana handle nice to hit things with. Or you end up with having to leave a deliberate gap to allow some movement in the fit up so that katana hilt can still do its thing - which will probably pinch at some point. In both cases just building it the European way at that point seems better to me at that point. Always nice to see it tested of course, and there are so many ways you may try to add some of the counterweight of a pommel in construction technique, even if that 'pommel' is actually just part of the tang as you see in some messer where the base of the hilt flairs out a bit and may well be by far the thickest steel in the knife.

It could actually be really really cool looking and something I think a lot of people would want to buy just to have and try out :D You gents may be onto something really interesting here !! Possibly a new sword no one has ever seen before...That would be one hell of a discovery!

I'm with you I think it's cool and you fix a lot of the problems if you forged it yourself
@verrueckteriwan Жыл бұрын
I would call it a Swortana or a Longswortana :) And I think an improve would be to make a special tsuba in form of a figure 8, so you can still rest your thumb on the side of the blade without losing the "aesthetic" of a katana handle
@jgamez106 Жыл бұрын
Or have semi circles/ovals cut out on each side it would essentially be the same thing just a different aesthetic and maybe slightly more ergonomic
@thebanditman5663 Жыл бұрын
Solution for the "thumb position, for reverse cuts," literally just use a disk guard with bigger holes on the side, so it's more like a ring guard.
@adrianguerrero29492 ай бұрын
So i know this video is old,but shad if u read this. I know how to fix the guard on that sword. It one of two ways. 1 u go with the basket style guard of the rapier. It works in the Japanese odachi because some of the odachis had big hole in the guard. Just make a guard the size ok the odachi and move the holes closer to the center. Method 2 is just cutting the gaurd to make grouves that allow for the thumb placement. Also center the sword.

I think that katana fittings are in general a gorgeous art form. I don’t dispute that there are very artful cross guard hilts too, but I have never liked European blade fittings aesthetics as much as I have Japanese. So I think it’s a cool blade! And I do get how it looks like a Chinese design now a bit.
@Hugh.G.Rectionx Жыл бұрын
european fittings are generally more decorative. the simple style of japanese ones arent my thing

I strangely kind of like how this looks. It kind of reminds me of a Dao but also reminds of a migration era sword minus the pommel. Possible names: Rondel sword Longtana Eurasian long sword

Or Londel/Longdel for long Rondel ? 😂

As others have mentioned, if you straighten out the handle it would resemble an oversized Tsurugi or Ken. Honestly i love it. The whole east meets west concept is cool. Definitely something worth expanding upon.
@xxTheArrow Жыл бұрын
Now you need to do a true cross guard with the katana handle!!!
@adarshiyer4805 Жыл бұрын
You could just name it "Chōken," which is just a literal japanese translation for long sword, which makes sense since this is an unnatural extraction of something European dropped into something Japanese, just like this translation. (verify this with something better than google translate tho)

You should try turning a katana into a cutlass! Or even a rapier! I think that would be interesting too!
@tbnrrenagade9507 Жыл бұрын
Then it’ll just eventually become lies of p’s weapon modification system where they attach something like a bone saw to a rapier hilt
@aj.j5833 Жыл бұрын
Also how about a Falx with a Japanese style Tsuba and hilt as well or butterfly swords with basket hilt. Think they actually basically did make Katana into cutlass for Japanese military at one time.
@Daniel_Rood Жыл бұрын
@@aj.j5833 That would be cool too! And fair enough on the katana/cutlass, I think you're right. I kinda forgot that those were a thing. I just really love cutlass and rapiers.
@aj.j5833 Жыл бұрын
@@Daniel_Rood Same for cutlass, they my favorite type of sword since I was a kid. Second favorite for me is the Bowie Swords of Civil War. Something about how you can see so clearly how a knife grew to become a sword while still recognize where it came from.
@Daniel_Rood Жыл бұрын
@@aj.j5833 Hell yeah! I've wanted a Bowie sword for as long as I can remember! I've never found anyone that makes a decent one though. Closest I've gotten is a generally Bowie shaped machete. It's okay, but not great. Certainly not as cool as the real deal.

"Abaddon" or "Forsaken" would be a good name for that, dam that thing looks terrifying. I would love to get that in hands of the Sekisensei or some actual Japanese sword master and see the look on their faces when they pull it out and expect it to be a katana :D

One thing You may not have realised is the long handguard may allow for some serious thrusting power, you could anchor your hand high up on one hand and low or even on the bottom and do some seriously heavy lunges.

This sword would technically be categorized as a 洋刀 Pronounced Yoto meaning Western Blade which denotes a Sword of Western lineage as opposed to 日本刀 Pronounced Nihontou meaning Japanese Blade denoting a sword of Japanese lineage. Though I would presume your creation to be named 洋刀-日本刀 Nihon-Yoto meaning Japanese-Western Blade.

@@Tuck-Shop Japanese stupid Foreigner blade? I don't think you need the Baka for Japanese though in Japanese 外人 pronounced Gaijin is actually short for 外国人 pronounced Gaikokujin meaning Foreign Country person though Gaikokuhito is sometimes used with groups as far im aware Gaikokujin is more like Outsider as opposed to Gaijin-san which is more along the lines of Mister Outsider or Respected Foreigner in meaning. Sort of like how Outsider is considered more negative than foreigner depending on the tone context and way it's used in English.

I think it’s a great idea. This design can change dramatically depending on the sword you use as a base, and it was this particular blade’s style that made it seem like a dagger. I’d personally go with a shorter blade with a point that isn’t so acicular. That way, the swords weight becomes more balanced and the katana’s handle becomes, in comparison to the blade, larger and more comfortable for a larger variety of movement & attacks.

2:02 FIY, you should find and put the nut back on (or buy one) because that nut keeps the two halves of the shell together and puts pressure on the bearing. If the bearing seizes or starts moving, it will mess up the halves and the tool becomes junk even if you don't have the nut on. Don't ask me how i know. :)

It looks like a medieval lightsaber, if that makes sense. Just the combination of the hilt and blade shape, gives lightsaber vibes but it's a regular sword.

Refitting a japanese blade onto a longsword hilt just basically gets you a variation of a Messer... But the other way around, I have no idea what that would be... Looking around at swords, Long Tsurugi?
