I left the church because they stopped preaching and following what Jesus taught. I found a poem that encapsulates what I feel about the whole situation: To the church of my youth, What did you expect me to do? You taught me to love my neighbors, to model the life of Jesus. To be kind and considerate, and to stand up for the bullied. You taught me to love people, consider others as more important than myself. You taught me to sing "red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight." We sang it together, pressing the volume pedal and leaning our hearts into the chorus. You said that “He loved all the children of the world”. You taught me to love my enemies, to even do good to those who wish for bad things. You taught me to never "hate" anyone and to always find ways to encourage people. You taught me it's better to give than receive, to be last instead of first. To help the poor, the widow, the stranger at the gate. You taught me that Jesus looks at what I do for the least-of-these as the true depth of my faith. You taught me to focus on my own sin and not to judge. You taught me to be accepting and forgiving. So I paid attention. I took in every lesson. And I did what you taught me. But now, you call me a “libtard”. A queer-lover. You call me "woke." A backslider. You call me a heretic. You make fun of my heart. You mock the people I’m trying to help. You say I’m a child of the devil. You call me soft. A snowflake. A socialist. You shun the very people you told me to help. What did you expect me to do? I thought you were serious, but apparently not. You hate nearly all the people I love. You stand against nearly all the things I stand for. I'm trying to see a way forward, but it's hard when I survey all the hurt, harm, and darkness that comes in the wake of your beliefs and presence. What did you expect me to do? I believed it all the way. I'm still believing it all the way. Which leaves me wondering, what happened to you? by Chris Kratzer, edited by Jay McDaniel

One of the problems in America is the understanding of Christianity - much of it is not Biblical. When someone’s faith is tied up in politics there’s a huge problem. When I hear people say “ if you vote Democrat you’re not a Christian or if you vote Republican you’re not a Christian or Christians have an obligation to vote it tells me they don’t understand the word of God. Whether we call ourselves Christians or followers of Christ we still identify with Jesus Christ and society has a problem with it that’s not our focus. The world will hate us no matter what we call ourselves our focus should be to honour God and His word whatever the cost. They had a problem with Jesus the apostles and the early church and they will have a problem with us too, there were false teachers there was political unrest. Those who professed to be godly abused their position, twisted the scriptures persecuted the church, their response was always to go back to the word. Jesus is the one who will separate the sheep from the goats.

There are many more churches and Christians that have integrity and don't promote politics or the church as an idol. Confronting those church leaders and possibly leaving that church was possibly the right thing to do. But don't let that cloud the more important part of that story, which is the love of Christ!

@@enmodo I see so many churches here in Florida make such an impact and bless their communities the way Amy described the beginning of her story. And sadly, she has had leaders who make politics an idol before God. But most churches around here as well as the one I attend does not. The government is not our savior. Republicans or Democrats are not our savior. How we treat our adversaries in politics is more important than the policies as well. Churches that get it wrong can trip up so many. That's why the Bible says teachers will be held to a higher standard. My church is very demographically diverse, and they flat out condemn much or Donald Trump and Republican rhetoric. @amyhawk9 and @lotusthemermaid I was born into and raised as a Southern Baptist for the first twelve years of my life. My mother, sister and I stopped attending our father's family-church after they divorced in '62. He was routinely unfaithful to my mother and she, after extending forgiveness several times and counseling sessions with our pastor, lost faith in the sanctity of marriage and divorced him. My "sperm-donor" as I have referred to him for many, many decades was never a true father to my sister and me. But if anyone asked him, he would shout that he was a good Christian and spit religious drivel to prove his point. Such has been my opinion of Christians ever since. For the decade following their divorce, we-three (actually, him as well) were church-less. It was during this time that I began examining God and religion and determined that I was an agnostic; I had doubts. It took about another ten years for me to stop straddling the fence and choose one or the other; I chose atheist. A burden was lifted from me by my choice and I've been very (May I be allowed to substitute extremely for very?) happy since that revelation. No need to state more on my conversion. When Trump announced his candidacy for POTUS, I was sure he wouldn't be taken seriously. My subscription to "Newsweek" from '72 through the late eighties or early nineties contained stories about Trump that were unfavorable; apparently he was not known to be an honorable man. Knowing just a little about him, I was still shocked at his conduct during the debates and his campaign speeches and even more shocked when the nation chose him to lead us! How, why would any American vote for someone on such a low level for POTUS?! My lead-in paragraph was unintentionally extended; my apologies. Due to your comments I have ordered "Jesus and John Wayne" and "The Judas Effect" both, hardcover editions. I look forward to "studying" them. It's too late for an attempt to enlighten folks before "the vote" but, two (of many) excellent forays into Trump's psyche/soul are "Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man" by Mary Trump and "Lucky Loser" by Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig. If you have not read these and are curious about Trump in a little more depth, I highly recommend you do. I often get booted off of web sites because "someone" doesn't like or agree with my comments. I'll be surprised if this one doesn't. Fingers crossed.

@@amyhawk9 there's a saying that floats around athiest and lgbtq spaces "there is no greater hate than christian love". and I know that's not true of all christians, but it's true of way too many. what it means generally is that too many christians put their beliefs and principals far ahead of their empathy, and their idea of love has become corrupted into "I will say and do anything to uphold my beliefs without regard to whether they hurt people or not". I think too it encompasses the idea that a lot of christians think they are good people because they are christians, and what they do no matter what it is. added onto that, they are god's people and if they do wrong they will be forgiven by god. but the issue is that forgiveness doesn't come with accountability to the people that they hurt. also, I've found that one of the easiest ways to make people do awful things is to convince them that they are good people and what they do is justified and good, maybe even righteous.

As an African American Christian, I wonder if the change in your church started earlier than 2016...that is, in 2008 or 2012, when Obama was elected. One of my White church friends whom I thought was okay with Black people suddenly started spouting online all this highly racist rhetoric against Obama. I think many White Christians thought that People of Color had gone too far, assuming the highest office in the land. As a lifelong Christian I’m so saddened by what I saw happen in my church starting during COVID-19. There we only a few of us who advocated for following accepted scientific principles (masking, social distancing), and when I suggested we remind people that Jesus commanded us to love one another and that meant not potentially infecting our brothers and sisters in Christ with a potentially fatal disease, I was told I couldn’t say that because some people could be offended. We’re also happy to minister to people who are ‘safe’ (mentally handicapped, elderly, single pregnant women), but nothing too risky like LGBTQ youth, minorities or immigrants. I don’t fit in and it’s sad. I take my tithes and contribute to social justice and animal welfare, continue in my walk with God, and pray I’ll find a church home that follows His word in love to all. These days, such terms are thrown around so loosely, I have to look up the definition in a dictionary to see what the word once meant. Personally, I don't see people that are touting the candidate they supported as cultish; if that was the case, the left is more guilty as not a single part member has been critical of any ranking members - plenty of republicans have been critical of Trump. I feel the democrats win if they would've put Gavin Newsome up there. Not hard to see the next most influential parties (independent, libertarian) are predominantly comprised of former members of the right. This fracture is proof which party toes the line more than the other, and that is the left - there should be just as many democrat independents and libertarians as there are republicans. Toeing the line to the point you lose control of all branches of government is the most cultish action of any political party to date - no non-voting centrists are surprised one bit by the result. Are we a cult?

I asked them where was the church when I asked for marriage counseling and the pastor didn't show up, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't backsliding since I confessed scripture, prayed daily, fasted - all the things waiting on God to change my husband. But God isn't going to run over someone's will - my husband wasn't willing to change. You can identify a true disciple of Christ when they speak from His heart. As one of His disciples, I walk in agreement with you beautiful sister. Blessed are you for speaking the hard truth that many in the evangelical church don't want to hear! Jesus said many will be offended in this day because of Him and will turn away. Those who oppose you may be many but only few walk the narrow way. I've been saying lately that if Jesus was on earth in the flesh and especially in America, He would be rejected as He was by the Pharisees and Saducees of His day. Jesus' message of "Love God with all thy heart, soul, and mind and Love thy neighbor as thyself' was radical and offensive then and now! The "evangelicals" who attack and revile those of us who believe in Jesus' message reveal the condition of their heart. We pray for them and continue to spread the message of love as well as share it with our neighbors no matter who they are! I also find it interesting that these same "evangelicals" who make excuses for Trump didn't do the same for any Democratic president. Church is the people and not a building. Where two or three are gathered in God's name, there He is in the midst. Continue to be strong in the Lord and the power of His might, putting on His whole armor that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Take up your armor that you having done all you can and just stand! God bless you and keep fighting the good fight of faith, defend the gospel and contend for the faith. The NAR promotes the idea that Christians should gain control over all aspects of society- politics, business and culture. And that we can do this and are called to do so because of our spiritual authority and elite favor and influence from God. That's also what my church taught. Instead of giving to the sheep they took from them and trained them to idolize the pastors, leaders, prophets etc. But the Bible says true religion is keeping ourselves from sinful worldly affairs and serving the needy. I was told that we should excuse what Trump (and others) have done because we are all sinners and have fallen short. I said that forgiveness (if they repent) does not mean that the offender gets to continue as a leader. The New Testament has standards for who can serve as a church leader, and Jesus said to be perfect as he was; the goal is holiness. “Imagine a pastor has sexually abused a parishioner”, I told my friend, “even if they apologize, that does not mean they get to remain a pastor.” The sad thing is that Trump has NOT admitted to any wrong doing at all so he is even less fit to be a leader than one who has admitted, apologized, and made efforts to rectify and change.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I deeply admire your courage in expressing these thoughts. I no longer refer to myself as a "Christian" either, but rather as a follower of Christ. The word "Christian" has become associated with so much that I cannot align with. I stopped attending church long ago, even before the Tr*mp era, because I witnessed things within the church that didn’t sit right with me. Leaving was a difficult decision, but it was the best one for my faith. Since stepping away, my relationship with Christ has grown stronger and more personal. I’ve found peace and authenticity outside of the organized institution, and I know many others who have had a similar journey. What’s happening in the church today is heartbreaking and disturbing. It’s hard to understand how someone can claim to follow Christ while supporting and aligning with values that seem completely opposed to His teachings. I truly believe many have been led astray, and the enemy thrives in this division and misguidance. I am a Democrat and a liberal, and I feel strongly that Christ’s teachings are far more aligned with those values. He was a revolutionary, compassionate, and inclusive-not conservative in the sense we see today. I cannot reconcile the way conservatives often treat immigrants, the marginalized, or those in need with the love and justice Christ preached. Thank you again for this post and for being bold enough to share your heart. I hope it reaches others and sparks meaningful reflection. Best of luck with your book! 😊

Excellent analysis….let me add one thing they didn’t encounter the living Christ because when this truly happens there’s a revolution that takes place inside and racism and bigotry must go. This’s strong but I will say it when a person has truly experienced Jesus He initially radically changes everything from the inside out and He attacks culture head on, and as you grow in Him and allow Him to change you into his image everything that’s not of Him falls off. This’s the true church in a nutshell, anything that doesn’t meet this standard is only a form of godlessness but it’s not real hence the desperate need for spiritual discernment.

Wow, I feel the same way. I brought up my daughters in the evangelical faith and now in my 50’s I find myself trying to find an apolitical congregation. It’s been such a challenge that I no longer call myself an evangelical and stopped going to church. I had a conversation post- Covid shut down, with the new pastor of my former church. I told him how I felt about Christians worshipping a man and doing the opposite of what Jesus did on earth. Shortly after, I started seeing the same at the church, through guests speakers, senior pastors, video clips they would show. They even took a group of young men from church to meet the Republican congressmen to DC and made a huge deal about it. I ended my involvement with that church. It’s very disappointing to see Christians become cult leaders, enablers and excuse behavior that we wouldn’t accept from our kids.

When told that it's literally Christ's teachings, they respond that these teachings are weak and are no longer valid. More than one preacher said this! This is the sorry state of conservative, evangelical Christianity. Yes, I just criticized conservative Christianity. Conservatism in not better or more pure than liberal theology. It's just as sinful as liberal theology, just in different areas. Today, the conservative, evangelical church is filled with people who are more concerned with their power and social standing and spout Jesus-talk just to impress others and do not show Christ in their actions. Their fruit is rotten, so naturally, they're attracted to a sin-filled con artist like Trump. These people were never true Christians in the first place, or they'd be able to see through Trump.

I feel I am in a similar place. I have never heard messages from the pulpit about how to vote or that have any strong political implications, but politics seems to be all that the people in the church talk about, and it's all pro-trump. No one talks about Jesus in church anymore outside of the sermons. But my conviction is that if I leave, who will be there in the church to counter this mentality, if only a little bit? I might suggest considering joining a predominantly black, protestant, evangelic church if there are any in your area. Those church's still seem to preach the words of Jesus; love your neighbor, care for the poor, the elderly, the widows, the orphans, and the refugees. I live in an almost all white area of the country, but I found a predominantly black church online and I watch their recorded services throughout the week. Those churches sermons seem to revolve around love, grace, forgiveness, and acceptance more than predominantly white churches do. It gives me hope that the church can still be the church instead of the political voting bloc that white evangelical churches seem to have devolved into. But then there is the issue of why are there black churches and white churches in the first place, when the Bible also seems to teach about inclusion and equality - Galatians 3:28 is a verse that comes to mind.

💯Thank you for sharing you perspective. I am an older woman, a follower of Jesus for over 60 years, and have been involved in various evangelical churches depending on where we lived. I could never have imagined that people I have respected and thought to be strong Christians could fall for this distorted Christianity, a different gospel that is not the Good News of Jesus Christ. I am surrounded by Christian evangelical family and friends who support Trump and consider liberals and Democrats evil and demonic. I was told that I am not even a Christian because of my "liberal" thinking, and yet Trump's behavior is excused because he is just a "baby Christian". It is a sad and lonely place to be, and yet my faith and love for Jesus has only grown through it all. God has led me to a wonderful black church that preaches, teaches and lives the gospel of Jesus in truth. I have been very well accepted there as a white person, and I am so thankful that God has provided that refuge for me. I pray for courage, wisdom and strength for all who follow Him in what has begun to feel like the narrow path.
