Little edit from some shots taken on day one of the A7s workshop I held at B&H Photo Video for Sony USA in October.
Most of it is "lens whacking" with a Helios 44 M. Other shots on the Sony FE 24-70m F4 and Canon 70-200mm F4. Vast majority of shots at 60p interpreted as 24p in Premiere CC.
Graded with filmconvert's A7s presets and custom curves. 10% off with code bloom at gopb.co/filmcon...

I know you used 'FilmConvert' in post but for us students out there with little to know budget is it possible to make this effect in Premiere? I like how the blacks look soft.

Sure..just play around with the 3-way colour corrector and you will find out....
@RemoFiore
@RemoFiore 9 жыл бұрын
As Andreas says just play around with colour correction in premiere and you'll get something that looks very similar. I unfortunately don't have the possibility of using these cameras and still shoot with a panasonic TM700 camcorder, but I strive to try and get the look that Philip Bloom obtains and I am happy with the results I'm getting although I have a long way to go before I can honestly say I've nailed it hahahahaha, I love everything this man does as far as I'm concerned he is a true video artist. I have learned so much and gained so much inspiration through watching his videos. I have on my "wish list", to participate in at least one of his seminars, but alas, living in italy that isn't as easy as it seems, unless.........Mr Philip Bloom could come and do a seminar in Italy someplace, like Rome for example, I'd gladly to attend ! Oh well back to the grindstone ! Peace and Namaste my friends !

Hi Tom, there are some tools within premiere pro to get a similar look. If you try cineon convertor, if I recall it's under utilities in video effects. It's a great tool. Depending on what settings you shoot it has just about every option covered. If using a log preset, then use log-linear, play around with settings. Use three way color correction after cineon convertor, then and add grain (don't use color grain, black and white only) This will get you close. Philip has a distinct look to his videos which is his style, your best bet is to get something similar that you like then develop into your own style. be an individual;-)

Try this..on the RGB curves effect, with the master graph, create a simple S curve with three dots, then with the dot on the blacks, just lift the levels up, giving the video a faded look where the blacks are, couple this with changing the colors of your film I feel like this comes close to the grade Philip has in his video.

hey mr. bloom! i discovered something ... i was always worried about getting dust on the sensor while lens whacking ... so i bought a retro adapter (normally for macro) then put a uv filter instead a lens on it and now no dust can get to the sensor, but you need a canon fd lens or a normal fullframe lens on the a7

Casey Wilson I don't know if you have ever used an a7s but if you even breath on it wrong you get rolling shutter.

***** I think that's a bit extreme, besides apsc mode reduces rolling shutter to much more palatable levels.

How do you compare The A7s with the Canon 5DMKIII
@Proctie1
@Proctie1 10 жыл бұрын
You can't. There's nothing the 5D MkIII can do (video wise) that the A7s can't, but there's plenty of stuff the A7s can that the 5D MkIII can't. It's really easy: 5D MkIII = Photography camera. A7s = Mirrorless that is designed for video. The 5D Mark III has been proven wayyyy too many times to be overpriced if you are looking to shoot video. Not only is it overpriced in terms of only looking at the ability to shoot video, but also in terms of features such as information, codecs, usability, pixeldensity and much more. It's a no-brainer :)
@NejcKavka

Proctie1 One thing at which 5D mk3 is better than A7s is definitely rolling shutter problem ...
@Proctie1
@Proctie1 10 жыл бұрын
Nejc Kavka If you DEEPLY care about rolling shutter and is going to tip your towards the 5D MkIII, then go in APS-C Mode on the A7s - problem solved :) Otherwise, Rolling shutter can be easily fixed in post in those rare occasions you experience it.

maybe you should have read the description first. it says that he wa susing lens whacking a lot on his shots. this certainly describes a lot of the out of focus shots. just google it. its a way to shoot pics and video with a lens not actually attached to the camera body but held just in front of it. ^^

***** Thanks for the explanation, mate. I guess I am old-fashioned in this regard. Whatever the technique, I expect to see a well-focused subject. The recent trend of shooting stuff out of focus and also in shakycam manner - granted, these two are not directly related - makes my eyes bleed and my head blow up. Funny how manufacturers try to make things with minimal tolerances only for the end users to "whack" it.
