When I was in grade school (I'm 70 now) We had a big sow that we could not keep in. Our dog "Butch" would come to the school bus everyday to meet my two brothers and I when we got home. It wasn't a long before the sow followed Butch to meet the bus. We were the joke for a while but we would ride the sow back to the house. It wasn't long until everyone wanted get off at our house to ride the sow.

Just a tip to mull over. Your boar will mangle a hog panel when he wants out. 20 years ago I learned to sink some wooden posts also to staple the panels onto also. These hogs are not pets and so strong you will need to be so careful especially when the babies are born. We tend to let out guards down but never do that with hogs. Be safe and God bless!

Hey Kevin - we have the same setup for the pig's water that you used to use (nipple on a 55 gal plastic barrel). We fixed the problem of them making a wallow underneath the nipple by putting a 4ft x 4ft piece of cattle (or pig) panel underneath the barrel. This way the pigs can't dig right there and there's not enough water flowing out of the nipple for the ground to get soaked outside that 4x4ft area either. Works like a charm.

We also had this problem and built a pad with gravel and railroad ties to resolve it and it’s working great so far!

I bet both of your gilts were bred but one absorbed her litter. Pigs need some things to breed and farrow successfully. You need to give your pigs at minimum a Farrowsure vaccine in addition to regular worming and add a binder to your feed such as bentonite clay. Mycotoxins are very bad this year in corn and Zeralanone is the number 1 culprit in feed causing litter failure. We have been raising pigs for 9 years in Northwest Arkansas and have learned many lessons. Please feel free to contact us with any questions 😊

You might want to try a 3 strand ground return electric fence. Top and bottom lines are live and the middle line is connected to the ground rod that the portable energizer is attached to. We keep our Berkshire boar who weighs approximately 650 lbs in with it. The top line is at about snout level( or maybe a touch higher and the other 2 lines are about 3 inches below each other. If he tries to push through he hits both ground and live and gets the full charge. He hasn't yet tried to push through and has only tested the top line once or twice. It takes a bit longer to set up, but is easier than moving panels.

Had a friend with a hobby farm...one of her horses learned how to open the door into the kitchen, just by watching...interesting to walk down the hall to see what dogs are fussing about...and there is a horse standing just looking at me! I hollered for her to come here...quick, but didn't say why...she came running down hall, and slid to a stop...wish I'd had my cell phone in my hand for a pic!! Horse didn't want back out, had already found box of dog snacks...was foraging for more...finally had to go out to feed room in barn and get a bucket with feed to bribe him out!! And he kept trying to get back in, following when we unloading big bag dogfood, and unloading groceries...

Just some thoughts (we did farrow to finish for 6 years). We started out with 60. We quickly grew to over 300. Some suggestions: when hogs can see out of their pen, they are more apt to get out, even with a hot wire. 2-hogs (not just ones giving birth) go nuts when delivery is soon. They act like sharks at feeding time. 3rd-we were always able to tell our guilts and sows were pregnant because their vagina (tear drop portion) points upward. If it points downwards they are open. And lastly, within 24 hrs you need to give iron shot, cut I teeth (esp if you plan on rebreeding their mom) as they will shred the nipples. It’s also easiest to cut the boys at this same time as they are easiest to handle.
@allenschmitz96443 жыл бұрын
Dont forgit the shots you have to give them..all pig farm jobs are NO FUN..and pigs are crafty at escaping and dream of going feral all there life to the last Oink.
