It was the Talkbox….but your still 💯 percent correct. Legend!!!

@Raheem McKenzie Yes sir, it was actually a vocoder. They used many terms for it. But talkbox and voicebox were used as well. Yes sir, You're 💯 correct, Roger was an innovator and legend.
@raheemmckenzie1811 Жыл бұрын
@@robertislas8444 I thought the vocoder came out in the 90s. Am I wrong? Most of his hits were early 80s….like early early 80s. Nonetheless, his production and engineering was top notch for being done on reels. I’m still in awe of his clarity.

This was a new one for me, it is really beautiful. The only song that I was familiar with from Roger and Zapp was "More Bounce to the Ounce". I remember that being a fun dance song in the day. I am not a super big fan of the voice box but when you put it in context it was new and different at the time they were doing using it. I do love their funky sound. I really enjoyed the guitar riffs in funk music, they are amazing.

The world lost a great one when Roger Troutman left it! He was tragically murdered in front of his recording studio by his bandmate & brother Larry Troutman. Larry then drove to the family home but never exited his vehicle and committed suicide in front of the house. Very tragic story. But Roger & Zapp left behind a ton of hit records & the remaining members of the family kept Zapp going & still tour to this day.

Hi. New to the Channel. The VoxBox, Voice Box or Talk box is not a computer at all. Roger used a custom-made talkbox-the Electro Harmonix "Golden Throat"-through a Moog Minimoog and later in his career a Yamaha DX100 FM synthesizer. This is the predecessor of Auto-tune. You are watching the video he made after creating the actual song. If you can find any video of Roger or the group Zapp, you will see Roger playing a keyboard that is connected to the voicebox. A clear tube from the Vox box goes in your mouth. roughly about 6 inches. You play the notes as you sing and it gives you an electronic sound. Roger was in so much demand and the family was doing so much with real estate in Ohio that Roger left Zapp. Are you familiar with California Love? Dr. Dre' and Tupac featuring Roger. Give it a listen. The first person that I remember using the Vox Box was Peter Frampton. He used it with his guitar so it sounded like the guitar was talking. Stevie Wonder experimented with it. He introduced it to Roger Troutman. Snoop went old school and used it for the song Sensual Seduction. The Vox Box evolved into the vocorder which evolved into Auto-Tune. Auto-tune was supposed to correct a bad spot in the recording but T Pain used it during a whole song and developed a sound. T Pain can actually sing. He doesn't need it. Auto Tune is a computer generated program. i haven't used my Vox box in about 25 years. Guess I'll dust it off tomorrow. @shawnandmel, keep doing what you're doing. This 60 year old man enjoys your discoveries into my past.

If you can find it, watch the Unsung episode Zapp and Roger. It was so sad. I had no idea of the murder until I saw that episode. It was a murder suicide. Roger was going solo from the group Zapp and his brother didn’t like it so the brother killed him and then himself. Each of them had about 10 kids.
