Great work as always. Getting the tarp on just seconds before the rain shows how quickly you've both adapted to Portugal. Leaving it to the last minute and getting it done is an art very few outside of Portugal know how to master.

Nice seeing more progress on the roof. As for the extra weight of the OSB board, I see absolutely nothing to worry about. The roof could hold easily two or more times the additional weight. Thumbs Up!

Good idea keeping the tarp handy. I don't know if it is done differently there but here in the states we cap off the bottoms of the rafters for extra strength. You can start with a full sheet or a half sheet but you never want what I call a + joint. Good call with the rafter blocks. I snap a chalk line at each 4-foot mark and set the noggins across the frames so they each have full bearing on the joint but do not need to be toe-nailed into place. I hope you did not forget the H clips that go between each row of sheets. This prevents joints that are unsupported. I don't know what your final roofing material will be but if you leave a 3-inch gap on the sheeting, it will allow you to install a ridge cap that allows for upward ventilation (i.e. smoke escaping). It will keep mold from forming on the underside of the roof.
@margomoore4527
@margomoore4527 5 ай бұрын
Our townhomes had the roofs redone like this, with ridge caps that ventilate the attics. It’s passive so no electricity for fans needed.

While OSB 3 is ok for a mezzanine floor I would suggest using P5 T&G chipboard. Screw down and glue the joints, and glue to the joists to avoid flex and squeaks. Use PU glue and scrape the squeeze out when it's cured. Just my recommendation 😁

Normally insulation is 60 or 120cm large, so if your rafters are every 62,5 cm the insulation will fit and you can also Cross The second Player of the plasterboards.

Now that you close the roof on the inside with plasterboard you can put the insulation in between the rafters and reduce the conctruction on top of them. This should bring the weight of the whole construction down, so in total the extra weight for the plasterboart won´t be an issue.
@LifebyLiving
@LifebyLiving Жыл бұрын
The roof isn't going to be ventilated (warm roof) so the insulation will still need to be on top of the rafters. It's also not the weight on the rafters that's the concern, it's the additional load on the structural ridge beam
@kappa2ou3
@kappa2ou3 Жыл бұрын
@@LifebyLivingVentilated roof is not a warm roof but cold roof. Warm roof is when insulation goes on top of the roof ( outside) and the process is joist, OSB boards or plywood, vapour control layer , insulation, OSB or plywood boards , battens, roof felt and clay tiles.

To strengthen your roof you could add some horizontal beams to tie your rafters together. In fact you are planning a mezzanine floor, which will have some cross beams to support the floor and stairs. So if the level of this floor is at or above your ring beam, you may be able to use this to tie your rafters together to provide extra support.

Well done you two, amazing job!!! 18mm is fine for building roofs and way better than 12mm and with that many rafters you don't need to have concerns about weight. Another thing is that gap, there is no need for that. I have build many roof extensions in where we used 18mm multiplex boards with tongue and groove, nothing ever happened in where the boards started working. Here in the Netherlands we have 2000x600mm plasterboards among a variety of other sizes up to 3000mm. Before anything I do hope you will put a type of breathable foil over the roof. I would use Megatec foil, it's a 3-layer foil that protects from moist coming in from the outside and breathable to let damp from like cooking or showering breath out of your house. Cheers Bert
