Friends ask what is the best thing about hiking & I always say in one form or another, “it is the people, the people, the people, both on & off-trail”…

I frequently drive over the continental divide on Hwy 53 in New Mexico. Beautiful Ponderosa Pine forest. Never noticed a trail there though.

I finished a flipflop thru-hike at Cumbres Pass mid October 2015 and decided to continue south with my tramily to Ghost Ranch. The weather was iffy at altitude so we played it safe and road walked. Four weeks later Otter (who I can't remember meeting) headed solo on that route. Late fall in the Rockies is no joke. Do not take any unnecessary risks. I want to see you all safely at Crazy Cook!

It was about this time last year that I was camping near Cuba, NM, not even realizing that I was practically camping on the CDT until I started picking up hikers on the roadwalk into town. It's a beautiful area. I was there about a week waiting for the solar eclipse. And you're gonna love the hot springs just north of Silver City. Be sure you check out the cliff dwellings while you're there.

You need a GRAYL that takes out viruses, heavy metals, and microbes as well as everything Sawyers takes out of water. I tried it on a cow pond, and it got my water clear. Took the sample to Iowa State University to test it, and it came back the same as well water! Score Grayl. Little bit more carry weight, but so worth it.

I ran out of water hiking in Southern New Mexico once in a place called Dog Canyon. The trail was an exposed cliff baking us in the sun with no shade, in August. Was genuinely scared by the end and water never tasted so good then right after that.

4:07 He had a SPOT Satellite Communication Device, but according to published reports, he canceled the subscription and sent it home so he would have enough money to buy weed. That was just one of the bad decisions he made. Lesson learned, don't go hiking in the back-country in the wintertime unless you have adequate cold weather gear and good winter survival skills.

Sweetie, please see your doctor and tell him about your breathing on high altitudes. He will give you an albuterol inhaler that will open your lungs wide awake and you won’t feel that way because that’s a scary feeling. It’s a simple fix you know that you’re in a medical fieldcongratulations on hitting New Mexico
