Yea a couch that looks like theirs should cost 300 dollars to make. Yes it's large but the backrest and everything looks cheap. The one we have which is a professionally made sofa with armrests and everything was 200 dollars (it is second hand I'll admit, but in great condition). For 1400 dollars you can buy a better sofa than that. Just because it is not $10,000 like the "cloud sofa" doesn't make it a cheap hack.

Admittedly, it can be done a lot cheaper. My local Big Lots has great matresses, the frame wouldn't be too hard to DIY, I can get plain sheets to dye (because with pets and kids, white is a nonstarter) from Goodwill. The foam would have to be bought, and the wood I might be able to source cheaply. Adding that it's a sofabed, and not a tiny one, does raise the value of the final product. And if you have ever slept on a sofabed, especially an older model, you know they aren't the best.

EXCELLENT! BRAVO! Thank you so much for sharing. I've had this idea in my head for some time, but in ones head and in reality is two different beast! Now I see it in action and extremely pleased! You like the same $13000. sofa I do! I'm not posh, I want that $13k couch because I spend HOURS on my couch crocheting, watching movies and have 3 broken disc in my spine. I "need" a comfy, softish sofa. Finally I too need a place for company and self to sleep; sometimes the living room and couch is the most cozy more so around the holidays! We must be soul sisters because you did everything I would do! Extra money on the fabrics (linen sheets, etc), used memory foam toppers. The best thing about your DIY, is one can start with the bed frame and mattresses, save up and shop around for bargains on everything else. They are functional until the entire sofa is complete. Course if one wanted to make it even more like the $13k sofa, seat cushions can be made and again one can save up to buy goose down with some decent batting. FTR: I don't know how far they will ship however, "Myers Goods Home & Decor" in Charlotte, NC have a sectional close to the $13k sectional, one can order the pieces wanted. I need 4 pieces, with delivery it came to $1400. I sat on it and inspected in showroom, the fabric is extremely soft and the seat, not firm and not too soft, just right. They work with ya on price a tad. myersgoods.com/products/hobson-sloped-track-arms-sofa-off-white Ask for Pamela.

how is a 2pk of shams more expensive than a twin fitted sheet 🤔 I would've bought 1 or 2 more sheets and made the pillows. Overall came out really cool though as well as versatile which is the most important. Love that you can push together a king bed out of it. also a hot tip for the future, fabric store upholstery foam is always expensive, you can usually find walmart or amazon foam mattress toppers in whatever thickness you want for cheaper, you can buy the biggest size and then cut it. I bought a 3" queen foam mattress topper for 20$ last year on target clearance and used it to make an upholstered headboard.

I think it's great. The reason people DIY an item is usually to put their on spin on it or to customize it. I think it could be done a lot more affordable with proper planning or get really lucky! Even more so if you already own a matching pair of bed frames and mattresses. Like an old bunk bed from your kids room or off marketplace. Or if you have an old sectional with a cool MCM shape. You could just upgrade to memory foam and down feather pillows. Or down alternative. Depending what you already have or the prices you find what you need. This could be super affordable or you could make it more luxe and go more expensive. Side note if anybody is thinking of trying this, I would definitely recommend using the hypoallergenic mattress protectors with a zipper that cover the whole entire mattress. Especially if you are using a mattress with a memory foam pad on top. I would try to find one that fits very snug. To keep the matress from separating from the memory foam and to avoid bunching up. It would help keep things in place and smooth. The biggest issue I see with this version is fixing the mattress pads all the time. Still worth it though! Also if you dont want to spend that much on linens you could always buy a sectional sofa cover. The kind that are like a giant blanket. Then you could sew it to make it fit your piece.
@NicoleHerrickDIY5 жыл бұрын
Looks good! I would recommend upholstering the timber sections on the bed and also adding some eyelets to the underside of the fitted sheets so you can lace them to be nice and taught. Well done though.
@aiai-j7i5 жыл бұрын
Oh, could you explain the eyelets? What are those? I have a fitted sheet that bunches up...I would love to know how to fix that!
@maryloubrouillard90515 жыл бұрын
They can buy some straps for those instead. It's made exactly for that reason and also keeps it from slipping. It almost looks like suspenders but in a triangle shape with three clamps. That way, there is no holes made in the sheets. 😊
@NicoleHerrickDIY5 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s true, you can buy them, but they already have the straps underneath. The eyelets need a reinforcement strip so the sheets don’t rip. You can buy an eyelet gun from your local hardware or haberdashery store. You simply add an eyelet every 20cm or so, then lace it up like a shoe to keep everything super taught. If it were me I would buy upholstery linen and sew zipper covers.

Buy a few king sized pillows, cut open the ends and stuff them with added stuffing for support so you can lean back and not hit your head against the wall (I bought a box of stuffing from Walmart for 20-30 bucks). Friends have slept on it, because it is basically made like a boxspring. If you get a couch from Ikea I highly recommend it.

To bad you never looked at Living Spaces, they had an exact dupe for Restoration Hardware’s Coud. It was called the Haven. Most people never think to look at Living Spaces but they often carry dupes for Z Gallerie and Restoration. I got mine there and it’s beautiful and affordable.

You could easily add the elastic bands on the corners of the sheets to keep the fitted sheet more taunt. Great DIY, thanks for sharing !

definitely think a more permanent solution would be using a more structured fabric to create a cover

I was on here looking for outdoor furniture and came across your vid. This would be perfect. Just stain and protect with wood and use outdoor fabric or canvas cloth. New subbie💞

tbh it's pretty easy! just assemble the utaker beds with mattresses + pillows, and then for the back part, cut two lengths of the bed and one width (shorter) of plywood. then take the foam you bought and glue it down using spray adhesive and upholster with whatever fabric (make sure it's a little bigger than the wood but not big enough to cover the back) you choose by pulling tightly and stapling it to the back - can then staple/glue a piece of fabric to hide the back of the wood. then just drill/screw it with multiple screws into the bottom of the bed frame and ur done! (lots of vids for upholstering if u want more visuals on youtube!)
@firesuck93 жыл бұрын
also if you really wanted to make this more inexpensive it would have been a lot cheaper to build the bed frame itself than buy it from ikea i think

I love this couch. It is actually something this CB old lady can do. Thank you. I love it. I found 2 metal frames on Amazon and bed sheets in white and 10 pack pillows and 12 pack pillow cases. I am so excited to get all so I can make a couch. I don’t have $ to buy a real couch and as it is only me for awhile this is perfect. The sheets I can wash if I have to.

I bought a sectional couch in Costco for about $900 and you can also make a bed with it and place it in many different form and styles, it’s amazing! It’s a six piece couch and comes with an ottoman. Also, Costco policy rocks you have one whole year to return it Incase it didn’t meet your expectations lol. For those looking for a nice comfy I will suggest Costco!

You should stain the wood part on the bottom of the sofa a dark brown! It’ll compliment the wood flooring nicely.

Definitely shop around. My first sofa when I moved into my own place was $500 for sofa AND loveseat! They had a deal since it was discontinued and was buy the sofa and get a free loveseat 👍🏾 Lasted probably 7 years. I actually still have both items. One is in my basement, the other on my porch.

Thank you!! Genius! This is what I'm looking for. (I'm gonna need storage but this gives me a lot of good ideas to build upon, and I like that you did the backrest as a straight back rather than an angled / tilted backrest - that would be too hard for me to figure out how to do and I don't have a wood shop or big tools so this is perfect for a little lady like me! )

Wow that’s more than I expected it to cost! But, depending on what someone’s budget is and what they decide to splurge on or not splurge on, it could be made in whatever price range they need! Some items just might take a little more hunting to find a good deal.

Another idea if anyone wants to try this: sheet suspenders! I recommend the 3 prong ones that only go in the corners of the mattress. It keeps sheets very secure and tight so you don't have to worry about the sheets coming off/moving around and messing up the look.
