Before T-Pain and Future there was Roger Troutman. This man has influenced a ton of great music over the past few decades. The undisputed master of the Talk Box.
@youaintasbadasyouthink
@youaintasbadasyouthink 3 жыл бұрын
He's an absolute legend but let me make the distinction that Future & T Pain don't use Talkboxes, it's Autotune made famous by Cher of all people haha. Computer Love is my all time fave, man I wish I could have seen Roger play live. Side note, I bought a talkbox a few months ago and honestly it's the hardest thing to make sound good in terms of hearing the words and not just the tones. Roger is truly the master.

@@youaintasbadasyouthink You're absolutely right. Thanks for the clarification about the talkbox and autotune. I had forgotten about Cher's song "Believe" too, lol. Am I correct that it's the talkbox that Teddy Riley uses? I've seen footage of him on stage with the tube in his mouth.

The sound from his synthesizer is pushed thru a plastic tube held in his mouth blending the sound with his voice and projecting it thru his mic. Computer Love by Zapp/Roger. The voice box hooked to a keyboard is how they create the sound. You sing by playing the notes and kind of going through the motion of singing but not really making any noise (the keyboard supplies that). You have to use a little bit on consonants. Peter Frampton used a voice box and guitar, most notably on his song "Do You Feel Like We Do" if you want to check out a rocker doing it, slightly before Zapp and Roger.

This was sort of a voice effects device that Roger Troutman used quite a bit with his vocals. It basically turned his voice into an instrument. If you watch performances Roger had a tube running into the corner of his mouth for these types of vocals. This was probably one of 4 of Zapp's/Roger's best hits. Check out "Computer Love", "Doo Wah Ditty", "More Bounce to the Ounce" or "I Can Make You Dance".

I'm a 34 year old white guy from England, and Zapp & Roger have been my number one artists ever since I first heard them when i was 15. It's great seeing two younger kids hear them for the first time. If you wan't to see Roger sit and play with the talkbox, here's a lil clip from an interview where he demonstrstes it kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpCmc42hmZenfac

He was performing at the front row in Cleveland. This was a concert Hall that was in a round space. The stage was round and rotated. When he got to this song he told everybody to come to the stage. It was so many people that the stage stopped...lol

This song is actually Roger as a solo artist. ZAPP is the band with his brothers. Roger introduced the voice box that morphed into autotune. Produced California Love for Tupac Shakur n Dr. DRE. R.I.P. Roger Troutman

Took a picture with him and my best friend after his concert in San Diego in 1986. He was a cool cat, loved his music, and he was incredibly down to Earth. Came out after the concert to stand, talk, sign autographs and take pictures. I paid $20 bucks for that pic with him, which was quite a lot of money in 1986. His songs were everywhere. Tupac used him on an album. Computer Love was his greatest hit, or I Heard it Through the Grapevine. I was in shock when I heard when and how he was murdered. Very untimely death. By 1995 he was considered an Ol' G. LOL That voice box had him sick a lot from bronchitis types of diseases. Not a lot of people used that machine.

One of his greatest songs is Computer love ft. Charlie Wilson and Shirley Murdock. Take a listen to that song. Charlie Wilson was apart of The Gap Band.

Such a classic R&B song! I still play this today! It’s a talk box, not auto tune. I can’t fully explain the difference but their definitely is one. I think with the talk box the sound is fed into the singer’s mouth from an attached instrument. Roger Troutman is a master of its use in songs. There is a TVOne Unsung episode about Roger Troutman that is worth watching. Check out their hit songs Computer Love and More Ounce To The Bounce.

I am so happy you all have discovered Roger Troutman and ⚡️Zapp⚡️! I hold them in really high esteem, about a step down from Prince who is like the ultimate for me. But up there with the Beatles and Queen. Zapp created some great funk music and roller skating jams but they would have these exquisitely melodic ballads and they had a distinctive sound using the talk box effect. Great songwriting. They just always bought their A game and never disappointed. Shirley Murdock’s gorgeous vocals were a perfect fit with their music. Please also react to- More bounce to the ounce Computer love I can make you dance Dance floor Doo Wah Ditty Also- As we lay (Shirley Murdoch)
