Watching Delos is part of why we decided to do the same thing. We left the States 6 years ago and love the lifestyle. We met the Delos crew in Grenada several years ago and they were very down to earth. We are now in Thailand and plan to stay in Southeast Asia for a while.

He also saves a lot of money by fixing everything himself. If I remember right from the other videos he put himself through college by working as an electrician for the power company. It's amazing what he can fix himself. Certainly puts in a lot of very hard labor to keep that boat going.

I saw another video detailing the cost to cruise. The same boat, young guy made money in tech with hot girl, but he had all upkeep done by professionals. That seemed to add about $25k/year to costs and he was continually scheduling. He didn't seem less burdened even though Amel has one of the best support networks and the boat was in the age "sweet spot". I am into sailboat design and often see guys who think they can build a sailboat to save money. I always tell them that if they have even half the talent that takes they should work fixing others boats and put that money rehabbing an old sailboat. It will get them on the water in less than half the time and every port they visit will be an employment opportunity.

FWIW, the boat is an Amel Super Maramu. They are a bit unique in offering a boat that is surprisingly manageable by 1 while looking like a terrestrial home. There are tougher boats. There are "push button" to sail boats, but these are unique in doing both without looking like a tank. The company has gone upscale since this boat was produced to the $1M+ market. The predecessor of this boat is the 46ft "Maramu" that can be purchased used and fitted for cruise for ~100k. Before the pandemic I was ready to jump on a plane to Greece to do exactly that. If you are planning to support a cruising lifestyle with YT vids you need a hot woman -that might be more more cost and trouble than the sailboat.

Well. I was wondering where he found the girl... And my advice to you - go to NZ or AU, you might just find one ;). But thank you for an info on the boat. I thought it was 45-footer, cause it would suffice. Also, I was questioning him waiting for a boat to "happen" in the US, instead of going somewhere to pick it.

For the idiots in here that think they are doing this because it's affordable: 1. It's a $400,000 boat. 2. It's an asset that doesn't appreciate in value. 3. They have the luxury not to have a 9-5 that requires them in person. 4. He had to save up, sell everything and he still ended up making out his credit cards. 5. They still almost went bankrupt and had to work random jobs to get by. This was not a house replacement. This was a lifestyle decision.

I'll call bulls#!t on $1900/month budget. I live aboard and cruise on a smaller, much less complex boat that costs about 1/4 of what Delos did. Wear and tear on sails, rigging, engine components, pumps, electronics, and many other things adds up. One oft-quoted rule of thumb calls for 10% to 20% of the value of the boat to be spent each year keeping her seaworthy. In my case, I have to put aside about $15,000 / year ($1250/month) for replacing things as they wear out. OK, rant over. Best thing I ever did was to quit my job and go sailing. This young family is living the dream. I just think they're misrepresenting the true cost of living that dream.

He’s SPENDING $1900/month on the boat itself! He makes WAY more than that. It’s funny that these KZbinrs, especially the ones who use “crowdfunding, aka Patreon, don’t like to admit how much money they make. Many people who pay into Patreon are just regular folks making $30-50K per year and they don’t understand that channels like SV Delos are bringing in $500K\yr or more based on sponsorships. I personally just don’t like that they take that money from folks who really can’t afford it. KZbinrs try to claim that they’re putting out videos out of the goodness of their hearts and that they ONLY make money through Patreon/crowdfunding, which is complete B.S.! I’ve been watching SV Delos for more than 10 years and they are one of the Sailing channel OGs, but since they had the babby, they have also become some serious e-beggers. Their original videos were all about cruising the world with friend and having fun. At the end of each video they would have a “buy us a beer” link, which was obviously for donations…but it was subtle. The videos have become kind of boring and they are no longer subtle about asking for money. It’s weird because the more money they make, the more the actual content suffers. You would think with more money comes better content but in reality it actually just leads to them wanting to make even more money.

They are artists. And as demand grew, they became a business. They sell to whomever will pay. We don't shame Blink-182 for selling their albums or concert tickets to people making $50k/yr. We can call them both sellouts if we want, but at least they're out there creating something. Whether it's good or bad is subjective.

Yeah, we have been watching Delos for years and it has motivated us to buy a boat too….just…when the KZbin Illusion fades the hard reality of costs and always breaking stuff and never ending « projects » begins…. Making you realize that only money will produce these dreams. The most wicked thing is that one job always produces five others and you wake up in the morning with your mind running around the issues. We loved the beginning of Delos, with their wild adventures, while Senor Brady was still around….. now it has become a family show and the spiciness faded a bit…..but still, thanks for the happy moments watching the initial part of your journey, Brian & Brady.

I watch a lot of sailing youtube channels and SV Delos is one of my favourites, and if you want to see people fixing the exact same boat after it hit a container ship then Sailing Merewether is also cool. And then there is also Sailing Millennial Falcon, Teulu Tribe, WhiteSpotPirates, Adventures of an old Seadog they are all very cool. I like these sailing youtube channels because it's about people having adventures, whatever the adventure is it's entertaining. I'm not a fan of the youtube channels where they just point a camera at themselves and shout "wwooo hhhhooo!!!", if there is no adventure and just people trying to look cool, it's not entertaining.
