I visited Queenstown in 1970s, and those hills were ABSOLUTELY bare of vegetation, almost over to Germantown. You are right! They burnt the copper ore (copper pyrite, I think), and the resultant SO2 and high rainfall did the rest. They are still mining in the area, but copper extraction no longer results in SO2 being released. Rehabilitation takes a long time, because no plants means high erosion means no soil means no plants.

The red-brown water colour is caused by the Melaleuca trees also known as Tea Trees. The tannin colours the water the same colour as tea. It is very clean and natural and good to swim in because tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic and anti-fungus. Aborigines have been using it for thousands of years and I keep a bottle in my cabinet all the time. If you buy some make sure you buy the 100% pure local product and not the cheap imported stuff diluted with ethanol.

The tannins in those high country creeks comes from the button grass, but it gets even darker with the contribution from melaleuca trees when it reaches lower elevations.

So sad to see the end of your Aus Odyssey but looking forward to your next adventure. Hope you’ll get back one day to do more inland Australia as there is so much to see and do, as every where. You are a delight to watch and I hope Mazda give you access to some more vehicles for travel around the world. Thanks for sharing this visit to Tassie with us all ❤

If you're ever down south again, stop by at 2 little towns called Ross and Richmond, Ross has the best bakery there and Richmond is just such a beautiful town!

The black bird staring Tia down looked like a Black Currawong. They have the yellow eyes. The "eerie" sound from the birds earlier sonded like black cockatoos. Another ripper episode guys!👍❤️ ✌️

Tasmania is awesome & Hobart is a great little city, I've never understood why people in Melbourne & Sydney run with all the Hobart, Adelaide, Perth etc. jokes these places are so easy to get around & the lifestyle, nature, beaches etc. are top shelf.

Really enjoyed seeing you guys getting to experience all the beauty of my home - I also hope one day I can be even half as happy as you two seem to be. Safe travels!

"We're here in the dead of winter and its not that cold... Tasmania doesn't get that cold." Oh my sweet summer child. Where you were standing only a year earlier was under snow. The stream is red in colour because the water picks up the tannins from the button grass and tea trees on the way into the catchments. By the time it gets to the lakes its amost black.

Feb is hot and all the produce here is ready to go. I love the colours of the bedrock around Queenstown. it's amazing to see the changes as you come around each bend.

So glad you had good weather for Cradle. I've been there 4(?) times and its always magical. One time we were hiking back from the first hut and it was pouring rain and the poor people who were on a walking tour had their guide pointing out where the mountain and lake were and you couldn't see a thing. Oh and those Currawongs are very intelligent. They have learnt how to unzip packs so you have to be careful where you leave them.

We climbed The Nut when our kids were small. Eldest daughter sat down and refused to go any farther unless we carried her, which we did. Now she's a really keen walker and would happily jog up. :D

Nice to see some of cradle mountain area, as i haven't done that part of tassie yet. The seaplane trip from strahan into the rivers area is great, but yes they can be pricey, especially during summer season. Look forward to your next adventure.

Thank goodness you escaped the cunning of those clever mountain currawongs at Cradle Mountain NP. They can open zips you know! Leave a bag lying around and they'll steal your food from inside the bag! Gonski. So glad that you enjoyed your trip so much. This country is incredible and Tasmania such a beautiful jewel in it's crown.

Gonski? I guess they are rather well educated for birds.
