Breakfast varies from province to province and even from city to city in China. I live in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and my favorite breakfasts include sweet soybean milk, salty soybean milk, deep-fried doughnuts (which can be dipped in a little bit of soy sauce), xiao long bao (small dumplings), bamboo shoots with shao mai (roasted pork), noodles mixed with peanut sauce, noodles mixed with scallions and oil, skinny pork porridge with egg, millet porridge, pumpkin porridge, and many other types of sweet or salty porridge. The crust on the outside of the JianBing you guys are eating in the video is made of mixed grains and it's my favorite too. There are still some breakfasts in China that I haven't had either, so I look forward to your continued exploration.

What makes foreign friends confused most is the difference between 包子baozi and 馒头 mantou. Because they're the same word bun in English. So it's better to use Pinyin for them on this situation. Basically 皮蛋瘦肉粥 is very popular in Chinese communities overseas. I noticed that there was no pieces of century old eggs in your congee. Bakeries in China only serve western style bread that we don't eat for breakfast. It's an economic option to grab food for breakfast from streetfront eateries and street vendors! Remember the difference between 包子,饺子,馒头,和面包。小笼包其实是包子,但被翻译成Soup dumplings😂. Honestly watching your video makes me feel hungry at the moment! Enjoy your trip in hangzhou!!🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
@sunnys28642 ай бұрын
I saw many people call 包子 dumpling because it might have similar ingredients and methods to make as 饺子。
@s._3560Ай бұрын
Yes, Baozi has filling usually. Mantou refers to plain buns without fillings. Both are leavened using yeast. Jiaozi, Xiaolongbao is just wrappers that are dough made with oil unleavened. However some northern Xiaolongbao variation that you get in Beijing, Xi'an is more like leavened wrapping. Shanghai and southern ones are more unleavened wrapper, small and delicate.

It's also done with a different kind of potato, a much less starchy and much more crunchy (and watery) kind

Soaking potatoes in water is to remove excess starch, and the real reason for the crispiness of potato shreds is the addition of vinegar. When vinegar is added to the pot during the cooking process, the potatoes will become crisp.

In Chinese steamed bun= man-tou which is without fillings and made with different flours. So when you asked “what’s your favorite steamed bun?”, it translated to “what’s your favorite mantou?” The seller then pointed to corn flour mantou, probably over the wheat, buckwheat or whole wheat flour mantou, all steamed buns without fillings. Steamed bun with filings = Bao-zi. To not be confused with mantou the steamed buns, it’s better to ask for Baozi instead of steamed bun. My favorite Baozi is Cai Baozi (Tsai-green vegetables baozi). The fillings are shiitake mushrooms and green vegetables. Another favorite is hua-juan which is steamed twisted buns with green onions. Thanks for your wonderful videos.

My dude..... "Man tou" and "bao zi" are both buns but you'll get very different things when you order. "Man tou" are ALWAYS steamed buns that have no fillings. "Man tou" is one of the main carbs the Chinese have in their diet. It's either rice, noodles, flat bread (bing) or "man tou" as a main. A more gritty version of a "man tou" is a "wo wo tou" but that is a whole different story for another day. "Bao zi" literally translates as "little wraps" - "bao" here meaning wrapped. "Zi" is added to signify it being small, little, petit, etc. "Bao zi" always comes with filling. It's a "man tou" with little bits of goodies wrapped inside it. Every Chinese family will have their own take on the fillings inside the "bao zi" making them unique and worth the experience. Enjoy your time in China.
