World travellers, divers and filmmakers of The Jetlagged are setting out to give threatened coral ecosystems a new chance: They build an artificial reef on a Indonesian island paradise with heavily damaged corals. The Biorock structure will be equipped with a special feature: Electricity. This has proven to give corals super powers - enhancing growth and health with astonishing success.
6 months later, The Jetlagged come back to check out the progress on their reef…

I don't really know why, but I get very emotional & start tearing up a lot watching this. The ocean is my passion, & I've recently learned coral reefs are what peak my interest. I get so angry when I see how unbelievably careless people are when it comes to taking care of the environment, the ocean in particular. I get really worried when I see severely damaged coral reefs because I'm afraid I won't be able to study them after college (currently a junior). Seeing something like this that is SO beneficial to coral reefs immediately & long-term makes me very happy. It just warms my heart to see people actually care & create something to help coral reefs so well

Great video and thank you for replying to the other comments even though the video is old. This inspired me to create a project proposal to my nearby community on coral reef restoration. Thank you once again for your selfless service to preserving the marine ecosystem

Interesting, have you calculated how much CO2 is produced from making the steel frame and the electricity? How much does this offset the gain of improving the reef?

Some 70% of our breathable oxygen in the atmosphere comes from the oceans (the plankton). The rest from the trees. We can see when trees disappear, but we won't know when plankton will disappear, likely from temperature rise and acidity in the oceans, which cover 70% of the earth.

Nice video but I want specs on the electrical system so it can be widely replicated by anyone who lives near a ocean many small beach cleaning groups would love to do more for the oceans don't horde the knowledge pass it on please.

Hello Barskor1, thank you, we're happy you like the film and appreciate your interest in the method! If you want to know more about the Biorock technology and get additional information, please visit the websites of the inventors (we're not the inventors, just filmmakers): www.globalcoral.org and www.biorock.org/ and reach out to the Global Coral Reef Alliance.

nice efforts👍👍👍👍👍..... but how current is provided to this structure and will it not effect the fishes or other living organism?
@astraswishbook
@astraswishbook 8 ай бұрын
it's low-voltage, and provided through power cables.

What kind of current ? 12 V enough ?
@ickerish
@ickerish 8 жыл бұрын
how much current is being used in this cage built here? also, how is this power driven? can this power be driven by natural means like sun or current?
@thejetlagged
@thejetlagged 8 жыл бұрын
+ickerish: It is a low voltage current, maybe between 5 and 12 volt. There are several options for the power supply. In the case depicted in the film, we used a power cable coming from land. But floating solar panels are also possible, as well as small wind turbines or even little wave energy generators.

The Jetlagged | Scuba Diving & Travel Videos - Always Adventure. Thanks for getting back! Ok awesome. A small team of mechanical engineering undergraduates here at University of Hawaii at Manoa will be building an underwater shelving system to husband coral in areas where the reef has been damaged. I think driving the current through solar would add some fun to the project. The reef you guys built is very inspiring! I'd love to know more about how I could be a part of saving the ocean like that. I'll be graduating in a year and want to be useful to the planet in anyway I can!

The Jetlagged - Ocean Films & Adventures you stated that you used a power cable coming from land. Was it attached with one end to the metal biorock and the other end on a 12 battery? Like a car battery?

Can they survive without the electric current?
@thejetlagged
@thejetlagged 5 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, they absolutely can and will! But as long as the electricity is running, they benefit from the enhanced conditions within the electric field, where they grow faster and are more resistant towards environmental stress factors, such as warming water.
