You are definitely the most easy-going, pleasant and joyful travel couple from abroad.
I'm a long-time resident of Tainan. When I heard you talking about taking the HSR from Chiayi to Tainan, I'm going "Noooooooo!" Like Chiayi, the Tainan HSR station is waaaaay outside of the city. It really only makes sense to take the HSR if you are travelling long distances. For shorter trips, the standard Taiwan Rail trains are the better option. They use the stations in the city center. Good thing you figured that out before coming to Tainan, otherwise you would have had another long taxi ride (or local train) once you got here. Regarding all the loud festivities you saw, yeah, this whole past month in Tainan, there has been a giant Taoist festival. They have these little celebrations at individual temples all the time, but this big one this past month has been all over the city, and only happens every few years (I think maybe every 12 years). I even got invited by my Taichi teacher to one of the street banquets next to one of these temples a couple weeks ago. Your timing was excellent to get a huge dose of Tainan culture this month. If those fireworks bothered you, you definitely do NOT want to check out the Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival on the outskirts of Tainan during Lantern Festival (usually in February). That is an "other-worldly" experience that is not for the faint of heart. Google it. It's insane. It's like walking into a war zone. You need to be prepared.
@2Passports1Dream29 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for this detailed and thoughtful comment! 🙏 We’re SO glad we realised the HSR situation before arriving in Tainan! It sounds like we visited Tainan at the perfect time to soak in the incredible culture! The Taoist festival celebrations were such a unique experience, and it’s amazing to hear they only happen every 12 years. As for the Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival... wow, we just Googled it, and you're right-it looks absolutely wild! 😅 Thanks for the heads-up. We’ll keep it in mind for when we’re feeling brave enough for something that intense. 😄 Tainan truly left a lasting impression on us, and it’s always great to hear from locals like you who love the city so much. Thanks again for sharing! ❤️

What's so great about Taiwan's rail systems is that there are so many options and they run very frequently. Not only is it fast but it's really affordable too. I think despite the minor mistakes you made taking the wrong trains, you were good sports and it's true that it makes it more of an adventure. That's all part of traveling.

“甲辰年三朝祈安建醮大典” This is a traditional Taoist celebration. The various stage performances you see - traditional Taiwanese opera and electronic flower cars - represent offerings of gratitude to the deities for their blessings.

You've just stumbled upon ceremonies of Taiwanese Taoist religion, some of these happens once every 20 years (some maybe every 3 years) depending on the location. Usually when this happen there will be days that the local hosts offer traditional Taiwanese non-stop feast all day for free if you are invited.

Chaotic but still cool. A reminder that we travel for the wild and wonderful, not the guarantee.
You should take Taiwan Railway (Ziqiang Class Train) to Chia Yi City (the station is located on center of the city )。 The Chia Yi station of High Speed Train isn't located on center of the city.
The mis-conception is the traslation of train terminology, the non-reserved in Taiwan Railway Co. is the local trains which will not go to different zone (at least 5 zones). Chiayi is just the end of zone so you guys can hop in for destination. Non-reserved and reserved is on the same train but car number between 1-8 and 9-12 with THSR. The most important and interesting railway tour is Taiwan Railway Co. does provide around the island tourist trains that can be off and on along the same direction around the island. Tourists can check with the ticket information for packages for these trains. The trains are nicely equiped and comfortable for tourists.

High speed rail stops are usually outside of big cities bc it was built few years ago so there’s no room in the already populated city. Only the Taipei stop is in the city bc it’s built underground and since it’s the capital, it make sense to have the stop in the city center. When paying the mochi vendor, to be more sanitary, you pay and get the change yourself, since their hands are used to make the food. This also happens at some night market vendors.

@@kaitenghou8523 It's a good guess in Taiwan: "Taro !! We like it sweet, salty, spicy. We like it any temperature!" Not a joke. It's only in the past few decades when proper dairy-based ice cream became common in Taiwan. Democracy and freer trade has only existed on the island since dissolution of military dictatorship in the early-90s. A generation ago, non-dairy ice taro was the norm, often flavored with sweet azuki beans and/or anko. And similarities with Japanese culture and food is due to being a colony for 50 years until 1945.

16:44When building high-speed rail, the government hoped to use high-speed rail stations to drive the development of the suburbs, so many high-speed rail stations were located in the suburbs. Of course, there were successes and failures (such as the Taichung and Chiayi high-speed rail stations), but the government should have carefully planned the suburban high-speed rail stations to the city. The district’s public transportation, such as the Chiayi High-Speed Rail Station, has not handled this well.

FYI, with Taiwanese high speed rail trains, you can always buy the "non-reseved" seat tickets on the spot, and it can be used anytime that day, including just before the train leaves. They don't sell out. The only risk is, it's "first come, first claimed" seating so if it's filled up you might not be able to get multiple seats together, or you might end up standing if there are no seats, but that's allowed. Three of the twelve cars on the train are always for non-reserved seats. If you're taking the train off hours then, you can usually find multiple seats together in the non-reserved cars. Or standing isn't bad, because the journey isn't that long and it's smooth. There are luggage racks overhead the full length of the cars too. Great system!

I am now 13 minutes into the video. Chiayi to Tainan, then Tainan to Kaohsiung both on High Speed Rail are HORRIBLE ideas! The HSR stations are really far out of the cities. When I visit my mom in Tainan and need to go to Kaohsiung, I always take Taiwan Railway trains. The regular train stations were built earlier so they were built closer to city centers. When they built the high speed rail, it was difficult to find good locations so they had to build them outside of the city in many cities.

Yeah, Chiayi HSR Station's location was chosen about 30 years ago by computer modeling, which "predicted" that its location would be a major area of growth. It's not. It's in the middle of nowhere. It was something of a scandal when it was first opened.
Yeah, your train out of Taichung was a "local" commuter train. Stops at all the stations. No reserved seating. If they are full (like during rush hour) you will likely be standing the whole way. If you are traveling between major cities, always take the "reserved" trains. They only stop at the major stations, have reserved seats, are faster and much more comfortable.
@2Passports1Dream29 күн бұрын
Thanks for the insight! 😊 That makes total sense now. We'll definitely stick to the reserved trains for major city travel in the future-sounds much more comfortable and efficient. Appreciate the tip! 🙏🚆
