If you go directly straight through the forbidden city from the south gate to the north gate, stay along the middle line, you missed about 80% - 90% of the palace. BTW, the time slot you get when you reserve the ticket for the forbidden city is the time slot that you should get in, it is not the time slot that you have to explore the palace. Once you get in, you can stay inside the palace as long as it remains open. I took my two kids to visit the forbidden palace about 2 months ago, we spent the whole day inside the palace (>6 hours). A tip for the foreign tourist who has enough time: you may start from the middle line and pick a direction, for example the left, to explore, and then come back to the middle line and then move north. When you get to the north gate, turn around and do the same thing. You will end up getting out from the south gate again. Then it is about 10 minutes' walk to the Wang Fu Jing business district, where you can find excellent restaurants, big shopping malls and a lot of local goodies.
